Sled Island Music Festival
There are several features on this site of music festivals, but sadly
the only one i am able to attend is the lovely Sled Island festival from
Calgary, Alberta, Canada (woot). Here are the bands that i was able
to see, in relative order of seen-ness |
1 | Colourbook
Local band from victoria, put on the best show on opening night |
2 | The Coathangers
An all girl indie band that didn't blow chunks. Kinda screechy vocals but
played some excellent tunes. Their drummer was a beast and broke a
bottle over her head. |
3 | These Arms Are Snakes
The first band you will recognize. Had some tech issues with their bassist
that compromised their sound but still played one hell of a short show.
Their vocalist had a mean mustache and tore the bathroom sign down |
4 | Monotonix
Those who have been to a Monotonix show understand. 3 crazy dudes put
on the craziest show i have ever seen. They play in the audience, with the
audience, and on top of the audience. I took home a piece of the broken
roof. Words really fail to describe it. they are a MUST SEE BAND. |
5 | Biz Markie
Mainstage day, Biz Markie was the lone hip-hop act i saw, and he reminded
me how hip-hop could be fun again. Did mostly old skool with some beat
boxing and a little tribute to M.J. |
6 | Anvil
YES! The old Canadian Metal acts that never went anywhere, but have a
cool documentary, tried to rock out, but it was the wrong crowd for them.
Tried to be serious, which made it all the more fun. Showed have opened
for Megadeath on the weekend instead. |
7 | Liars
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy too short of a set. Really enjoyable, i loved
how their lead signer looks a little lie mick jagger |
8 | The Breeders
Holy Shit its the Breeders! Headlining the main stage and coming playing till
the cities noise bylaws kicked in ( the show was outside) the breeders still
had it in them, the the quirkiest set on the festival, in the best sense
possible. I really enjoyed them as well. |
9 | Women
You hipesters sure love Women. They are the best thing coming out of
Calgary besides Chad VanGaalen. Their show was alright, as it was identical to when i saw them a couple months ago. |
10 | Githead
Holy Shit, its Colin Newman. The Genius behind Wire (and also the curator
of the festival) jammed with his new band. I enjoyed mostly because it was
Colin Newman. Found myself getting a little sleepy at the end of his set,
since it was the last night of 4 consecutive 3 am-ers. Still bought his CD |
11 | HEALTH
You know how i said i was getting sleepy? Then HEALTH came on. Third
best show of the festival, and easily the loudest. They were so balls to the
wall it was unreal. I got one of the drummers broken drum sticks. |
12 | Holy Fuck
They played on the mainstage too, but the last show of the festival blew it
all away. Crazy improve and using all their non instruments, they created
the best dance party I have ever been a part of. Being close enough to
twist his weird film reader thingy (i have no idea what it is actually called)
made it all the better. Crowd went nuts for Lovely Allen. |
