Top 10 National Tracks
Totally redundant list but it beats writing this ressay. |
1 | The National Pink Rabbits
Big call, I know, but from the moment the piano chimes in all the way to the
cathartic climax (which incidentally has made me break down in public... more
than
once), this song is melancholic bliss. Berninger's tragedy is one many of us can
relate to. Chan said it the best: The National have this uncanny ability to
"take an
overdone musical topic and present it in a wholeheartedly refreshing light". |
2 | Secret Meeting
Because who doesn't need a secret meeting in the basement of their brain every
now and again. Does anyone know what Dessner is shouting in the outro? |
3 | Slow Show
YOU KNOW I DREAMED ABOUT YOUUUUUUUUUU |
4 | Terrible Love
Wait, maybe this is the ultimate anthem. Berninger concedes to being a family
man
and it sounds fucking terrifying. |
5 | Brainy
Used to be my favourite track but I overplayed the shit out of it. Devendorf's
drumming really shines through. |
6 | City Middle
Lyrics are captivating, mainly because I can't get my head around them. What's
his
deal with 'gators, anyway? |
7 | Bloodbuzz Ohio
Returning home has never sounded so dreary. |
8 | Mr. November
The ultimate anthem. No chorus is greater to scream. |
9 | Fake Empire
Spinning Boxer for the first time, I knew straight away this was an album I
couldn't
absorb on first listen. For those moments when you need to escape reality. |
10 | Graceless
"God loves everybody, don't remind me" resonates so deepy. A highlight on TWFM. |
