| My Decade In Metal
Checked out my metal albums of the 2000's, limited
the list to one
per band. Yes, I'm mostly a death metal fan. | 1 | | Deicide The Stench of Redemption
Finally a great album by one of the founding fathers of death. The line-up
change brought some fresh ideas, and some astounding solos. | 2 | | Behemoth Demigod
Probably at the peak of their career, they still put out great albums, but the
ferocity of this one has never been topped. | 3 | | Cannibal Corpse The Wretched Spawn
Constant greatness defines this band, and this past decade they delivered 4
(and a half) rotting beasts of top-notch quality. | 4 | | Anata The Conductor's Departure
Technicality meets melody in a surprising fashion. Unforgettable riffs, complex
songwriting, a masterpiece. | 5 | | Slayer World Painted Blood
At last, they're back. Going back to their roots, the legendary band gave us a
hell of a
thrash album this year. Too bad so many people didn't give it a chance. | 6 | | Suffocation Suffocation
The masters of brutal death released their best since... oh well, maybe their
best, period.
Mike Smith is incredible, by the way. | 7 | | Amon Amarth Twilight of the Thunder God
I like my metal technical and brutal. But once in a while, I need some melodic,
hair-rising, blood-
pumping, anthem-shouting metal. This is it. | 8 | | Orphaned Land Mabool (The Story of the Three Sons...)
Never heard of them before this. Incredibly well written concept album, melodic
leads, moody
sections, orient meets death metal meets power metal, this is more than the sum
of its parts. | 9 | | Mayhem Chimera
Powerful, cold and actually "listenable" album by the legends of black
metal. A brief pause in the
experimentation / ambience band they seem to have become. | 10 | | Exodus Tempo Of the Damned
What a comeback by a second-tier thrash band. With 2 more strong efforts after
this one, it looks
like Exodus are now on top of the thrash food chain. | 11 | | Bolt Thrower Those Once Loyal
Simple yet effective death metal. It sounds like war. | 12 | | Immolation Close to a World Below
Inimitable riffing by one of the best guitar players there is, and a doomy,
scary voice and
focused, accusing lyrics, this is Immolation in a nutshell. | 13 | | Immortal Sons of Northern Darkness
Their last effort before a successful re, this is filled with crazy fast and
"catchy" (if this
can apply to black metal) riffs and the trademark voice of Abbath. | 14 | | Kataklysm Shadows and Dust
Northern hyperblasters at their best, no fillers, just great headbanging, hook-
driven death
metal. | 15 | | Satyricon Volcano
From the thrashy Fuel for Hatred to the epic and dark closer Black Lava, this
turned out to be the
last great record from this band. | 16 | | Metallica Death Magnetic
Gone are the simplistic radio-ready hard rock songs of the 90's, and gone are
the nu- or
whatever influences of St-Anger. Metallica's back. | 17 | | Bloodbath The Fathomless Mastery
I don't care much for this being a "supergroup", I don't care much for their
"main" bands, this is
the real stuff, this is what I'd expect from Morbid Angel, but it came out from
Sweden instead. | 18 | | Les Ekorches IV Demons
Probably no one on Sputnik knows about this band from Quebec. French songs,
accoustic instruments,
yet metal as hell. | 19 | | Neuraxis The Thin Line Between
Saw this band live last year, got the album just months ago, could've been even
higher given more playing
time. Great technical death metal band, somehow reminiscent of Anata, although
less melodic and intricate. | 20 | | Enforsaken The Forever Endeavor
An excellent melodic death metal album, with guest appearance by legendary lead
guitarist James
Murphy. | 21 | | Dismember Dismember
Ah, that swedish old-school guitar sound... Of the big three of the golden years
(Unleashed and Entombed being the other 2), they're my personal favorites
nowadays. | 22 | | Xasthur To Violate the Oblivious
This is lo-fi, suicidal, atmospheric black metal by a one-man band that sounds
like it
was recorded in his basement with no budget (and it probably was). Yet it sounds
perfect for the genre. | 23 | | Cradle Of Filth Damnation and a Day
I guess this is their last album before selling-out. Not as good as their 90's
Dusk...,
Cruelty... and V Empire..., but this is a surprisingly complex and rich concept
album. | 24 | | Motorhead Kiss Of Death
30 years and counting, and back with a highly respectable metal/hard rock album
graced with
Lemmy's unique voice. | 25 | | Deathspell Omega Si Monumentum Requires Circumspice
Some really frightening moments on this black metal album, grim and blasphemous. | |

01.02.10 | good stuff here
only #2 was on my top 20
I need to listen to some of this | jingledeath
01.02.10 | Excellent list but I disagree with a lot of the descriptions. 2,4,7,8,11,12,13,17,20 and 25 are all awesome. | witchxrapist
01.02.10 | loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool | chaos17
01.02.10 | decent list
I'm a fan of 8 and 12
and 25 is amazing (although I am partial to Fas) | MindTrain
01.02.10 | This list just plain fucking sucks. | JWT155
01.02.10 | No In Flames :( and as much as I liked Death Magnetic, to have it on a top 25 list of the decade is comical to say the least. | Hawks
01.02.10 | Some great shit on here. 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, and 23 are all really good. | ZeroTolerance
01.02.10 | Brokencyde - Brutal Death Metal from hell | Dryden
01.02.10 | few here are good. but just a few | witchxrapist
01.02.10 | mindtrain knows whats up | PuerkitoBio
01.03.10 | Having In Flames in there would have been comical (to say the least). | Fuff24
01.03.10 | This list just plain fucking sucks. | JessTheDane
01.03.10 | Wow. Lots of douche-bags posted before me. Anyway... I didn't really dig "Demigod" with it's recycled Anthrax riff, but in general, this is a fine list. | Zoo
01.03.10 | List is pretty decent although it's brought down by some mediocre material. | PuerkitoBio
01.03.10 | I don't mind the douchebag comments, it's just their primitive way of saying they disagree with the list. But for the other comments, as the one by Zoo, it would be much more interesting, for the sake of discussion, if said "mediocre material" was pointed out. I can guess a few - I know some of my choices are far from consensual.
For example, I know 3 and 5 (to limit the examples to the top 10) get their fair share of critics (not necessarily that specific album for CC, but the band in general). And 7 and 9 may not be everybody's album of choice. For the rest of the top 10, I don't think there's much to argue, quality-wise. They're all widely praised metal albums. Obviously, whatever's said won't change a thing, this is my personal list, but it'd make an interesting discussion to go beyond "this is crap" and "some are mediocre" and get more specific - with argumentation. But then again, this is Sputnik... | relativeworld
02.03.11 | 3 and 23 ...OMFG ! come on !
