| Stone Temple Pilots Ranked
In honor of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1wUBZBVsZk I want to look back on what used to be a pretty good alternative rock group. Originally dubbed as a "copy cat" band, Stone Temple Pilots probably, most fairly, winds up falling somewhere between "The Big Four" of grunge and the homogeneous, radio-ruining, knuckle dragging post-grunge schmucks that dumbed down and cheapened the sound of their predecessors with extra doses of cock and booze. I find that most STP albums have aged pretty well, and it's sad we can't say the same for Scott Weiland. I actually can't fault the band for firing him after seeing that last video, as lame and state-fair-ish Stone Temple Pilots (With Chester Bennington!) seems. Poor Scott. I'd feel worse about bringing attention to your hilariously unfortunate antics if you didn't do Velvet Revolver. | 1 | | Stone Temple Pilots Purple
In my mind, this is the obvious choice for number one. Chock full of some of their best known songs, which are in turn buttressed by some damn good album tracks. There's a lot of interesting and relatively experimental instrumentation here- things even get vaguely ethereal and psychedelic from time to time- and ultimately, Purple just feels like the band emerging into its own personality. While it never quite reaches classic status in my mind, any fan of 90s alt rock should really give this a listen. Favorite tracks: Vaseline, Silvergun Superman, Army Ants | 2 | | Stone Temple Pilots Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican...
It seems like this album never really got a fair shake- people don't seem to talk about it and I remember it being described as a commercial failure. It's a real shame, because it's a pretty well done mix of weirdness and pop accessibility. Perhaps it just wasn't heavy or rocking enough for what people were expecting at the time? Regardless, I enjoy pretty much the whole thing. Favorite Tracks: Tumble in the Rough, Trippin on a Hole..., Seven Caged Tigers | 3 | | Stone Temple Pilots No. 4
From the opening riffs of No. 4, you can tell that it's a bit of a reactionary album. Opening track Down is just beastly, huge, and built out of the essence of grunge. It probably pleased a lot of the bands more hardcore fans, but in 1999, well, those grunge sentiments were just echoes from the past. Despite some wonderful highs that are among the best in the band's catalog, No. 4, as a whole, just feels like a case of "too little, too late." The album feels caught between invoking that early 90s heaviness and the desperation to make a radio hit. Sour Girl was a nice try, and at least they didn't go Nu Metal. Solid, if inconsistent and confused, album. Favorite Tracks: Down, Pruno, No Way Out, Atlanta | 4 | | Stone Temple Pilots Core
This entry is probably pretty disagreeable, as I'd imagine it would vie for number 1 on most lists. However, I just can't get into Core. Sure, there are some classic songs on here, but whenever I listen to it, it just doesn't feel like I'm listening to Stone Temple Pilots- there is very little unique or original about the album and it really does feel like you can credit most of it's attributes to Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. It isn't hard to see why STP got that copy cat label- it doesn't feel authentic at all when you compare it to Purple or Tiny Music. Still, if you've listened to rock radio with any regularity in the past 23 years, you're certainly familiar with Core's iconic songs. Favorite Tracks: Wicked Garden, Sin, Plush | 5 | | Stone Temple Pilots Shangri-La-Dee-Da
I've probably listened to this album the least out of all those released by the original line up, pretty much to the point where I don't feel qualified for ranking it. It feels unessential, a formerly great band on its last legs. It's a pretty tepid listen, but there are a few worthwhile tracks: Coma shows some life and has some great riffs and vocals, and Transmissions from a Lonely Room and Black Again are also pretty cool. | 6 | | Stone Temple Pilots Stone Temple Pilots
Unnecessary. Even when I used to take drugs (used to take) | 7 | | Stone Temple Pilots High Rise

05.04.15 | Swap Core with No. 4 and thats pretty much my ranking. | deathschool
05.04.15 | Something about this band. Always enjoyed them, but never enough to really listen to them voluntarily. | DamnVanne
05.04.15 | negative, great captain. | Deadwing42
05.04.15 | Yeah, I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan. It seems like once every two years or so I hear a song in passing and I'm reminded that they exist, and then I give albums 1-4 a listen and think, well hey, they're pretty good. But I've never bothered to catch them live or anything like that, despite multiple opportunities, even when they had Scott. | TheSonomaDude
05.04.15 | I love Core though... | Deadwing42
05.04.15 | I guess there's something really off-putting about Scott's vocals in Core to me. That's probably my biggest beef with it. | ArsMoriendi
05.05.15 | 3 better than 4? Nah.
1 > 2 > 4 > 3
The only song I know from 5 is so bad that I refuse to ever listen to it again. | Starman72
12.05.15 | Move 2 and 3 below 4 and that's mine. | TheSonomaDude
12.05.15 | Core is easily 1 tbh | Titan
12.05.15 | Arcade's got it right....at least the top 4 anyway | PHATJ
01.19.16 | 1. Purple
2. Tiny Music
3. Shangri-La Dee Da
4. Core
5. No.4
6. Stone Temple Pilots | DoofusWainwright
01.19.16 | Swap Core with no.4 and you're dandy |
