Jac's Top 50 m/ ov2018
Enjoy |
50 | | Wombripper From The Depths Of Flesh
Fairly one-note but savage DM with Swedeath tone |
49 | | Hooded Menace Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed
Same old from Hooded Menace but slightly more interesting |
48 | | Deiquisitor Downfall of the Apostates
DM with some early Immolation vibes |
47 | | Vastum/Spectral Voice Split
No frills, evil, doomy death |
46 | | Atavisma The Chthonic Rituals
Oppressive DM that's a little overlong but contains great highlights |
45 | | Grave Upheaval (untitled)
They actually wrote songs this time |
44 | | Ghastly (FIN) Death Velour
Gloomy leads for days |
43 | | Burial Invocation Abiogenesis
Song-writing is a bit reaching but these riffz are undeniable |
42 | | Yhdarl Loss
Tortured vox and dope production for this kinda BM |
41 | | Archgoat The Luciferian Crown
Bare bones but gets the noggin noddin' |
40 | | Desolation Realm Desolation Realm
[2] |
39 | | Akitsa Credo
Surprisingly tame for Akitsa but it's still Akitsa |
38 | | Anachronism Orogeny
Dissonant tech-y DM that'll probably grow on time, I've just neglected it |
37 | | Outre Hollow Earth
Nods to Deathspell Omega are always appreciated |
36 | | Chthe'ilist Passage Into the Xexanotth
Probably throwaway tracks but I can't say no to more Chthe'ilist |
35 | | Serocs The Phobos / Deimos Suite
Riff-laden tech death with organic (enough) production |
34 | | Baring Teeth Transitive Savagery
Not as good as their first two though I like the more free-flowing style |
33 | | Svartidaudi Revelations Of The Red Sword
Doesn't evoke in me what their prior stuff did, though it does basically everything right composition-wise |
32 | | Bog Wraith Omen
shave |
31 | | Revenge (CAN) Deceiver.Diseased.Miasmic
Sounds just like everything else they've made and that's all I ask for |
30 | | Necropole Solarité
Simultaneously melodic and hateful BM from some dubious characters |
29 | | Phrenelith Ornamented Dead Eyes
No bullshit OSDM with perfect production (again) |
28 | | Reduced Majesty From Within
Indonesian brutal death with super-scooped mids |
27 | | Convulsing Grievous
Stylistic mishmash of other disso-death but executed well enough that it doesn't bother me |
26 | | Tomb Mold Cerulean Salvation
Material here is just as strong as the full-length, I just with there was more of it |
25 | | Scorched (USA-DE) Ecliptic Butchery
For those who like riffs and filth |
24 | | Replicant Negative Life
As dearest Ramon put it, "cohesion was an afterthought" but some very inventive dissonant riffage here |
23 | | Inferi (USA) Revenant
The Artisan Era continue to surprise with super-polished tech that I shouldn't like but do |
22 | | Chaos Echoes Mouvement
Much more successful fusion of dark ambient and DM than what we got previously |
21 | | Slugdge Esoteric Malacology
Don't care for the cleans but some of the guitar work on this is stellar |
20 | | Mortuous Through Wilderness
Savage melding of a number of NYDM styles |
19 | | Embrace Of Thorns Scorn Aesthetics
Surprisingly diverse blackened DM from Greece |
18 | | Knelt Rote Alterity
Murky, dissonant, riff-laden and deceptively technical BM |
17 | | Exlimitir It Weighed Itself In Silver
New Demilich when |
16 | | Molested Divinity Desolated Realms Through Iniquity
Brutal DM with excellent production that balances brutality and tech perfectly |
15 | | Our Place of Worship is Silence With Inexorable Suffering
Solid as feck blackened chug |
14 | | Ulthar Cosmovore
20 Buck Spin staking their claim as the best label in metal currently |
13 | | Outer Heaven Realms Of Eternal Decay
DM that actually sounds as alien as it purports to be |
12 | | Hyperdontia Nexus of Teeth
Google this band's name as your own risk |
11 | | Tomb Mold Manor of Infinite Forms
Ulthar's label mates distill a litany of influences in a product that is as cohesive as it is gnarly |
10 | | Garroted Of Damnation and Abyssal Terrors
Morbid Angel, Spheres-era Pestilence and Demilich collide in an OSDM tour de force. Watch this space. |
9 | | Zealotry At the Nexus of All Stillborn Worlds
As technically adventurous as you'd expect but missing the atmosphere that made The Last Witness such a gem |
8 | | Chalera Theopobium Excruciation
Ridiculous solid Disgorge worship that's getting slept on hard |
7 | | Imperial Triumphant Vile Luxury
Wasn't sure how I'd feel about brass instruments in technical BM but this was a welcomed surprise |
6 | | Malthusian Across Deaths
Like a more accessible Portal with a hint of Mitochondrion |
5 | | Infernal Coil Within a World Forgotten
Takes the aesthetic of war metal and channels it into something that isn't stagnant as shit |
4 | | Horrendous Idol
Melodic, progressive and technical whilst eschewing all the pitfalls commonly associated with those terms |
3 | | Portal ION
Turns out Portal are just as mind-boggling without the miasma of noise and murk |
2 | | Abigor Höllenzwang - Chronicles Of Perdition
Album is so good that Michael Snoxall's only good review was written for it |
1 | | Obliteration Cenotaph Obscure
Guess it wasn't really a question of whether Cenotaph Obscure would be 2018's best metal album but what the margin to second place would be. As it turns out, it was actually pretty close. Cenotaph may lack the psych' of Nekropsalms and the austerity (and solos) of Black Death Horizon, but it makes up for that by being Obliteration's most and frenetic and crankable album to date. |
