06.24.10 | don't be dumb everyone knows Pooh Man is the greatest of all time |
Masochist
06.24.10 | Neither are nowhere near the best of all-time, though I could see the argument for Em being the best in the game right now. Then again, #'s 2 and 3 have convincing arguments, as well as some undergrounders like MF Doom. |
Thor
06.24.10 | i'd put him in the top 5 |
hykudos
06.24.10 | horsedick is the best MC |
Bandido
06.24.10 | Nah, Andre 3000. Best rapper and lyricist still around today |
Inveigh
06.24.10 | Mos Def, Raekwon, MF Doom and Andre 3000 are all better than Eminem, but I don't know how much they fit into "our time" necessarily. Most of those guys have been rapping on track since the early 90s. So then you'd also have to include Nas, Biggie, Common, GZA, Ghostface and others in that conversation.
Aesop Rock, El-P, Slug, P.O.S., Blackalicious and Mac Lethal would all rank above Em for me as far as predominately 2000s rappers go. |
blackholeparty10
06.24.10 | Thats what i thought. Biggie, Rae, and Mos def, IMO are much better. I just like Lupes delivery more than Eminems, He's real smooth whereas Em' tries being too hard. I guess its just the voice i like. |
Apollo
06.24.10 | shaggy is obviously the best rapper of all time guys. Hands down. |

06.24.10 | I'd go with Coolio myself |

06.24.10 | Em is a douche and all of his recent music sounds the same or is filler. |
Bandido
06.24.10 | I agree Inveigh about those guys being big in the 90s. I do believe Andre 3000 really is the best of our time and I only include him in our time because Outkast has put out albums and he's had guest verses on other songs in the 2000's. Pac, Biggie, Nas and those guys had strong material really only in the 90s. Common has fallen off a bit in the 2000's. Not alot but too much to call him the greatest.
I haven't really gotten into undergroup stuff like Aesop Rock and P.O.S enough to judge them |
Bandido
06.24.10 | underground* |
Inveigh
06.24.10 | I agree on your point about Common to a certain extent, but two of his four best albums came out this decade (Be and Like Water For Chocolate) and I would argue that his best 2000s output is better than Andre 3000's personally (although Andre never did anything as bad as UMC).
I mean, Stankonia is the last truly excellent Oukast album in my opinion, and that was released in 2000, so it's been a decade since he's done anything I was crazy about.
The 2000s really were the decade of the underground emcee whether it was mixtape heroes like Gucci Mane, Lupe Fiasco and Mac Lethal or indie rap dudes like Aesop, Murs, Atmosphere, El-P, P.O.S. etc.
I'm sure there are lots of people (maybe not on this site) who would argue that Kanye was the best of the decade. |
Bandido
06.24.10 | Good point about Like Water For Chocolate which is probably better than Stankonia. Be is very good but I thought UMC dragged down the overall quality of Common's work this decade.
There have been lots of guys who have put out better work than anything Outkast has in the 2000's but some of the verses Andre has done on remixes and such have been amazing and keep him in the discussion (I think).
Kanye has been really good but I don't think he's done anything that could be flat-out considered classic and put him on top. Come to think of it, I can't really name any one guy I think has been the best of the decade.
Only indie rapper I really know is Brother Ali. I'd say he has to be in the running |
Inveigh
06.24.10 | yea I'm not crazy about Kanye as a lyricist, but then again I'm not crazy about Eminem either (too much of a gimmick for my tastes). I was just saying that a lot of people would probably say that.
Brother Ali was incredible on Shadows on the Sun, and that's definitely one of my 10 or 15 favorite hip hop records this decade, but he fell off pretty hard after that. Undisputed Truth was pretty good, but the complex lyricism wasn't as present and the EP and album after that were pretty bad I thought. I mean, Ant's beats were at least listenable, if not great, but the Brother just seems so uninspired these days. |
Bandido
06.24.10 | Yeah, Kanye's lyrics can be beat but he has his good moments. Agree on Eminem. He's squeezed about as much as he can out of the whole goofy-white-guy-who-can-shred-other-rappers image as he can. That's how I see it anyway.
I actually first heard Undisputed Truth and loved it, and then went back and listened to Shadows and realized how amazing it was. I never really gave the EP or new album that many listens but it sounded at least decent to me. |
Inveigh
06.24.10 | I dunno, I just miss the days where Brother Ali could spit some ridiculous rhyme-scheme complexity and still get his point across. stuff like
"my style's a little belligerent isn't it? considering that i'm belittling men with little more than my pen and my pad and my sentiments" |
Bandido
06.24.10 | Haha good shit. That same sort of rhyme scheme stuff is another reason I see Andre as the best.
Return of the gangsta thanks ta'

