Masochist
10.20.08 | Hmmm...when I first got into music, the farthest I would go was System of a Down. Then I heard Slipknot and Iron Maiden, and started attacking metal from two different points-of-entry. I don't know if that'll work for you, of course, but it mgiht be something to think on.
For starters, I'd still suggest trying Iron Maiden. Not only are they accessible, but they're also one of the best ever. For something more...ahh, "epic," you might try Nightwish. They have a very beautiful and full sound, complete with orchestral instruments and near-operatic female vocals. Might be too much, though. You could always try Avenged Sevenfold's "Waking The Fallen" as a buffer to get started; as a friend once stated, "They're like the boy-band of the metal world." Just some suggestions.
OR...
You might dare to be different, and embrace the fact that metal just might not be your cup of tea. In that case, get more Thrice, and pick up Dredg and Fair To Midland. And Porcupine Tree. Stuff like that. |

10.20.08 | I second that^^^ |
iarescientists
10.20.08 | listen to ulver - bergtatt and burzum - hvis lyest tar oss and wolves in the throne room - two hunters and other black metal shit because that is what hipster fags like you and me like |
Electric City
10.20.08 | oh dude, Maudlin of the Well- Bath. You'll love it. And subsequently Kayo Dot's Choirs of the Eye but thats a whole nother ballpark |
elephantREVOLUTION
10.20.08 | System of a Down and Maiden were the main bands that got me into metal too. and porcupine tree is a great pick. if you dont like any of them then maybe metal just isn't for you. |

10.20.08 | My friend, the world of metal is full of awe-inspiring music, you just need the correct entry point. I highly recommend what Masochist said.

Fear of the Dark by Iron Maiden. This was my first heavy metal song, it was like stepping into Charlie's Chocolate factory. Go out and buy (or download) Waking the Fallen by Avenged Sevenfold.
Then listen to the album Ride The Lightning by Metallica. I seriously can't think of a better starting point than Iron Maiden and Metallica. For mainstream metal, it doesn't get better than Waking the Fallen by Avenged Sevenfold. And I know I'll get ripped for saying that. |

10.20.08 | No no no..don't stop. I started my journey with System of a Down, Breaking Benjamin and Godsmack. I progressively got into heavier stuff.
I completely agree with what Masochist says. Try Maiden first. |
Thor
10.20.08 | Metallica - Ride the Lightning |
fireaboveicebelow
10.20.08 | it would also help to say what you already enjoy |
Athom
10.20.08 | Seriously, try some Isis. I would reccomend starting with Panopticon and In The Absence of Truth. And even though its by no means a metal album get Thrice's Illusion of Safety. I know many people that used that album as a bridge into heavier music. |
marksellsuswallets
10.20.08 | extremely off topic but does anybody else think of Zombie Nation during the "ooo ooo ooo" part in the beginning of Fear Of The Dark? |

10.21.08 | as metal is my favorite genre, i definitely think you should try getting into it. but if you genuinely don't like metal, then don't beat yourself up over it. everyone is different with their musical tastes. but the other dudes here have given you some good starting points. |
BallsToTheWall
10.21.08 | Metal domination still running strong through sputnik for the win. Frankly, there's one band that singlehandely trumps each and every suggestion that's already posted and/or posted after mine.....Battle Hymns from manowar. Nothing touches Manowar. |
Chewie
10.21.08 | Mastodon- Leviathan
Protest The Hero- Kezia
Nightwish- Once
Deftones- White Pony |
DethThrasher
10.21.08 | Megadeth Metallica Death Judas Priest Iron Maiden is all you really need |
Crysis
10.21.08 | Masochist pretty much gave the best advice. |
SCREAM!
10.21.08 | System Of A Down - S/t
Disillusion - Back To Times Of Splendor
Protest The Hero - Either album
Children Of Bodom - Follow The Reaper (if my gf can get into this one you damn better be able to :P) |
Burning_October
10.21.08 | I had this exact same problem before, and I just gave up on it. I honestly just cant get into metal. However, looking through your album ratings, I noticed that you and I have some very similar music tastes. So, heres some non-metal albums that maybe you'll enjoy:
Muse- Origin of Symmetry
Weezer- Pinkerton
Weezer- The Blue Album
Anything By Arcade Fire
AFI- Sing The Sorrow |

10.21.08 | U have to tart easy, no need to get death or black metal at first, you'll grow on that later when u get use to it. Start of with Master of Puppets by Metallica.
My first time metal band was Iron Maiden and they are awesome, check out Number of the Beast. |
Granfalloon
10.21.08 | thanks for all the suggestions... I prob. should have been a little more clear about where I'm starting tho. I really like Thrice (especially Alch. Indexes III + IV) and I've heard some really good deftones songs... that being said, I've tried PTH, hated it, but I'll give Iron Maiden and System, Ulver, n Nightwish a try.
Masochist, you hit the nail on the head with Dredg, Porc. Tree, and FTM... a few of my fav.s. With metal being so prevalent in sputnik I guess I owed it to myself to delve a little further into that area... I had a feeling this list would be successful... thx again

10.21.08 | also listen to Devin Townsend
The Devin Townsend Band-Accelerated Evolution or Synchestra
then try Strapping Young Lad because, tho heavy, they have underlining sensibilities...plus they were te first death metal band i liked |
YouAreMySilence
10.21.08 | Closedown - Beflexion and Polarities
check out the song "Where Everybody Loses". That song got me into heavy music. |
ASberg
10.21.08 | It's all about Napalm Death and early Carcass man. Scum and Reek Of Putrification. Bombard yourself for hours on end with grindcore and by the end of the day you will be begging for some Opeth to soften things up. |
AngelPhoenix
10.21.08 | There seems to be a very strong desire to bring as many people as possible into the fold of metal awesomeness.
And that's a good thing. Wish I could help, but I'm sure my compatriots have everything covered.
I got into metal most directly through Fear Factory and Rammstein, Lamb of God, As I Lay Dying, and Dark Tranquillity followed. |
Captain North
10.21.08 | I got into metal through Linkin Park (shut up) and then later, In Flames, Killswitch Engage and Soilwork. 'Cos they're accessible - even then, when I first heard them...the first 20 odd times I was like 'wtf is this shit'. Unclean vocals take awhile to get used to - read the lyrics while you listen, it helps tremendously. |
Ironpriest
10.21.08 | looks like your not into all the modern heavy metal bands. i highly suggest Iron Maiden, easily one of the most brilliant bands to walk the earth. Judas Priest is also another name that hasn't been mentioned, their old but his vocals are not as harsh as many modern metal bands (his still one of the best singers though!)
i dunno, you could try some tame 80's metal. Skid Row and Motley Crue might float your boat. catchy as hell with fun riffs. |
TheHamburgerman
10.21.08 | Typ in Power Metal at Wikipedia and download some bands. Power Metal bands are quite acsecible and if you can handle the gayness at times it might be your new favorite genre. |
BallsToTheWall
10.21.08 | Manowar. Fuck all these pussy bands. |
