gabba's mid-year list for 2025

Instead of just whining about how dead sputnik has become recently, I figured I'd add some content, so here are my faves for 2025 so far. Honorable mentions: 1) mclusky: The World Is Still Here and So Are We (sarcastic punk/post-hardcore); 2) Model/Actriz: Pirouette (artsy post-punk fuelled by queer powers); 3) The Limiñanas: Faded (electro-psychedelia with lots of French spoken word). Most anticipated release for the rest of 2025: Lorelle Meets the Obsolete: Corporal (Mexican masters of psychedelia, check this if you think you're ready: https://obsoletelorelle.bandcamp.com/album/regresar-recordar).
11Blonde Redhead
The Shadow of the Guest

Best EP of 2025, my gateway drug to ASMR???
10The Underground Youth
Décollage

My secret favorite band no one has heard of. It's business as usual, with the same(y) moody slow-paced set of songs that sound like soundtracks from never-made arthouse movies. I'm a sucker for this sound, and if you dig Nick Cave, The Velvet Underground or The Brian Jonestown Massacre, you need to check them. Start with their other albums though, "What Kind Of Dystopian Hellhole Is This?" and "Haunted" are waiting to be loved.
9The Murder Capital
Blindness

Murder Capital's previous release Gigi's Recovery was a near masterpiece of modern post-punk so I was very eager to hear their new material. The album's start is a bit underwhelming, and on the whole it doesn't get me engaged the same way. The second part is quite strong thought, and by the last notes of "Trailing A Wing" I always feel I'm sold. I know I'm cheap, but still...
8Swans
Birthing

At this point in my life I should listen to any new Swans album completely naked, assuming that I'd wet my pants anyways so what's the point? Despite this, Birthing was more difficult for me to get into and I'm probably the only person in the World to think that it is their weakest album since My Father... Overall the album doesn't bring much new to their oeuvre, and it rather feels like a montage of tried-and-tested sound. But boy, the triad of "Red Yellow", "Guardian Spirit" and "The Merge" hit hard. And then, everything is forgiven.
7M(h)aol
Something Soft

This is artsy feminist post-punk with plenty of noise, playfulness and wtf moments. The first time I heard it I nearly cried because I never thought a band would fill the void Erase Errata left in my soul. And yeah, "Vin Diesel" is the song of the year.
6Decius
Decius Vol. II

Decius has Fat White Family's Lias Saoudi on vocals, and it shows. However, instead of decadent art-punk, they bring us decadent dance/house that will only leave your buttocks still instead of wiggling around if you don't have them.
5Ditz
Never Exhale

Ditz is a band that almost got the best post-punk/noise rock album title of this list, and it's still close. They've got angular beats, catchy lyrics, and they sure know how to build a sound that teases us with a huge climax but never really explodes.
4Snapped Ankles
Hard Times Furious Dancing

The dance album of 2025 (so far) was delivered by the self-proclaimed forest people of London. As the title suggests, you should dance furiously to these beats and forget how rotten everything is. 摆烂
3Ethel Cain
Perverts

I really hated Preacher's Daughter with its autotune-drenched pseudo-pop of religio-sexual flavors, and Perverts won't make me change my mind. However, this album is completely different, feels like I'm being dragged into a huge vagina dentata that arouses and disgusts me at the same time. Instead of trying to get out I keep digging deeper under its hypnotic spell, driven by the desire to become consumed by its uneasy drones. I honestly don't think Cain will ever be able to get anywhere near this....EP, but I'll also check her upcoming album just to prove my point.
2Deafheaven
Lonely People With Power

There's not much that hasn't been already said about this album. I'm not a metalhead, and I never thought I'd be so addicted to an album that has shrieks and power-riffs all over, but here we are. And yes, to my taste it is better than Sunbather, no matter how blasphemous it sounds. God will either forgive me, or find me, bring me, cut me down. Don't care.
1Sentries
Gem of the West

I wouldn't say this came as unexpected as the Spanish inquisition since their last year's album already kicked major @ss, but I was still instantly nailed by the energy, versatility, flow and production of this album. This is how noise rock should sound in 2025, and I'm glad I made this far to hear it. Considering that it is the product of one guy all I can do is submit (hail, Kim Elliot!). Mark your calendars, new EP is coming on July 25.
