Fave Non 2025 Songs this Year
Some are new discoveries and some rediscoveries. |
| 1 | | Radiohead Hail to the Thief
'2 + 2 = 5'
Never that taken with this song at time of release but it hits now. I guess before parenthood you think there's only so much harm a government can do to you, but once you're a parent you realise there's no end to the harm a government can inflict on your child, which is terrifying. |
| 2 | | Fleet Foxes Shore
'Featherweight'
Definitely one of their best songs that initially I'd lost track of in the slight beige'ness of the parent album. |
| 3 | | Simply Red Picture Book
'Jericho'
Very strong nostalgia here, gently swings, this debut album has some undeniable good song writing. |
| 4 | | Jamie T Panic Prevention
'Calm Down Dearest'
Revisited all his stuff again but the chorus of this still stands out. |
| 5 | | The Smashing Pumpkins Adore
'Behold! The Night Mare'
My two longest relationships before meeting my wife, well, they both ended around Christmas time and this album was something I played that time of year so it tended to soundtrack that - the grief in this tune is palpable. |
| 6 | | Placebo Meds
'Pierrot the Clown'
Never listened to this album really, but this is maybe their best ballad? |
| 7 | | Bloc Party Another Weekend in the City
'Rhododendrons'
One of their best songs, and the lyrics seem a mission statement of sorts, amazing it didn't make the actual 'Weekend' album. |
| 8 | | Royksopp The Inevitable End
'Sordid Affair'
The recent 'True Electric' album sent me back here, bit of a buried hit. |
| 9 | | Massive Attack Protection
'Protection'
Great last tune of the night. |
| 10 | | Prefab Sprout Crimson/Red
'Mysterious'
Don't want to be morbid, but in the running for a perfect funeral song. What a final song to bow out on, says it all. |
| 11 | | Anathema Alternative 4
'Fragile Dreams' |
| 12 | | Suicidal Tendencies Suicidal Tendencies
'Subliminal' |
| 13 | | Prong Prove You Wrong
'No Way to Deny It'
One of their best, even if it's basically a refinement of a couple of previous riffs. |
| 14 | | Slayer Christ Illusion
'Jihad'
Suitably terrifying, but also pumps you up. |
| 15 | | Hot Chip Made in the Dark
'Ready for the Floor' |
| 16 | | Depeche Mode Music for the Masses
'Little 15'
Strange outlier tune for them really, but I'd say top 5 of all their songs for me now. |
| 17 | | The Juan MacLean The Future Will Come
'One Day'
Huge nostalgia associated with this one. |
| 18 | | The Young Gods T.V. Sky
'Skinflowers' |
| 19 | | Mogwai Rock Action
'Take Me Somewhere Nice'
Put this on the late night playlist, was a good choice. |
| 20 | | Kauan Kaiho
'Lapsenmuisto'
Put this on the late night playlist, was a good choice. [2] |
| 21 | | Helmet Strap It On
'Sinatra' |
| 22 | | Madness One Step Beyond
'Night Boat to Cairo'
Madness I'd dismissed entirely but this is a stomper. |
| 23 | | The Blue Nile Peace at Last
'Sentimental Man'
100% their best 'upbeat' (relatively) song. |
| 24 | | Tim Hecker Harmony in Ultraviolet
'Chimeras' |
| 25 | | Microdisney Crooked Mile
'Town to Town'
Coolest song about nuclear war. |
| 26 | | The Stranglers Black and White
'Walk On By'
In the running for best cover version of all time. |
| 27 | | The The Dusk
'Dogs of Lust'
Johnny harmonica. |
| 28 | | Destroyer Your Blues
'Notorious Lightning'
He does openers well and this might be the best...not sure. |
| 29 | | Tindersticks The Hungry Saw
'The Turns We Took'
they do closers well and this might be the best...not sure. |
| 30 | | Alex G God Save The Animals

Wife loves it too, singalong favourite. |

'New Safe'
Becoming profound for me at this stage, meditative. |

'How I Could Just Kill a Man' |
| 33 | | The Sleepy Jackson Lovers
'Mourning Rain' |
| 34 | | Sun Kil Moon April

| 35 | | Therapy? Infernal Love
'A Moment of Clarity' |
| 36 | | Turnstile Glow On
'Holiday' |
| 37 | | Anathema Distant Satellites
'Ariel'
The fact he wrote this for his daughter, I'm a soppy shit now and that context just makes it game over for me. |
| 38 | | Elliott Smith XO
'Waltz no2' |
| 39 | | Mark Barrott Sketches from An Island
'Essene' |
| 40 | | The Antlers Green to Gold

'Safe European Home' |
| 42 | | Adrianne Lenker Abysskiss
'Symbol' |
| 43 | | JJ72 I To Sky
'Formulae'
Forgotten band for me, have their moments (like this). |
| 44 | | clipping. CLPPNG
'Body & Blood'
Still addictive. |
| 45 | | Doves (UK) Lost Souls
'The Man Who Told Everything' |
| 46 | | Ministry The Last Sucker
