04.30.23 | Honestly, I still don't know about my 2013 vs Rise ranking. Both are ranked A in my mind, but both have different faults and do other things perfectly so I'm really not sure about that one.
Entire franchise is a fucking 1000/10 though |
pizzamachine
04.30.23 | 1 is 1
5 is also 1 |
someone
04.30.23 | where does the series rank? |
Hyperion1001
04.30.23 | first one is #1 by a fairly large margin.
still gotta see the new one. most everyone whose opinion I trust are saying just wait until it hits streaming. |
budgie
04.30.23 | evil dead is officially the best franchise, ever since scream 5 and 6 came out |
DarkSideOfLucca
04.30.23 | I loved the new one but yeah I dunno, I might like 2013 more
I'll leave it here until a rewatch though, but I had a great time in the theater |
budgie
04.30.23 | "first one is #1 by a fairly large margin."
boff i prefer the evil dead to evil dead 2 by quite a bit, it's not a certain thing that ED2 is the best release. might be misreading what you are saying though |
TheSonomaDude
04.30.23 | very accurate ranking.
honestly i've tried to give 5 so many chances and i just dont care for it, despite ED2 being a 10/10 |
el_newg
04.30.23 | for me, 2>1>Army>series, haven't seen the newer ones |
Hyperion1001
04.30.23 | yeah I mean the original evil dead.
im not a huge raimi fan and don’t really care for much of his filmography outside of the original and drag me to hell. |
budgie
04.30.23 | muh bad im still working on my coffee
drag me to hell always disappoints, ive seen it idk how many times and its never as good as i want it to be |
Thalassic
04.30.23 | OG Evil Dead is 1; the overall vibe of that movie is still something unique. It's campy and cheesy, but at the same time it's also straight up nightmare fuel.
Evil Dead 2013 is 2. What still caught me off guard was - by big studio horror standards - how mean spirited and nasty it is. It has none of that classic camp charm since it's almost unrelentingly bleak, but it works for me.
Liked the new one a lot, but I still have to sit on it for some time to see where it'll land.
ED2 is a fun and creative movie, but a bit too goofy for my taste.
AOD is probably great if you're into that kinda thing, but it's not really my jam. |
Hyperion1001
04.30.23 | army of darkness feels like a movie made for people who still have boondocks saints posters in their bedroom. |
DarkSideOfLucca
04.30.23 | Yeah Army is super out of place. I mean, I still think it's awesome but it's very solidly in last place. The first time I saw it I was really let down by the lack of horror, because I think a more horror/comedy mix in that setting would have been awesome, rather than an action adventure comedy. |
Wildcardbitchesss
04.30.23 | honestly at this point I think Rise and Evil Dead 2 are pretty much neck and neck as my favorites. I thought 2013 was fine as a straight up horror movie but Rise comes back through with some of the campiness of the originals while still being mean as fuck like 2013.
Idk Alyssa Sutherland really knocked it out of the fuckin park. Best deadite imo. |
DarkSideOfLucca
04.30.23 | If there was A LITTLE more campiness in Rise, I would probably have it way more solidly as my number 3 spot. As is, there are like two, maybe three 1 second scenes in the whole movie that are campy so it just seemed a bit out of place. I honestly would have it much more solidly as number 3 if those scenes were cut as well, this way it would be more consistent in tone at least.
But it's still fucking fantastic, and Alyssa Sutherland is prob my second favorite deadite right behind Cheryl. I prefer Mia as a final girl. |
Trebor.
