Also the weird voices can be a challenge but once you get used to them they also reach a whole different level of emetionality in me. I like Early Bethlehem. And overall "Shining". Then there is this legendary album by "Silencer" but they only did this one. I truly recommend "Shining - V Halmstad" to you. (oh its in swedish. I personally dont really care for the lyrics in BM. It has to sound good.)

Deathconscious 07.03.18	i hardly ever pay attention to the lyrics in black metal. i simply like the music. it doesnt really make me feel better or encourage suicide, it evokes a reaction from me and thats what i look for in art.

SCREAM! 07.03.18	Yeah I don't often pay attention to the lyrics in BM. The atmosphere is so captivating and I think it might be best without the lyrics a lot of the time as its easier to get lost in and to interpret the emotion in the music in a way that relates to your situation (which you risk losing by finding out the lyrics don't actually have anything to do with it)

dbizzles 07.03.18	I'm drawn to the atmosphere and mood of the genre. I don't really care about lyrical content and rarely seek out the actual lyrics. The style neither hurts nor improves my mood. Sometimes I just want something depressive as fuck and this the genre that delivers without me having to listen to Mount Eerie or some shit- I bet he doesn't even own bracers.

SAPoodle 07.03.18	I pretty much don't care for the lyrical content at all. What first got me into DSBM was Silencer and particularly "Sterile Nails and Thunderbowels". Terrible song title and lyrics but the atmosphere of the song was so engaging and the strange squealed vocals told me all I needed to know about the pain the song was trying to convey. It's a genre I think can be very, very silly and I think most of the bands aren't really practicing what they preach (which, don't get me wrong, is a good thing) but when I'm feeling it, I'm REALLY feeling it. And it puts me in a depressive headspace but I do feel that it's comforting. Certainly that Silencer album and others from Shining, Gris, Xasthur all got me through some really rough times. Funnily enough I often mentally place slowcore (Low, Red House Painters, Carissa's Wierd) in the same bracket in my mind that I do DSBM. It's all about the atmosphere. Sorry for the long post.
Nikkolae 07.03.18	"Maybe Massive Conspiracy, but a lot of them mix death metal and others too much" Massive Conspiracy is still a fair bit dsbm but i would agree that things changed a lot after that one, also 10th Sub level was my first BM albun so it holds a special place in my heart! but to answere your question, I just like the evilness that it portrays, idk it just gets me pumped, but seeing as how bands like that or Judas Iscariot never release their lyrics i can say it matters much

It invokes as much as it can ease "Do you think the lyrics/artists promote suicide or a way of coping with mental torment?" Most artists in my eyes make it as a way of coping. Except Silencer maybe. DSBM portrays the rawest form of sadness in musical form and the dark, eerie and depressing tunes behind those is just in a sense, comforting, having depressing music to listen to alongside your concurrent sadness eases me. Its like when i listen to Deathcore when im hyped or pissed. Music for every emotion, and mine most happens to consist of Anger and Sadness. Granted I don't necessarily have to be Sad to listen to DSBM, but its nice to have something alongside my emotions
garas 07.04.18	Interesting question, and interesting comments too. Personally, I listen DSBM for its' own unique heavy atmosphere - and that's all, this is one of my favourites: it's raw and simple. And about the lyrics: sometimes I read them, sometimes I don't - it's not that important for me. And, like SgtShock mentioned, the one-man bm band documentary on YT is pretty spot on.

" To be fair I was referring to the really good DSBM when I brought that up. Stuff like Gris - Il Etait Une Foret... for example is a perfect example of what the genre should sound like (imo) and it's an album I cannot put on at any moment because it is just too fucking dark and depressing. If we look at DSBM in general, then yeah probs a lot of it does kind of suck.
SCREAM! 07.05.18	@Dissonant Sounds like you're going into it with the wrong mindset. It definitely typically isn't meant to be fun or headbangable a lot of the time. Some exceptions come to mind (Dissection definitely brings the riffs) but generally speaking that isn't what the genre is about at all. If that's not for you that's fine but maybe approaching it in the right mood with a different mindset could help you appreciate it.

Midway through the first track it gets really up-beat drumming and a more positive melody and it's this weirdly dark-yet-affirming shit it's so good.

pbass0 07.16.18	Thanks everyone. This was a cool discussion. From my perspective its just a more abrasive form of regular black metal. I say this because 1. its obvious and 2. because I don't listen to black metal for entirely emotional connection (unless its the folk infused stuff), but to get that nasty sound it has. Since posting this I have warmed up to the genre and stopped taking the lyrics and stuff at face-value.
