The Definitive Post-Rock List

I've decided to compile a list of what I think are essential listens within the post-rock genre. They are listed from most influential/popular to lesser known/newcomers. In the deions are a short sub-genre as well as the next best albums, in order from best to least best. Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada


The heavy hitter of the post-rock world. Godpseed brings together dark

Spiderland


Way ahead of their time, Slint brought dark poetry together with now what is
known as post-rock music to form a masterpiece within the genre.

Laughing Stock


Another one of the founders of the genre, Talk Talk uses epic buildups and
climaxes to draw the listener into a world painted by the music. Lyrics also
accompany many of the songs. Recommended next: Spirit of Eden

Tortoise


The debut from this post rock band in 1994 shaped the next wave of post-rock.
Combining various genres within typical post-rock

The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place


Explosions built off the quite and ambient sounds of post-rock to build a
beautiful piece of music that is heralded within all post-rock communities.

God is an Astronaut introduced electronic sounds to traditional post-rock music
to create an interesting blend of electronic and post music. Recommended next:

Yndi Halda gathers all of the best parts from their influences to great overly
epic pieces of music.
13 Pelican
Ephemeral EP


Borrowing from bands such as Red Sparowes and Mogwai, Pelican crafts post-
metal
and post-rock better than all of the other imitators. Recommended next:

14Mono / Worlds End Girlfriend
Palmless Prayer / Mass Murder Refrain


A one man Japanese project, World's End Girlfriend uses electronic noises and
epic
buildups to create some of the most hauntingly beautiful music in the post-
rock
world.

15Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra
He Has Left Us Alone...


Compared largely to Godspeed (Mike Moya of Godspeed is in the band), A Silver
Mount Zion uses dark ambiance and lyrics to make chillingly great music.

Hailed as the American Sigur Ros, Kyte lives up to this name by creating
beautiful music

Ocean Songs


Just as the name implies this three piece puts forth gripping and intricate post-
rock
usually based around a central theme. The violin work is most prominent in
their music, but
the drumming and guitars both add to epic soundscapes. Recommended next:

24Sparrows Swarm and Sing

Like Godspeed's little brother, Sparrows call upon ominous samples and drawn
out
dark
melodies that come to crushing climaxes.
