Release Date: 1996 | Tracklist

Weezer's second album, Pinkerton is very different to their self titled 1994 debut. While the first album was very well done, it's sucess was mainly due to many cleverly made music videos. The critics had started to fear that Weezer were one hit wonders and so did Rivers, the band's leader. Rivers decided he didn't want any clever videos for his next album, which is why he recorded Pinkerton. Pinkerton received many negative reviews and Rolling Stone's "Worst Album Of The Year" award. But the rest of us thought that Pinkerton was, and still is, Weezer's masterpiece.

Pinkerton is a concept album, loosely based on the opera "Madam Butterfly". Here is the story in full for those who are interested
http://xroads.virginia.edu/~HYPER/LONG/contents.html

The opera is about an american man who falls in love with a japanese girl while he is drafted to Japan as a soldier. He then has to move back to america, but promises he will return. When he does return, he has an american wife and has forgotten about the japanese girl. Once she sees him with his new wife, she goes and hangs herself. The american man finds her and this is when the opera ends.

It is honestly very hard to pick highlights of this album, as it is a masterpiece.

Tired of Sex- This track starts out with some feedback, a technique which the band seem to like. As with the other tracks up until Across The Sea, this song sets an unhappy mood. Great album opener. 4/5

Getchoo- All of the first four tracks are extremely catchy, despite their unhappy mood. Getchoo is probably the most catchy, and the most unhappy. 5/5

No Other One- There is really nothing else to say about this song that hasn't been previously said. 4/5

Why Bother- Probably the happiest track of the first four, Why Bother is when the mood starts to pick up, quite a catchy track. 4/5

Across The Sea- In this track, the mood is no longer a sad one. This is the track when the american man has left Japan for his home country. An excellent song. 5/5

The Good Life- One of the Pinkerton singles, this is possibly the most catchy song of the album. The mood is happy and the lyrics are quite positive. 5/5

El Scorcho- Another Pinkerton single, El Scorcho is regarded by many as one of Weezer's finest moments. El Scorcho is a great track with a catchy guitar riff. 5/5

Pink Triangle- Another of Pinkerton's finest moments. A very recognisable melody and it reveals a slightly twisted sense of humour from Rivers in the lyrics. 5/5

Falling For You- A sadder Pinkerton track with a bit of a depressing melody with a lot of feedback in the song. 4/5

Butterfly- The final Pinkerton track, where the Japanese girl has commited suicide. The whole track is acoustic, and leaves the album on a slightly depressing note, but it is telling a story. 5/5

You may see my review as slightly incomplete and that is because the material really needs to be heard. The music is simple but VERY effective. Pinkerton is a must have, if you like catchy music. I have heard metalheads describe this album as one of their favourite 90's albums, so it's worth a shot for everyone. One of those albums that gets better everytime you hear it.

5/5

Good review. I like this album, like you said it can be a bit depressing, but it is still amazing. I didn't know that RS named it worst CD of the year... oh well, more proof that RS isn't worth the paper it's printed on. I also had no clue it was a concept album, I never picked that up.

My favourite songs are probably Pink Triangle or Why Bother. And I don't much like "Tired of Sex".

Haha the day I listen to Rolling Stone is the day when the USA and UK go to war against each other. This is a great album. Something that really has to be listened to to grasp the full appreciation of it and I would give it a 4.5/5

Wicked album. I don't think the 'Blue Album' was successful because of it's videos though. It was an amazing album as well.

in my opinion this one of the best ablums of the past 10 years. IT has incredibly catchy music and deeply peronal lyrics underneath the concept.
And also, i believe almost anyone can relate to el scorcho, a song about either not knowing how to or not having the guts to tell somone you have feelings for them.

i have the Green Album, and i wasn't impressed with it. i only really like Hash Pipe, and to be honest, i haven't listened to it for years, nor have i listened to it properly.

i will get this i think, and the self titled. i feel like giving them a chance, after all, i do like Buddy Holly and The Good Life so i might be surprised, and from everyones review on here, it sounds like an album to own.

Green sucks, but it had a few good songs. Blue is awesome and Pinkerton is their masterpiece. I hope their new album is good.

Not necessarily... In my opinion, a bunch of the demos from the past few years are some of their best material. The last two albums were still good, but of course nothing compared to the first two.

Pinkerton is one of my favorite albums. I think it's such a surprising album when compared to the Blue Album. Instead of memorable, upbeat pop songs, the album manages to mix dark, distorted riffs with humorous lyrics that you wouldn't expect to hear, while also maintaining that accessible sound. Some of the major highlights to me: Tired of Sex, Across the Sea, El Scorcho, Pink Triangle. IMO, this album really is a masterpiece and in terms of mainstream pop/rock, one of the best albums of recent. I think this album deserves a 5. It's definitely influential and managed to get across to so many people and becoming rather mainstream, although it still kept a huge level of respect.

^^^

IMO, the most genius thing about this album was that they were able to make extremely depressing songs, my friend once called Pinkerton "The Ultimate Girls Suck Album". They made depressing songs and a lot of the lyrics were serious, but they still were able to make them into some of the most catchy songs you are ever likely to her. Genius.

This album is genius. Sorry for not posting in this months ago. I LOVE love love love love Weezer and good lord... This is just amazing. I hope they do a Deluxe Edition of this with "You Gave Your Love to Me Softly" or "I Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams". Good job reviewing this. It is a classic and one of the best albums of the 90s. It flows very nicely and it ends on a strikingly high note with "Butterfly".

kickass album and a good review at that.
just wondering if you guys knew aboutthat wierd map in the packaging. If you take off the part of the case that actually holds the CD, there is some cool map under it.
At any rate, good review.

I just got into the Weez about two months ago... I like the heavy riffage and soloing on Maladroit a lot, but Pinkerton in unquestionably Weezer's masterpiece, songwriting-wise. "Pink Triangle" has one of the catchiest melodies I've ever heard, "Tired Of Sex" has a killer wank-out solo, "Getchoo" simply rocks, "Falling For You" gives me chills... the whole thing is great. The album bleeds so much emotion and character you can't help but nod your head to it. It's like the In Utero for Weezer - an honest-to-God-warts-and-all rock record that exposed Cuomo's fucked-up mess of a mind for the whole world to see.
