05.20.11 My Top 10 Favorite Albums Of 2010

My Top 10 Favorite Albums Of 2010

I'm thinking the title is pretty much self explanatory.
10Villagers
Becoming a Jackal

I really love this album. I find that Conor O'Brien tends to sound a lot like Conor Oberst, which probably has a lot to do with how much I like him. But I find that this album is dark and eerie and very unique.
Favorite track(s): I Saw the Dead, Becoming a Jackal, Twenty Seven Strangers
9She & Him
Volume Two

I won't lie - the first time I listened to this album, I was disappointed. The only thing that I was excited about was the fact that M. Ward started to sing a little more. But as time went on, I found myself humming these songs at work or in a lecture at school and really enjoyed the album from beginning to end.
Favorite track(s): Brand New Shoes, Don't Look Back, In the Sun
8Beach House
Teen Dream

I will be the first one to tell you, that I am not really into electric-pop sounding music. But Beach House is something different. I don't know what it is; the sound of Victoria's unique, deep voice or the soft guitar riffs throughout the entire record, but I was hooked.
Favorite track(s): Used to Be, Better Times, Take Care
7Deerhunter
Halcyon Digest

Again, Deerhunter is not a band that I would normally listen to, but I decided to go outside of my musical shell and explore the vast musical abyss (that sounded absolutely, positively ridiculous... but you catch my drift.) I am so happy I did.
Favorite Track(s): Desire Lines, Helicopter
6Local Natives
Gorilla Manor

There is something so special about this band. They are so refreshing and when they are live they are spot on their recording, if not better.
Favorite track(s): Wide Eyes, Airplanes
5Joanna Newsom
Have One on Me

The only way I can describe this album is in one word. Epic.
Favorite track(s): '81, Autumn
4Laura Marling
I Speak Because I Can

Laura Marling is one of my favorite female voices of all time... if not, my absolute favorite. Her lyrics are stunning, and the maturity in this album is quite evident.
Favorite track(s): Blackberry Stone, Hope in the Air, Rambling Man
3Laura Veirs
July Flame

I first heard of Laura Veirs when she appeared on The Decemberists' song, "Yankee Bayonet." I was immediately hooked and had to get my hands on everything that she had created. When I found out that she was making a new album, I didn't think she could get much better than her previous albums but I was pleasantly suprised.
Favorite track(s): I Can See Your Tracks, Where Are You Driving?, Wide-eyed, Legless
2Tallest Man on Earth
The Wild Hunt

Kristian Matsson does not disappoint. When this record first came out, I was a little skeptical about how this would compare to Shallow Grave. I was pleasantly surprised when I first listened to it and had to replay the track, "Love is All" over and over again. I couldn't get over how heartfelt and passionate his lyrics were and how he gave me chills when he sang.
Favorite track(s): Love is All, The Wild Hunt, A Lion's Heart
1The National
High Violet

It's hard to find an album where you love every single song on it... but I have found that trait in High Violet. I love Beringer's lyrics and the slightly darker vibes that this album gives off in comparison to Alligator and Boxer. I don't think I've gone a day without listening to this record. In all seriousness, my favorite album of 2010. Hands down.
Favorite track(s): Afraid of Everyone, Lemonworld, Conversation 16