04.30.23 | Evil Dead 2013 the first half is really good and then the second half is not scary at all and just kinda boring. I fucking love Army of Darkness and it's probably the most rewatchable of all of them |

04.30.23 | Thoughts on Ash Vs? |

04.30.23 | Both Rise and 2013 are better than the originals tbh. Speaks volumes about the quality of this franchise, because all of them are excellent. |

04.30.23 | ash vs. is fantastic esp the episode(s) with samara weaving
evil dead 2013 has the honor of being the best horror film remake (sorry the thing fans) |
ConcubinaryCode
04.30.23 | Ash Vs might be my favorite thing out of the franchise. Still need to see the new one and maybe a refresher on the og. I never really got into AoD. |
budgie
04.30.23 | you all make me so sad, aod is what ignited my horror nerdism when i saw it in like 2003. it's precious |
DarkSideOfLucca
04.30.23 | "Thoughts on Ash Vs?"
I fucking LOOOOVVVEEE that series so goddamn much. I should have ranked this here, but honestly I don't know where it would fit, but I absolutely adore that show. It will forever kill me that we don't get a conclusion to this story, so unfortunately I don't rewatch it as much as I otherwise would because it just depresses/frustrates me that we get like 3/4ths of a story |
DrGonzo1937
04.30.23 | 5 is 1 |

04.30.23 | "you all make me so sad, aod is what ignited my horror nerdism when i saw it in like 2003. it's precious"
Hey man, like I said, this is by far my favorite franchise to ever exist in any genre. All films here are like an 8.5-9/10 minimum.
They're all my favorites. |
Thalassic
04.30.23 | I think that "Abomination" thing in the 2013 movie could've been a bit more intimidating. Felt like a missed opportunity there.
The mutilation going on in that movie is off the charts though. Truly mean stuff.
I still gotta go to bat for the OG Deadites in the first Evil Dead movie. They may look dated and trashy, but at the same time they still have that completely unnerving touch to them.
Deadites in ED2 looked dorky by comparison. |
Hyperion1001
04.30.23 | cmon now guys let’s admit that the whole raining blood thing was fucking awesome. that’s the scene that sold me fully on the remake. |
Wildcardbitchesss
04.30.23 | ya and I will say that as much as I love Evil Dead Rise, Mia is a better protagonist imo.
It’s just everyone else around her was so forgettable. Jane Levy absolutely killed it in that role. It’s a fucking shame she’s not in more stuff. |
budgie
04.30.23 | i watched some talk show with her and she said she hated horror movies so it's fair enough she hasn't become some new scream queen
office uprising is a fun comedy horror she was in though |
porcupinetheater
04.30.23 | Just saw the new one last night and wasn't super impressed tbh
*New one spoilers*
Mom deadite was rad, but the whole the big ball of dead at the end felt super anticlimactic, like pull out a chainsaw and one little shove into the word chipper and it's all bye-bye, save for the hackneyed bookends they tacked on just to up the body count. Also seemed strangely nice for an Evil Dead movie? Heard so many things about how mean spirited it was only for the little girl to get off completely unscathed save for the therapy she's gonna need, lead gets a couple flesh wounds and keeps all her limbs, and the other daughter turns after just a tiny tattoo gun to the cheek? Idk, it didn't really feel all that Evil Dead to me, like a fan film without much of the character of the rest of the series, whether that's the goofiness or the mean spirit, and definitely none of the energy of the original trilogy. 2013 didn't have that either, but it put its characters through so much Hell that it came out fine |
Futures
04.30.23 | watched them all for the first time last week. weird i've never seen them because i love raimi and horror. really fun and consistent franchise.
2, aod, 1, 2013 and rise for me but all good movies. 2 is honestly a perfect movie, love the perfect balance of horror and comedy. i also love aod's crazy slapstick looney tunes cartoon tone and it's the one movie in the franchise that doesn't follow the same beats. campbell kills the one liners and humor. shame he never became a huge star because he has such a great screen presence.
aod tone with the gore of 2 or the new ones would be goated. gotta watch the series now. |
Trebor.
