| 5 Albums That Will Change Your Life
A brief look at some LPs that will change your life, make you think of music in a different light and inspire you to do something great. | 5 | | Radiohead OK Computer
Radiohead is known for two things. Having a large fanbase and making kick-ass music. This album is about the latter. OK Computer is a journey through modern worlds and emotions. The track "No Surprises" is, for me, one of the most heartbreaking songs ever recorded. But the great thing about this album is, it doesn't have to be. You can understand and interpret this album anyway you like. And no matter how you do, the music is still there, being both innovative and melody loving. | 4 | | My Bloody Valentine Loveless
Another cult-classic, MBV is known for creating the path for future shoegazers with their wonderful sophomore LP, Loveless. This is certainly an album that rewards repeated listens. At first it's all just droning guitars and indistinguishable vocals. But then, suddenly, it's something more. It's beautiful vs. ugly, it's good vs. evil, it's loud vs. quiet. Once you can penetrate that ugly wall of noise, you're in a beautiful place. It's one hell of a good album. | 3 | | Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here
I'm sure more hardcore Floyd fans may argue that they have better releases than their most famous albums, but WYWH is simply fantastic. The 13 and a half minute opener, Shine On Parts I-V, is one of detail. Of musical genius. And most of all, heartbreak and human longing. You'll feel the same emotions that Pink Floyd undoubtedly feels for Syd as soon as the words begin. "Remember when you were young? You shined like the sun." The melodies crafted can be taken in all at once, or you can really delve into them and absorb all the meticulous detail put into it. Not only are Shine On wonderful tracks, but the rest of the album is among the greatest music ever written. | 2 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Lift Your Skinny Fists, Like Antennas to Heaven
Fans of the genre will doubtless have heard of (and most likely listened to and subsequently loved) the post-rock giant GY!BE, and the best place to start is with their, arguably, greatest album. From the minute the horns begin at the beginning of Storm, you know you're going on a journey. But, you'll also realize that the horns are equal parts sadness and happiness; triumphant and defeated. You'll see the world ending, you'll see a post-apocalyptic world. But Godspeed leaves you hope in these desolate soundscapes. By the time the album's over, you'll be wondering what the hell just happened. And you'll be turning it on again. | 1 | | Neutral Milk Hotel In The Aeroplane Over the Sea
I bet you're all sick of hearing about this album. But everything said about it is true. The painstaking beauty and honesty of it. The simplicity of it. A man with an acoustic guitar. But also, the detail. The title song, "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" demonstrates that, with each band member clicking away on their quaint instruments, creating a world of different noises to immerse yourself in. And above all of that, it's Jeff Mangum, with his acoustic guitar and his painfully untrained voice. Just listen and decide for yourself. | |

06.12.10 | great list. Everyone here knows (and loves) these albums. | bSoupy
06.12.10 | Good list but like the Radiohead song you mentioned, no surprises. If I had to guess what would be on this list, I'd get it, except maybe replace Lift Yr Skinny Fists with King Crimson or something, and swap around Pink Floyd albums. | AnotherBrick
06.12.10 | sweet list | Nagrarok
06.12.10 | 'I'm sure more hardcore Floyd fans may argue that they have better releases than their most famous albums'
Any self-respecting Floyd fan knows WYWH is their best.
'The track "No Surprises" is, for me, one of the most heartbreaking songs ever recorded.'
YES.
Needs more In the Court of the Crimson King. Changed my view on music forever. Epitaph is among the most perfect and haunting songs ever recorded. | Lunadelica
06.12.10 | ITCOTCK is definitely life changing, but in my humble opinion, it's simply not quite as life changing as these other albums. To each his own though. I guess one of the major reasons I didn't put it up on here is because I couldn't really get into it as much as these other albums. The only really perfect track (again IMO), was Schizoid Man, which didn't quite suck you in enough to leave you really wanting the rest of the album. Oh well, I really have no idea what I'm talking about. Thanks for the comments guys. | Nagrarok
06.12.10 | Dude, you need to give Epitaph another careful listen. Or two. Or three. | Lunadelica
