05.23.16 | Thought the pilot was great. I love the look of the show. That airplane fight scene was incredible. And Cassidy pouring that dude's blood into a bottle before jumping out was badass. Love Tulip too. Overall I'm on board. |
dbizzles
05.23.16 | I'm glad you enjoyed it. I liked a few things- that Cassidy moment particularly. I love Cass, so I hope they at least do him justice.
Think those Woody Harrelson wannabes at the end are the angels or maybe working for them? |
JeetJeet
05.23.16 | I have no clue. I haven't read the comics so I'm pretty much going in blind with this show. My guess is that they're messengers/henchmen for whatever evil might come around. |
Wolfhorde
05.23.16 | except that GoT is not running out of ideas and chock filled with the most common tropes
unlike walking dead. plus horrible characters. plus... who the fuck cares about the most boring antagonist of all time? |
DinosaurJones
05.23.16 | I think they're probably the angels.
I went in with an open mind. At this point, no matter what it is, if it's an adaptation of something, it's never going to be as true to the source as you want. I enjoyed it for what it was, and I love the comic. I'll definitely keep watching before I form a stronger opinion.
And if you REALLY want to know what it feels like to have an adaptation murder the source material, try to figure out what the fuck is going on with Stephen King's the Dark Tower. |
Wolfhorde
05.23.16 | " fuck is going on with Stephen King's the Dark Tower."
waaaaait. is there a TV show being made based on it? |
DinosaurJones
05.23.16 | No, a movie. They, uh... they cast Idris Elba as Roland. He's a phenomenal actor, but seeing as race plays a gigantic part in the story, I find it odd that they cast a black guy as the main character.
Also, they've cast parts for characters that are throwaways in the books, or characters that no one has never heard of. Meanwhile, there's no information about Eddie or Susannah. So... I have no idea what to expect, but hopes are NOT high. |
Wolfhorde
05.23.16 | Idk too much about the characters but one of my best friends is a huge Steven King fan and he always talks about the Dark Tower and he's read passages to us and Idk whether the setting even translates well to a movie, it sounded like quite a clusterfuck. |
dimsim3478
05.23.16 | luv the preacher comic but it's clear that not all of that shit is going to work on TV. i sorta accepted that the show would be very different from the comic pretty much straight away when the adaptation was announced.
haven't seen the pilot yet, but haven't been at all compelled by what i've heard about it, like hugo root being on the "main cast" (i liked that they killed him off after one arc in the comic), quincannon being included so early in the story, and the inclusion of emily woodrow whoever she is supposed to be. all that said, i retain the hope that all those characters are going to serve their purpose in whatever this show is going to turn out to be, which is clearly not a shot-by-shot of the comic. |
dbizzles
05.24.16 | Wolfehorde, TWD fucking nosedived for me. The first couple of seasons were good and they used to be more adventurous with the directing and production. Now it's, like you said, a bunch of terrible characters nobody cares about being recycled and doing the same things over and over. That show needs to wrap it up.
Dinosaur, after sleeping on it, I don't think it was all that bad. I just was pretty damn disappointed. I should have kept my expectations even lower than they already were. I wish HBO had kept the rights, but even then, who knows what they would've turned this into.
Dimsim, they are fucking the timeline up hard. Seems like they are trying to just use the characters and general idea for the story and trying to make it into something else completely. What the fuck is up with the casting for Hugo and Tulip anyway??? Tulip is a problem for obvious reasons and Hugo is just a tall, fat potato cop???? |
JeetJeet
05.24.16 | What's wrong with the casting for Tulip? Fill me in cause I don't know shit about the comics. |
dbizzles
05.24.16 | Tulip pretty much became iconic throughout the comic series as a blonde, badass bombshell- her character is immediately recognizable.
I don't want to sound like a dick just because she was cast as a black woman, because even if she were a white brunette it would feel wrong.
Comics arent like books where you make up an image of the characters and scenes for yourself when you read them; the characters are portrayed visually for you already. I understand it is impossible to duplicate every visual portrayal on-screen and I obviously don't know if they just couldn't find a good blonde actress to fill the role, but that chick is not even close to recognizable as Tulip O'Hare to me.
