08.16.15 What the Heck is Metalcore supposed to

What the Heck is Metalcore supposed to sound like?

I've heard the term "Metalcore" very often to describe, pretty much any extreme metal music that doesn't sit very firmly on an already established metal genre from the 90's or earlier. And quite frankly, I'm confused. So what IS Metalcore supposed to be anyway?
1Capture the Crown
Til Death

Rhythmic and unchanging drum usage, the same chords on a both guitars from beginning to end, evoking the dreaded word "chug". Lyrics we've heard before, a lot. And a very Very liberal use of samples, synth (with no keyboard player), and plenty of vocal editing. Described by some as "'Metalcore', the band."
Capture the Crown is, without a shadow of a doubt or hesitation, considered Metalcore.
2Botch
We Are the Romans

Something with a little more roots in Hardcore, reminding one of the guitar melody style of Converge with the simplistic brutality of Punk. Perhaps something more of a precursor or a grandfather to the Metalcore that is made by bands like Capture the Crown. However, it is still considered Metalcore.
3Converge
Jane Doe

Converge's Jane Doe is an excellently written record that captured the attention of thousands of fans, both new and old. It borrows influence and techniques from many different genres and sounds to make something wholly unique. But should Converge be considered ...Metalcore?
4Between the Buried and Me
Alaska

Extremely technical metal that absolutely never misses beat, pulling ideas and genres from every which way, and still somehow keeping it from being disorganized and messy. A very stark difference from the rest of the bands on this list, but still somehow tagged as Metalcore.
