01.01.12 | I rate albums by rating them |
GenusHomo
01.01.12 | Haha super rambling. Because I can see people commenting tl;dr here's the short version:
Music has to be good for it to rise above a 1 rating for me, good 3 ratings are positive ratings, 5
ratings are something special. How do you guys rate albums? |
Hyperion1001
01.01.12 | "if its btbam then 5/5"

01.01.12 | Is this the same ratings system that got all your shit wiped away? I think it might be flawed. |

01.01.12 | I rate them exactly how the scale says to. |
silentstar
01.01.12 | I find it very hard to give albums low ratings, so most of my ratings are 3.5-4. |
Imperial
01.01.12 | I don't rate albums that I don't enjoy because it might not be for me ya know what i'm saying? |
ZilbelPing
01.01.12 | If it's enjoyable, it goes in the 3-4 range. If it's really good, it'll go in the 4.5. If I listen to an album for a very long time and still love it, it's a 5. I don't rate albums that aren't in my comfort zone. I only give albums a bad rating if I'm familiar with the genre and the album does nothing for me. But then again, I haven't rated most of my library and I usually look for albums I'll enjoy so I don't have many negative ratings. |
lucazade22
01.01.12 | yeah, the concept of 'average' is flawed because 2.5 would only ever truly be my average rating if I listened to albums at random. Instead, I listen to albums which I think I'll like so inevitably most ratings will be above 2.5. |
ohfoxxxycole
01.01.12 | i agree with zilbel |
thumbcrusher
01.01.12 | average at 2.5 is also flawed as the average of 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5 and 5 is 3. |
GenusHomo
01.01.12 | "Is this the same ratings system that got all your shit wiped away? I think it might be flawed."
I think that had more to do with me rating too many albums by shit artists honestly
"I rate them exactly how the scale says to."
This is what I try to do. Because ratings are all subjective I interpret awful to mean the music
doesn't do anything interesting like zibel suggested.
I reject out of hand the idea that I should not rate music I don't like. Call me severe, call me a
dick, I understand that perspective I may sound like a troll. But if I wanted to know what a site
full of people thought about some album I would prefer a plurality of different opinions
than a digital circle jerk. |

01.01.12 | I GOTTA FEELIN' |
FromDaHood
01.01.12 | Honestly, when I listen to an album a number pops into my head after 3 songs or so and that's how I rate it more often than not. That number tends not to change over time. |
Restrikted
01.01.12 | ^^^ Same for me, I tend to listen to like 4-5 tracks on the album to get a good feel for it, then I rate it |
bakkermaarten007
01.03.12 | In order for an album to get rated by me (very rarely on Sputnik) I need one excellent song by the band/ musician at least to draw me in. Then I listen to that song a few times a day for 5 days or so and maybe listen to another song of the band if it is that good. Next, I will listen through the album as a whole two times. If I like it, I buy it and listen 4-5 times a day for a few weeks, then I can give my final rating.
This system is the main reason I almost never rate a band/musician lower than 3, except for ratings on justin bieber albums/rihanna,... |
jefflebowski
01.03.12 | 1 - actively hate, despise
1.5 - has some kind of minute redeeming feature but otherwise 1
2 - the highest rating for an album i would go out of my way not to listen to
2.5 - forgettable, mediocre, 'meh'
3 - quite enjoyed listening to it, but didn't grab me and I wouldn't listen again out of choice
3.5 - for the most part very good, would consider buying
4 - enjoyable end-to-end, the lowest rating at which i usually buy albums
4.5 - extremely good, very consistent, and I can listen to again and again without tiring. the kind of album i would go out of my way just to listen to
5 - the very few albums I truly and unconditionally love, and are for all intents and purposes perfect

if other users figure out you like listening to something, you're basically ruined + should make an alt immediately. |

01.03.12 | I don't think you people that realize that there's a definition for 'average' that has nothing to do with averaging a set of numbers |
thatoneguy726
01.03.12 | 5's are taken too seriously around here. i don't like that it's defined as "classic." i think "perfect" would be more accurate. |
Trebor.
01.03.12 | no such thing as a perfect album
a 5 is a 5 |

bungy
01.03.12 | I assume I know more about music than the musicians and am therefore very critical. Then I write a negative review after which I steal instruments from the band's van. Fagz |
spillingmercury
01.03.12 | I rate by how the rating system titles each number, and will judge it as a whole album. I don't care for singles unless it's pop music, which usually has to be judged on a "potential for single distribution" basis. If it's listenable but nothing special, it goes to a 2.5 If it's good to a degree that it has character, but not one that appeals to me especially, it's a 3. If it's more than that, it juggles between a 3.5 and a 4. 4.5 is the more immediate 5 for me. I don't like rating below a 2.5, and will try to pretend I've never listened to it if I want to score it that low.
Otherwise I judge by how amusing the album title and the band name is. Sometimes the quality of the album art and how appealing the band members are also factored in. |
TheMushuPork
01.03.12 | I lift things up and put them down. |
Metamorphosis
01.03.12 | I'm pretty musically open, so I think an "average" album will sound good. I try to find only albums that are good usually unless I want to see where negative hype is coming from. I think most of my ratings are 3.5/4's because that's just how I roll. Very few 5's though. |