06.24.10 | btw i know you were just giving an example of a dope Andre verse, i was just givin you shit |
illmitch
06.24.10 | big boi is better than andre 3k
eminem is overrated hes really only good if you like offensive lyrics and really complex rhyme schemes
z-ro is the greatest rapper of our time as far as im concerned |
Inveigh
06.24.10 | I haven't listened to enough Z-Ro to comment on that, but I always liked Big Boi more than Andre growing up, thought he was way cooler.
I was going with the Andre convo mainly because he's much more talked about or praised by mainstream critics and recently that's moved over to hip hop critics too (there are still some out there givin Big Boi props though, as they damn well should).
Big Boi OWNED the first three Outkast records as far as I'm concerned. |
Bandido
06.24.10 | Nah I gotcha. I just think it's sick he can spit out an amazing verse that makes sense and rips on the whole gangsta scene and it's still harder than what most guys can do.
But I think it's safe to say we both agree Eminem is not the best rapper of our time haha |
Inveigh
06.24.10 | word son |
Bandido
06.24.10 | Whoa whoa. Big Boi did not own the first three Outkast albums. I mean he is underrated and I admit that cause I'm basically an Andre fanboy and Big Boi has some great verses but after Southernplayalistic Andre just went to a new level. |
Inveigh
06.24.10 | I dunno I think Big Boi was far superior to Andre on ATLiens in the same way as Southernplayalistic; I could see how Aquemini would be up for debate though. I just enjoy Big Boi's flow more, which is strange for me because I'm usually a guy that goes for the complex flow but something about Big Boi just oozed cool to me growing up. |
Bandido
06.24.10 | Ha alright man, I can't agree on ATLiens. I personally think that's Andre's best work. I mean, Elevators, Jazzy Belle, Millenium. Those verses are all sick. But I don't wanna down-play Big Boi's stuff because he can rap a hell of a lot better than most. And like you said, he's got a smooth flow. But I can't say he's better than 3k |
illmitch
06.24.10 | inveigh check out z-ro's albums Let the Truth Be Told and The Life of Joseph W McVey, you will not be disappointed |
Inveigh
06.24.10 | haha it's funny you mention Jazzy Belle, that's one of the songs I think Big Boi kills it on. Babylon and Elevators too.
I'll check em out illmitch, I've been in dire need of new hip hop. what's he like? |
couldwinarabbit
06.24.10 | Nas and Wu-Tang clan may have better albums (may being to key word). But Ian whathisname of Aesop Rock is the best "rapper" ever. |
illmitch
06.24.10 | z-ro has a lot of different sounds. some of his shit is a really fast technical flow, while some of it is closer to R&B inspired singing/rapping. he has a lot of inspiration from Pac.
give this song a listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O68iTFPaIAk
and couldwinarabbit, i really hope you know that "aesop rock" is the name of the rapper... |

06.24.10 | lol yea Aesop Rock is his emcee name, not the group name. I think Ian Bavitz is his real name though. |

06.24.10 | oh, and yea i was just reading up on Z-Ro, actually sounds like I might dig this guy. I'll d/l those albums tonight (didn't get around to those Gucci songs yet, but rest assured I will) |