As far as the Sheriff goes, in the comic he was more akin to the drill sargeant in Full Metal Jacket in the comic than the Private Pyle I saw in the pilot. |
jtswope
05.24.16 | Pilot was okay/intriguing, but a bit disappointing agreed. I haven't read the comics, but the characters in the pilot were poorly developed. I didn't really get a sense for who Jesse was. Tulip was the most interesting character to me.
Just watched the pilot for Outcast though. Fantastic. Much darker and more compelling than Preacher. |
Faraudo
05.24.16 | Nah, it's a pretty solid pilot. I don't give a flying fuck if it's not like the comic (and i've read the comics), they are 2 separate universes. |
dbizzles
05.24.16 | I didn't get a sense for who Jesse was in the pilot either, but I will admit, his casting seems like a decent fit- Cassidy's, too.
What's this Outcast you speak of? |
jtswope
05.24.16 | I definitely liked Preacher, but as a standalone pilot it wasn't fully satisfying. Will see how the series goes before I judge the show as a whole. |
CaliggyJack
05.24.16 | Fan of the comic and hearing this makes me sad. |
dbizzles
05.24.16 | I'm not saying the show has to be like the comic to be good, but what made the comic good seems nowhere to be found over the first glimpse of the show. |
jtswope
05.24.16 | Outcast is a new show on Cinemax, but HBO had an advance screening of it. You can watch it on Youtube too I think. It's about this dude who's been followed by a demon his whole life and who helps with an exorcism when it possesses a young boy. There's more to it, but that's the gist. It was really well-done. |
dbizzles
05.24.16 | Watch it, Jack. All opinions welcome- the more the merrier, really. Maybe you'll think it kicks ass and I'm just being too critical. I'm not tossing that out as a possibility. |
dbizzles
05.24.16 | Sounds interesting, jt. I haven't seen anything on Cinemax since I was, like, 14 if you know what I'm saying. |
jtswope
05.24.16 | Haha oh yeah. I've seen Banshee, but otherwise same since I don't have Cinemax. I only heard of Outcast 'cause my roommate and I found that they were showing the pilot on HBO. Definitely worth a watch if you come across it. |
jtswope
05.24.16 | Here it is on Youtube also:

05.24.16 | I've been hearing a lot about Outcast, though I haven't read the source material. I'll probably check it out though, thanks for the link! |
dbizzles
05.24.16 | Yeah, I will try to find some time to check it out. Thanks, holmes. |
dbizzles
06.07.16 | Setting aside all expectations and desires, episode 2 was pretty okay. The Saint of Killers at least got me excited and whatever the hell that scene was in the church with Cassidy and those two goons (cowboy angels that can reincarnate??) was pretty cool as well even if I have no idea why that happened. Tulip still sucks.
Anyone else catch it and have some input? |
DinosaurJones
06.07.16 | I totally forgot to watch. The 2 week break really messed with me, since I rarely watch TV. Are they showing it for free on AMC.com? |
dbizzles
06.07.16 | I'm not sure. I had to record it and watch it. |
Cygnatti
06.07.16 | is the main character at least kinda hot? important question. |
Cygnatti
06.07.16 | "Jesse Custer is a small-town reverend who becomes fused with a powerful entity named Genesis, giving him the ability to cause people to obey whatever he commands. Using this power, he begins a journey of discovery and revenge across America, with the aim of forcing God to answer to His creation for His sins. Standing in Custer's way is a secret religious military organization mysteriously known as The Grail, as well as Custer's own twisted family."
sounds lit tbh. |
DoctorDoom
06.07.16 | It's my favorite comic of all time an the show has bummed me out thus far.