04.30.23 | liking evil dead remake more than the thing is certainly an opinion |
ian b
04.30.23 | evil dead rise was.... okay. def didnt hit like the 2013 remake did. shame Fede apparently was a nightmare for the cast/crew hence why Dont Breathe 2 didnt have most of the people from the first one, and why there wasnt really much buzz after the remake. i feel like im missing something though, Rise had its moments but it does not nearly come close to the other films imho. that being said, i love a good woodchipper and projectile vomited blood scene n it definitely had those lol |
Thalassic
05.01.23 | 2013 was definitely way more mean spirited than Rise.
Rise for sure has its moments of all out splatter, but when it comes down to outright malevolence it's hard to beat 2013. |
Wildcardbitchesss
05.01.23 | I missed it in the theater but I remember reading someone say that the mom stabbed herself with the tattoo gun and then stabbed the daughter with it in the eye. That’s why she turned.
But the series has always played it fast and loose with that kind of thing so it didn’t really bother me. |
porcupinetheater
05.01.23 | Yeah, I’m not bothered by the continuity of the rules or whatever they’ve always been free wheeling
More just these movies have always felt like they met somewhere mean / insane / madcap inventive, and Rise felt like it was trying to follow 2013 in the mean spirit and then just not following through on it, while also not having any of the psychotic tone, balls to the wall uniqueness, or camp of the Raimi trilogy, and just wound up feeling like they decided they wanted to make an Evil Dead movie with only the most superficial idea of what that means so the whole thing came off to me feeling like complete negative space? |
ConcubinaryCode
05.10.23 | I just saw Rise and was kinda disappointed. It was still decent enough but imo horror is just a really hard genre to stand out in and so much of it blends into the mundanity of modern horror. Definitely some cool effects (swallowing glass) but the only really Evil Dead part of the movie was some callback shots and the necronomicon being there. If the vinyl was played but the book wasn't there does the curse still happen? The final monster design was super cool but why was their a woodchipper in the garage anyway? I hate the kid in the movie too. You shouldn't be allowed to have kids in horror films. It's not even the fact that movies won't kill them off I don't believe a kid would act the way the kid in this movie would. Last place movie for me personally.
Also the opening scene was kinda stupid and seemed kinda low budget. She used the drone to slice her face and she jumped in the water? Wtf? |
mryrtmrnfoxxxy
05.10.23 | 5 is 5. havent seen rise but im buying the 4kblu for sure. my ranking would be 2 > 2013 > 1 > aod |
Goodolboy
05.10.23 | 2013>rise |
Wildcardbitchesss
05.10.23 | 2013 is… fine.
All of the characters were completely forgettable aside from Mia.
I just watched all of them in the last week and for me it goes
Evil Dead 2
Rise
Army of Darkness
Evil Dead 2013
OG Evil Dead
I’m buying the collection that includes Ash Vs Evil Dead so I’m stoked to watch that |
Wildcardbitchesss
05.10.23 | tho having watched Rise again they should’ve just set it in New Zealand or Australia or whatever because the accents are so noticeable with the children especially.
Still good performances imo but man it’s a little rough around the edges. |
DarkSideOfLucca
05.10.23 | If you haven't seen Ash vs Evil Dead, then you have so much to be excited about.
And I hear that they're moving forward with the animated season 4 for that show. I just hope it happens before im like 90 |
Faraudo
05.11.23 | I've watched Rise a couple of times now and I honestly believe it's my favorite Evil Dead film, it nails the tone and everything for me. |
Wildcardbitchesss
05.11.23 | I’m stoked to watch the series, haven’t seen it yet.
And man faraudo, I totally agree. Evil Dead 2 and Rise are basically tied for me. Those movies are fuckin incredible. The rest are great but those two easily are head and shoulders above the rest imo. |
Faraudo
05.11.23 | Agreed, Rise and 2 are the best for me, followed closely by 2013, Army and 1. It sounds a bit weird, but all the films in the saga are pretty good, so the last place (which is 1 for me) is still excellent. |
Wildcardbitchesss
05.11.23 | Yeah probably my favorite horror movies. I’ve read that the series ends on a cliffhanger tho, why I’ve been putting it off for so long : / |
