How I Rate Albums

I don't approach new music with a default 2.5, 3 or 4 rating in mind like I'm sure other people do. I approach music with a default of 1. If the music does nothing to impress or entertain me it gets an awful rating. Average albums contain a few good songs and a few bad songs and this is common because performing music is challenging. A poor album I rate 2 might have one or two good songs but if it's mostly crap that's reflected in the overall rating. I sometimes rate the consistency of the album if I think the band/artist had that goal in mind, while other times the overall rating is reached through a track by track review. Like a lot of people on this site my classic 5 ratings are dispensed when I feel a personal connection to music I think is really, really excellent. How do you guys rate albums? Also, Happy New Year!
1The Human Abstract
Midheaven

This album is boring. Above when I said I begin with the default 1 this is an
example of music which does nothing for me when I would prefer to listen
to total silence than this. While you guys are of course welcome to dispute
my ratings and explanations I hope you will understand that my object is to
demonstrate my rating system and not to hate on music you like.
2Gorillaz
D-Sides

This was the inspiration for this list so I'll explain why I think this is great
music. There are two discs. On the first I like all the tracks to some degree
and generally don't skip around. The second disc is remixes of canonized
songs which while some are good, some are not. If the first disc gets an
excellent rating and the second gets an average rating I had to decide
whether to give it a good or great rating. For me, a 3 is a positive rating. If
I rate something as good, I mean it. It impressed me in some way. Great
albums are a little special, perhaps the execution is poor because as with
this example the first disc has lots of good songs but the second is more
what I would expect sometimes positive sometimes negative. Great
albums like D-Sides are entertaining and somewhat impressive.
3Propagandhi
Supporting Caste

This was probably the first punk album that I really connected with. When I
listen to any of these tracks I travel to my first year of university walking
around the city jamming a surprisingly awesome genre of music largely
unknown to me. There are moments where I feel like Propagandhi are
playing for *me* as in the music seems spontaneous like at any moment
they could transition from a clarion call to a ragtime blues and I wouldn't
see it coming, that's why I love the album. It's unexpected, passionate
and it fires on all cylinders. Even if there is a weak track or moment on an
album like Supporting Caste, A Love Supreme or Finest Hour it is absolutely
unimportant in my view.
