Dark Expressionism
3.7 - black metal from New Jersey.
If Dark Expressionism is reminiscent of anything, that's Opeth's My Arms, Your Hearse. The reason is that quite few of the riffs can be played with an acoustic guitar, on par with the short-lived interludes situated in between full-time, quite extended cuts. That said, Worthless' sophomore album is anything but a blatant ripoff of Opeth's magnum opus, due to the ferocity and melancholy pronounced herein by the relentless/various tempo black metal character, the fitting sound work (Arthur Rizk was involved, among others), and the genuine anguish propagated by the vocals, which brought in mind Sun of Nothing and their most recent album Guilty of Feeling Alive... Scourge of the Stars
3.6 - black metal from Greece.
Before anything, significant reference is due to the superb sound work especially for such an underground outfit. Tremendous depth has been bestowed to all instruments, while no discount is evident regarding the coarse grained demeanor of a great second wave/atmospheric black that the album strives for. Scourge of the Stars has a bit of post metal under the hood as well, sagely concealed mostly within the rhythm section, and less in the guitars, which have taken their fair bit from the Thorns demos. No matter what lineup Thorpe assembles in each release, Vicious Rumors are always dependable at the very least. That said, Celebration Decay presents itself as more balanced than its predecessor, although it's bound to reside in the shadow of the band's summits, since the song writing does not tread on any of the known boundaries.
