9 Musicians Who Are Smarter Than You

Because seriously, what are you doing with YOUR life?
9GWAR
Scumdogs of the Universe

Michael Bishop aka Beefcake the Mighty aka Blothar: The founding bassist and now lead vocalist of GWAR also has a PhD in music history, specializing in musical ethnography. He has also a featured speaker on TED talks. Even if GWAR is not your thing (though it should be), you can still hang out with him by taking one of his classes at the University of Virginia.
8The Offspring
Smash

Dexter Holland: He's this low on the list because he never finished his PhD in Molecular Biology at the University of Southern California, choosing rather to drop out and sell a few million records with The Offspring. This makes him an underachiever by this list's standards. However, Holland is busy rectifying that right now and is working on completing his PhD at USC.
7Bad Religion
Generator

Greg Gaffin: He has a Master's degree in Geology and a PhD in Zoology and currently teaches classes at Cornell University. He has also written a couple of books about evolution, and I'm pretty sure reading them while listening to Bad Religion is the way they were meant to be experienced.
6Ladytron
Witching Hour

Mira Aroyo: DJ, bilingual singer-songwriter, PhD in Genetics from Oxford University. Yup.
5Sigh
Imaginary Sonicscape

Dr. Mikannibal: Black Metal saxophonist, PhD in Physics from Tokyo University. Also pretty darn hot.
4Dare
Out of the Silence

Brian Cox: Professor of Particle Physics at Manchester University, TV science presenter, played keyboards in Dare (with former members of Thin Lizzy) and D:Ream.
3Ninja Sex Party
Cool Patrol

"Ninja Brian" Wecht: The rare instance of an academician—he has a PhD in Particle Physics and held research positions at Harvard and MIT—giving up his academic career to be a musician.
2Boston
Boston

Tom Scholz: Scholz has only a lowly Master's degree in Engineering from MIT, but he might very well be the smartest person on this list. He was a successful product engineer with Polaroid before saying "fuck that corporate bullshit", single-handedly built himself a state-of-the-art recording studio from scratch, straight-up invented several pieces of musical equipment including the Power Soak and Rockman amp, and wrote and recorded the greatest AOR album ever written.
1Queen
A Night at the Opera

Brian May: Legendary rockstar by day, astrophysicist by night. Also, he has been building his own guitars since he was a teenager.