Meanwhile GoT books/show is the GOAT |
DinosaurJones
06.07.16 | Balls. I'll have to see where I can find it. |
dbizzles
06.07.16 | Cygnatti, if you think Dominic Cooper is hot, then yeah. The comic is so bad ass. |
DinosaurJones
06.07.16 | Just watched the second episode. More griping than the first for sure. It's definitely got my interest. |
PumpBoffBag
06.07.16 | I'll prolly give it a little more time before I stop watching, but the comic book is perfect fare for a really dark TV show. If the first episodes are anything to go by, the tone/ atmosphere feels completely wrong- which is possibly the best aspect of the comics for me. |
dbizzles
06.07.16 | Yeah, it's off. I agree episode 2 was better, but there are so many questions I have about the direction of the show. Plus, if the opening was any real indication, they may do the Saint of Killer, or at least his story, justice. |
Faraudo
06.08.16 | Second episode was great, and that church scene was gory as hell. |
dbizzles
06.30.16 | So..... Ratwater was pretty cool. |
JeetJeet
07.01.16 | I'm loving the shit outta this show. Almost all of the characters are intriguing in their own way. Hell even Donnie the guy that got his ass kicked in the bar brawl is hilarious. Still haven't checked the comics but I'm gonna wait cause I kinda like not knowing where this'll go. |
dbizzles
07.01.16 | Yeah, no need to check them right away if you are liking this. I heard this was renewed for a 2nd season already which was surprising to me. I'm still watching the show, but I'm not too impressed. Glad people seem to enjoy it. |
DinosaurJones
07.01.16 | I haven't seen the last episode. I usually watch it on Fridays, haha, so I'll check it out later.
I'm enjoying it. I'm separating it from the comics pretty well, at least. |
BandNewbac
07.01.16 | yeah it sucks |
dbizzles
07.01.16 | Haha there are some things about it that I reeeeally don't like. At least Cassidy was cast perfectly. |
DinosaurJones
07.01.16 | Yeah, Cass is definitely the highlight. I'm alright with the casting of Jesse as well.
And I WANT to like Tulip, the actress is playing her well, it's just that the character on the show is nothing like the character in the comic. |
dbizzles
07.01.16 | Yeah, it's awful. I don't like what they are doing with their back-story or her interactions with Cass. |
dbizzles
08.06.16 | Series has been 4/10. Pretty much shit. Season 2 is supposed to pick up where Book 1 starts. Not sure if I even give a fuck at this point. Quincannon's crew is so cheesy, it's almost unbelievable. |
Faraudo
08.06.16 | Absolutely love this show. |
LotusFlower
08.06.16 | people need to stop expecting TV comic adaptations to be good. |
dbizzles
08.06.16 | Adaptation or not, this show sucks hard. |
JeetJeet
08.06.16 | This was pretty great for me. The mix of violence and humor kinda reminds me of Fargo in a way. Can't wait for the next season. |
dbizzles
09.04.16 | Anyone finish the season? Was the finale at least good? |
JeetJeet
09.04.16 | You would have hated the finale. It pretty much confirmed that the entirety of s1 is a prequel, and season 2 will probably be more like the comics. I thought the finale was weird in an entertaining way, but that's pretty much how I feel about the show in general. Weird, yet highly entertaining. |
dbizzles
09.04.16 | Hmm. I did read that season 2 is supposed to pick up where the comic starts, but they've done some damage to the characters already if that's the route they're heading. Should be weird. I think I have a couple episodes left on my dvr. |
dbizzles
10.10.16 | I finally watched the last two episodes. The finale was unforgivable. 0/10. Pure shit. Shit series. |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.10.16 | Really man? I thought the finale was like the only episode that even slightly resembled the comics.
Season 2 is now on the main storyline, though so that should HOPEFULLY be better, but yeah its on AMC and regardless of what they say, it definitely does hold them back. |
DrGonzo1937
10.10.16 | Loved the comics back in the day, loved the show. Figures. |
dbizzles
10.10.16 | The finale did most resemble the comics, but at what cost?
That God projection, the ill-timing of Quincannon??? They wrapped it up well, but they were wrapping up a pile of shit. Even if they start S2 fresh they probably won't do it well. They have the money, so I hope they can pull it together, but comic aside, this series has been pathetic. |
dbizzles
10.10.16 | At least they are trying to do justice to the Saint of Killers. |
DinosaurJones
10.10.16 | I stopped watching like 5 or 6 eps in. I plan on re-watching the entire thing though. I enjoyed what I saw, I'm just notoriously bad at keeping up with TV shows, because I rarely watch TV. |
dbizzles
10.10.16 | The last two episodes have been on my DVR since July so I figured I'd get it over with. |
