Camp Kill Yourself (CKY for short) basically made their break when drummer Jesse Margeras brother, Bam Margera, introduced them on MTV, and many songs of theirs were played on a few different MTV shows. Needless to say CKY eventually gained in popularity. More of a stoner rock band than anything else, the band makes good use of distorted guitar riffs. This is a rather short album, but a few songs do catch the ear. This band was really hyped everywhere, and it seemed that all of the magazines (save Rolling Stone) were praising this band as being one of the most original rock bands to come along in a while. Well, I had a friend burn me both I.D.R. and Volume 1 to see what all the hype was about. Volume 1 seems to have more originality in it, but I.D.R has more standout songs even though it is more repetitive. The fact that the band seems to be completely serious, and no playing around when it comes to their music is a welcome surprise. They could get a bad rack for it, being related to Viva La Bam and all.
It’s really hard to justify why Infiltrate Destroy Rebuild is a good album. The vocals from Deron Miller are somewhat unique, and are what will pique the interest for most people. Lines such as
“If it’s the last thing I do, I will be the one who escapes from hellview”, and
“I am sporadic movement, you are sporadic movement” are some of the more recognizable lyrics on the album that will have more people wanting to listen to many of the songs multiple times. However, at some point it must be realized that Deron’s voice basically stays the same for all of the songs, and never differentiates from itself, except for the closing song
Close Yet Far, a soft medley that seems like a fitting way to close the album. The writing styles of most of the songs are basically the same, using chunky guitar riffs on ninety percent of the songs causes the whole album to become bitterly boring. Some will enjoy the use of distorted riffs, but won’t really feel like listening repeatedly to the album. The bass plays along with the guitars, and can be heard, but doesn’t really do anything to justify its use. The drums have nice fills that make the songs flow smoothly within, and along each other.
This is a solid effort from Camp Kill Yourself, but it still has its flaws. Most will enjoy the album on a first listen, but after a while Infiltrate Destroy Rebuild gets incredibly boring, as well as repetitive. This is a good album, but it just seems like too many songs sound the same. The first two songs
Escape From Hellview,
Frenetic Amnesic, and
Flesh Into Gear are just about the best the album has to offer. Both are basically the same as the other, but Deron’s outstanding vocal job makes both songs memorable. There is one song on the album that is pretty much abysmal, and that song is
Shock and Terror. The lyric from is
“Predictability is wearing thin” couldn’t be truer. The song seems to endlessly drone on, and is a perfect representation of the album eventually becoming boring, and repetitive. This band has plenty of talent, and Deron can make for a fantastic vocalist, this barely misses the mark of being a good album.
The Final Word- If you like their singles, you might want to try this out. However, don’t expect to put this album on repeat.
