05.05.15 | "It's really boring."
Horror has been completely distorted in recent years. Nowadays, unless there's tons of gore, teenage girls screaming and loud shrieks a flick is considered boring. The Shining is a great film and a true horror flick isn't about the cheap scares but having the viewer leave the theater perplexed and disturbed. The Shining constantly makes the viewer feel uneasy and the suspense builds throughout the film. |
RadicalEd
05.05.15 | Mononoke, LotR, Unforgiven, Shawshank Redemption, Million Dollar Baby, 12 Angry Men, Walk the Line, Inception, Blood Diamond.

05.05.15 | 'Shining is the most overrated horror movie of all time. Other than its atmosphere and occasional imagery, it's really boring.'
And this is why we have such a sorry ass Horror genre these days. I don't even think I can name 10 decent atmospheric horror films to come out in the last 10 years, let alone any that are decent. It's all weak, shite "found footage" and supernatural garbage that badly executes jump scares. |

05.07.15 | i mean if you're basing your assessment off of big budget horror movies put out in theaters then sure ur gonna think the genres gone to shit but theres probably a good 15 or 20 horror movies from the 2010s alone that are just as good as stuff from the 70s/80s/90s
just in the last year it follows, the babadook, a girl walks home alone at night, housebound, and starry eyes came out which are all just as quality as older horror movies |

05.08.15 | yeah im going to the conclusion that u dont know much about horror movies really and i was right |
DrGonzo1937
05.08.15 | I don't need to prove myself to you, but I can tell you that if you think the Horror genere hasn't become a completely dull genre with no creativity or original ideas then I really don't think you've seen many Horror films yourself. |
Kman418
05.08.15 | actually ive seen way too many horror movies its genuinely kind of embarrassing how many horror movies i have seen like it is probably well into the triple digits but the fun thing about that is when ppl have just seen like paranormal activity and the purge or whatever and they're like "wow...... i CANNOT BELIEVE how all MODERN HORROR SUCKS....... LETS GO SUCK WES CRAVENS DICK FOR AN HOUR" its really easy to tell and i get to call them dummies and such
but either way watch: house of the devil, resolution, berberian sound studio (as stated), starry eyes, let the right one in (not obscvre at all but whatever), antichrist, eden lake, a horrible way to die, you're next, and rec and after all that if u genuinely still think theres been any major dip in quality in the genre over the last 15 years then idk you're just being silly dont know what to tell u |

05.08.15 | The horror genre is probably actually my favourite style of movie, Kman418. Don't take me as someone who spits out bullshit without backing it up, I've seen a lot of horror films myself, and the last 15 years has seen a terrible dip in quality. All horror films these days are paranormal, found footage, remakes or low budget horror films that use the "B-movie" tagline to hide behind truly shitty film making. Very hard finding a film with the same quality of suspense and tension building as something like "The Shining". I think the closest thing I've seen recently that built up a decent atmosphere was Babadook. If you like terrible generic American jump scare films that fall through in the last third of the film then good for you. I don't.
|
DrGonzo1937
05.08.15 | @Kman418 I've also seen Let the Right One In, House of the Devil and they are great films, yeah. You're Next, and REC were okay. never saw Eden Lake, but Antichrist was pretentious dogshit. |
DrGonzo1937
05.08.15 | Nymphomaniac is the same kind of wank as Antichrist. I dunno, I just don't like Lars von Trier's style. |
DrGonzo1937
05.08.15 | And I agree Tresm Babadook is no masterpiece, but the sorry state the horror genre is in it was a blessing to watch. |
Kman418
05.08.15 | "All horror films these days are paranormal, found footage, remakes or low budget horror films that use the "B-movie" tagline to hide behind truly shitty film making" u literally just proved my point bud
yeah obviously a lot of stuff that comes out now is awful but there are still consistently pretty amazing ones that come out frequently if u do like any digging into the genre at all. and im not sure why the 70s and 80s get a pass with most people either honestly like do you not realize by and large most of the horror movies released in those eras were just as shitty and forgettable. obviously a lot of classics come out of that same time period but like the large majority of stuff that came out was stuff like funhouse or my bloody valentine (and while those are fun movies there's really nothing special or very memorable about them). like the shining came out in the 80s and that was revolutionary but you're seriously using that and probably like 2 other really well known classics from the genre and using that to judge the whole period
the only reason you/most other people think that the genres bad now is cos you can look back on the shining and the texas chainsaw massacre and halloween and not pay attention to any of the shitty and forgettable ones because they were shitty and people forgot about them. and that's the same exact way horror movies from the 2010s will be, no one will remember teenage found footage movies #375837 in 10 years but they will however remember stuff like house of the devil and the babadook and then we'll get a whole new generation of people complaining about this shit |
DrGonzo1937
05.09.15 | That's my point, these bad films these days try and capitalise on the fun yet terrible 70's films. The thing is, they were bad, but they still have a charming quality or something that still makes it watchable. Anything these days that uses the "it's going for the b-movie thing" is literally using that to try and get away with it being so fucking bad.
And you seem to be forgetting that found footage films are still as strong now as they were 5 year ago, probably more so these days. I'm not saying there isn't some stuff out there that is okay, because there is, but you have to swim in shit to find it. And Hollywood has almost entirely lost its ability to create suspenseful, atmospheric films.
Maybe it is me getting old, but to me it just seems horror films made more of an effort to what they do now. And for every good film that comes out there are 200 terrible ones swarming.
