Deftones Re-Ranked

i have become enlightened

kind of hard to get into but by no means is this album bad. i love the aggression but the slower parts kind of bore me a little because they don't fill in the space with much like they do in later records. it's their debut so i can forgive that, but it doesn't really hit me too hard. underdeveloped but gritty enough for me to still dig.
favorite tracks: minus blindfold, 7 words, birthmark, engine no. 9

some of these songs drag on way too long, but the songs that manage to meld with the atmosphere are wonderful. i just wish some tracks like the title track didn't just go on and on. a decent mix of great tracks but there are so many duds here.
favorite tracks: prayers/triangles, doomed user, geometric headdress, xenon, (l)mirl, phantom bride, rubicon
Around the Fur

chino's vocals are so fucking cool and beautiful on this album while still having that weird dreamy sensation that carries on into future albums past this. though hints of adrenaline are still very obvious on this record. it definitely steps up with the aggression and just how hard it beats into you.
favorite tracks: lhabia, mascara, around the fur, rickets, be quiet and drive, lotion, headup

very thick album, chino's screams on this album are some of my favorites of his in general. the nu metal sound that i've come to expect is still there as a layer but this album feels a lot more drawn out and like you're floating in a violent void of sound.
favorite tracks: hexagram, minerva, good morning beautiful, deathblow, when girls telephone boys, bloody cape, moana
Saturday Night Wrist

perfect combination of spacey, dreamy and aggression though the latter of those three is toned down a bit which i don't mind at all. a change of pace from their self titled and it's welcome. pink cellphone is something else though....
favorite tracks: hole in the earth, beware, cherry waves, mein, U,U,D,D,L,R,L,R,A,B,Select,Start, xerces, rats!rats!rats!, combat, kimdracula
White Pony

this is where deftones definitely takes off for me. almost every song on this thing is fucking monstrous, nightmarish and filled to the brim with madness. even with songs like back to school which sounds like it belongs on around the fur, it manages to help propel this album into its own identity. maynard on this album also turns it from great to fucking downright amazing. first heard this album thanks to a dragon ball movie that had Change in it when i was a kid.
favorite tracks: back to school, feiticeira, digital bath, street carp, knife prty, korea, passenger, change, pink maggit
Diamond Eyes

every song on this record feels full, the songs you've seen the butcher and sextape are probably in my top 5 favorite deftones songs. this whole album feels like an oddly comfortable fever dream
favorite tracks: diamond eyes, royal, cmnd/ctrl, you've seen the butcher, beauty school, prince, rocket skates, sextape, risk, 976-EVIL, this place is death
Koi No Yokan

every single track here feels so pristine and like it brings something new to the table, though the style has not actually been changed up too much. it amazes just how consistent this band is when they put out gorgeous music like this almost every album.
favorite tracks: swerve city, romantic dreams, leathers, poltergeist, entombed, graphic nature, tempest, gauze, rosemary, goon squad, what happened to you?
