My Decade In Metal

Checked out my metal albums of the 2000's, limited the list to one per band. Yes, I'm mostly a death metal fan.
1Deicide
The Stench of Redemption

Finally a great album by one of the founding fathers of death. The line-up
change brought some fresh ideas, and some astounding solos.
2Behemoth
Demigod

Probably at the peak of their career, they still put out great albums, but the
ferocity of this one has never been topped.
3Cannibal Corpse
The Wretched Spawn

Constant greatness defines this band, and this past decade they delivered 4
(and a half) rotting beasts of top-notch quality.
4 Anata
The Conductor's Departure

Technicality meets melody in a surprising fashion. Unforgettable riffs, complex
songwriting, a masterpiece.
5Slayer
World Painted Blood

At last, they're back. Going back to their roots, the legendary band gave us a
hell of a
thrash album this year. Too bad so many people didn't give it a chance.
6Suffocation
Suffocation

The masters of brutal death released their best since... oh well, maybe their
best, period.
Mike Smith is incredible, by the way.
7Amon Amarth
Twilight of the Thunder God

I like my metal technical and brutal. But once in a while, I need some melodic,
hair-rising, blood-
pumping, anthem-shouting metal. This is it.
8Orphaned Land
Mabool (The Story of the Three Sons...)

Never heard of them before this. Incredibly well written concept album, melodic
leads, moody
sections, orient meets death metal meets power metal, this is more than the sum
of its parts.
9Mayhem
Chimera

Powerful, cold and actually "listenable" album by the legends of black
metal. A brief pause in the
experimentation / ambience band they seem to have become.
10Exodus
Tempo Of the Damned

What a comeback by a second-tier thrash band. With 2 more strong efforts after
this one, it looks
like Exodus are now on top of the thrash food chain.
11Bolt Thrower
Those Once Loyal

Simple yet effective death metal. It sounds like war.
12Immolation
Close to a World Below

Inimitable riffing by one of the best guitar players there is, and a doomy,
scary voice and
focused, accusing lyrics, this is Immolation in a nutshell.
13Immortal
Sons of Northern Darkness

Their last effort before a successful re, this is filled with crazy fast and
"catchy" (if this
can apply to black metal) riffs and the trademark voice of Abbath.
14Kataklysm
Shadows and Dust

Northern hyperblasters at their best, no fillers, just great headbanging, hook-
driven death
metal.
15Satyricon
Volcano

From the thrashy Fuel for Hatred to the epic and dark closer Black Lava, this
turned out to be the
last great record from this band.
16Metallica
Death Magnetic

Gone are the simplistic radio-ready hard rock songs of the 90's, and gone are
the nu- or
whatever influences of St-Anger. Metallica's back.
17Bloodbath
The Fathomless Mastery

I don't care much for this being a "supergroup", I don't care much for their
"main" bands, this is
the real stuff, this is what I'd expect from Morbid Angel, but it came out from
Sweden instead.
18 Les Ekorches
IV Demons

Probably no one on Sputnik knows about this band from Quebec. French songs,
accoustic instruments,
yet metal as hell.
19Neuraxis
The Thin Line Between

Saw this band live last year, got the album just months ago, could've been even
higher given more playing
time. Great technical death metal band, somehow reminiscent of Anata, although
less melodic and intricate.
20Enforsaken
The Forever Endeavor

An excellent melodic death metal album, with guest appearance by legendary lead
guitarist James
Murphy.
21Dismember
Dismember

Ah, that swedish old-school guitar sound... Of the big three of the golden years
(Unleashed and Entombed being the other 2), they're my personal favorites
nowadays.
22Xasthur
To Violate the Oblivious

This is lo-fi, suicidal, atmospheric black metal by a one-man band that sounds
like it
was recorded in his basement with no budget (and it probably was). Yet it sounds
perfect for the genre.
23Cradle Of Filth
Damnation and a Day

I guess this is their last album before selling-out. Not as good as their 90's
Dusk...,
Cruelty... and V Empire..., but this is a surprisingly complex and rich concept
album.
24Motorhead
Kiss Of Death

30 years and counting, and back with a highly respectable metal/hard rock album
graced with
Lemmy's unique voice.
25Deathspell Omega
Si Monumentum Requires Circumspice

Some really frightening moments on this black metal album, grim and blasphemous.
