Death Metal 2022 Rated
Lots of decent DM dropping this year and we're only about halfway through. What y'all think? Am I being too harsh on some of these or not enough? |
1 | | Immolation Acts of God
Peak Immolation is always good, and this is easily their best work in 12 years.
3.9 |
2 | | Desolate Shrine Fires of the Dying World
I honestly forgot this even came out. Very solid dirty death metal, unafraid of hefty track lengths.
3.4 |
3 | | Father Befouled Crowned in Veneficum
Another one I completely forgot about until now, but not because it's bad. Slightly doomier and likely produced to sound older and grosser, but still fun.
3.3 |
4 | | Undeath It's Time...To Rise From the Grave
Really looked forward to this one and it didn't disappoint, will have to do some comparison listens to see how it stacks up to the debut though.
3.5 |
5 | | Corpsessed Succumb to Rot
I love this guy's voice, it's so barrel-chested and huge to match the rest of the record. Chunky.
3.7 |
6 | | Thorium Danmark
Stumbled upon this accidentally in my local record shop, and it kinda sounds like if Amon Amarth if AA had an ounce of creativity left (in a good way). Also, "Semen of the Devil" lol
3.4 |
7 | | Cosmic Putrefaction Crepuscular Dirge for the Blessed Ones
Vaguely blackened, definitely murky as all hell, riffs for years.
3.7 |
8 | | Rotten Tomb Visions of Dismal Fate
Haven't heard much chatter over this one, but it's some pretty good cavernous shit, like three layers of reverb on the vocals.
3.3 |
9 | | Haunter (USA-TX) Discarnate Ails
More heavily blackened, and more of a "proggy" slow burner. Also, another animal of a vocalist.
3.5 |
10 | | Encenathrakh Ithate Thngth Oceate
BDM from the Krallice people, so you can imagine it's super wanky. Sounds like Portal did a bunch of meth. Take that as you will.
2.7 |
11 | | Obscene (USA-IN) ...From Dead Horizon to Dead Horizon
More ellipses. I'll admit that I liked this but not as much as their debut, at least not immediately. May grow on me, may not, but still solid nonetheless.
3.2 |
12 | | Sadistic Drive Perpetual Torture
I love this band already and this is only record #2. Straightforward grody-ass death metal.
3.8 |
13 | | Artificial Brain Artificial Brain
I think everyone was pretty excited for this, and it follows through for the most part. There's a lot going on, but after awhile it all syncs up and you can tell how nicely complex the melodies are. Vocals are a little misplaced, could use more variety but I love me some gutturals SO
3.8 |
14 | | Abysmalist Vile Possession
I oddly don't hate this as much as its measly two ratings, but there's also nothing incredible or special about it either.
2.9 |
15 | | The Chasm The Scars of a Lost Reflective Shadow
Was so excited to hear about this, and again not a disappointment but not a REVELATION either. This is perfectly enjoyable, especially if you're already a Chasm fan. There's loads of delicious riffs here.
3.6 |
16 | | Suppression The Sorrow Of Soul Through Flesh
Someone compared this to old Pestilence so I had to check it out. For sure recommend if you're into that sort of thing. Been a car jam for a couple days now.
3.7 |
17 | | Grave Infestation Persecution of the Dead
Pretty sure this is called Persecution of the Living lol, I might try to fix that in a sec. A wonderful surprise this one was, a ripper with some actually good solos.
3.7 |
18 | | Dischordia Triptych
That messy sort of technical death metal that I blame on Luc Lemay, filled with odd twinkly melodic moments. Still significantly more enjoyable than the slop that is that Encenathrakh...
3.2
3.2 |
19 | | Origin Chaosmos
Our band is actually opening for these guys on the 14th, and I'm beyond stoked. Glad this turned out to be a genuinely good record, and another car jammer.
3.7 |
20 | | Oceanic Void Demo 2022
SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION: This is our band and our 4-song demo. We're on Spotify and Apple Music if you wanna check us out, we appreciate it SO so much. |
