1Dream Theater
Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory

Overall a solid record, but I just can’t shake that this band peaked for me with Awake. There’s a lack of weight without Kevin Moore, some of my favorite Dream Theater moments are when he’s holding back and letting the atmosphere seep in like in “Voices” or “The Mirror”. Jordan Rudess is certainly incredibly talented, but he keeps trying to shred with the rest of the band. But for a band as dedicated to maximalist proficiency as Dream Theater, this record serves as their definitive statement. Even if you aren’t paying too close to the concept, you’ll walk away from this feeling like a complete story was told.

Images and Words

Liked this a lot more on this relisten. Used to think this was too cheesy but the cheese went down a lot smoother when I thought of how much I would be into it if it was on Power Windows. I’ve had too many fond memories of trying to get 5 stars on drums to Metropolis Part 1 in Rock Band to not bump my rating.
3Fiona Apple
When the Pawn...

Wonderful record. For some reason whenever I listen to singer-songwriter albums I always expect something muted and sparse, but this was way more knotty and dizzying than I expected, with piano playing that feels like an infinitely spiraling staircase. Apple has such a strong command of her voice, how she can go from a bellowing roar to a lilted murmur. Also maybe it’s me but I think it’s funny how many vocal tics the Alien Ant Farm guy cribbed from Fiona Apple.
4The Beat
Special Beat Service

LA has officially declared May 22 to be The English Beat day. No idea the reason why, but I can think of worse things to dedicate a whole day to. What a wonderful mix of ska and new wave. Their sound is the equivalent of chilling on the beach with the fruitiest margarita. Featuring such hits as I Confess, that song you know from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and that song you think is by the Talking Heads but isn’t. Honestly I could 5 this, can’t think of a single track I don’t like.
5Liturgy
H.A.Q.Q.

What a wild, creative, borderline unhinged world that Liturgy have created. I’ve only listened to their three most recent records, and out of the bunch this is my favorite. While I find this band’s overuse of crescendos to be exhausting, I really love how this band incorporates glitches into their sound. Glitches work so seamlessly in metal, it complicates the cacophony of the instruments obfuscating when guitars enter and disappear. It’s like drinking Crystal Pepsi: at first you think you’re drinking a lemon-lime soda then BOOM now it tastes like Pepsi. Anyway, this album rules and I miss Crystal Pepsi.
6Devo
New Traditionalists

Hits you right in the autism. Their songs are so danceable in such stiff ways. Love these old chunky synths. They sound heavy, not in a metal way, like you could drop them on someone’s head and do some Gallagher shit. They have a formula that they lean on almost to a fault, but even in the age of synthesizers there was nothing else like Devo.
7Avenged Sevenfold
Waking the Fallen

These guys have been aching for a reappraisal from me for a while. I checked this not only because of the new record, but because I’ve been thinking about Sleep Token and what makes a gimmick “cool”. I used to hate this band because I thought their image was stupid, and it is, but there’s plenty of bands with tacky gimmicks that I love. Am I really the one to throw stones? So when I checked this I was kinda blown away. While this kind of At The Gates-y melodic metalcore is not my thing, it’s still impressive in how eclectic it gets while maintaining a beginning-to-end listening experience. As far as gimmicks go, hey, this sounds like music made by guys named shit like Synyster Gates. And while 11 year old me would loathe to admit it, their songs were pretty fun to play in Rock Band.
