favorite 5 albums of 2019

2020 is gonna be a good year (and hopefully decade) for music given what we've gotten these past 365 days. top 5 of 2019 in order
1Xiu Xiu
Girl with Basket of Fruit

I honestly am unsure of how to describe my thoughts on this one. It’s just straight up weird - I mean, really, really fucking weird. It kind of reminds me of the early work of Swans but it takes the road less traveled, committing itself fully to very strange lyrics and industrial sounds.
2Tyler, the Creator
IGOR

Tyler’s latest outing isn’t his best (that would be Flower Boy) but it IS second best, which is still breathtaking. Tyler dives head first into a more R&B and soul-infused adventure, which almost reads like a concept album. It’s like walking through a dream.
3Lana Del Rey
Norman Fucking Rockwell!

I didn’t expect to like this because I haven’t cared Lana del Rey much before, my thoughts have always been “It's alright.” The vocals are crooning, each song makes its run time mean something (Venice Bitch runs on a little too long, but I don’t tend to mind it). It’s wonderful and lives up to the aesthetic of a romance film.
4Blood Incantation
Hidden History of the Human Race

Best death metal record of the year, by far. Very technical playing, even though this thing is only 4 tracks long (but it is over half an hour, so, yeah) it never feels like it’s wasting its time goofing around on any already done ideas. I wish it was an hour long. Vocals are monstrous, huge improvement over Starspawn; which was also fantastic but not THIS good. Truly feels like a brutal soundtrack to a horror/science fiction movie.
5Black Midi
Schlagenheim

Experimental rock done perfectly, and I can see this album eventually being used as a benchmark for the future of the genre as a whole. It reminds me of Melt-Banana but not as high pitched and over hyper-active, but it definitely has that enthusiasm that carries it throughout the entire project. It has some early math rock vibes but it mostly focuses on being eclectic, and bounces from song to song. It has me pretty damn excited for their next project.
