Putting the Smile on Radiohead

WINNERS are songs I'd say are 'essential' (or at least essential to my enjoyment) for a Radiohead or The Smile release.
1Radiohead
OK Computer

Perfect album for me, the track flow is one of the best in rock music, every song plays its part - even if in the case of ‘Electioneering’ and ‘Climbing Up the Walls’ that’s by being outliers.

WINNERS: all of them

Rating: 100%
2Radiohead
Kid A

Nearly as perfect as ‘Computer’, flow again is very strong, a couple of slightly less incredible moments.

WINNERS: all of them

Rating: 97%
3Radiohead
In Rainbows

I remember a friend saying at the time ‘imagine if this had an iconic opener’ and that’s true, great opening song but not iconic like the openers for the two higher rated albums. Is ‘Faust Arp’ the first song on the list of those that feel a bit more B-Side’ish? Yes, still like it though.

WINNERS: 9 out of 10

The Bends

The ultimate mid 90s alt rock album in some ways, a lesser song/performance in ‘Sulk’ and maybe ‘My Iron Lung’ is a slightly weird fit.

5Radiohead
A Moon Shaped Pool

This album is a little ‘late career retread’y’ but it does find a unique enough aesthetic and in some ways points towards The Smile in sound on some of the later songs. ‘Ful Stop’ is this albums ‘most retread’y but excellent’ song.

6The Smile
A Light For Attracting Attention

Again, certainly retread’y at times, but has some very strong songs like ‘Free in the Knowledge’, ‘Pana-vision’ and ‘Skrting on the Surface’. Quite diverse, but the rockers fall a bit flat. 'The Opposite' is the most retread'y sounding one here but still very good.

7The Smile
Wall of Eyes

The latest album and still growing on me but after six listens I feel this has four excellent songs, two very good ones and two serviceable ones. It is one paced despite that being the intention and servicing the atmosphere - it makes it an album ‘for a set mood’ only and attention can drift. The closer 'You Know Me!' is the most retread'y song and not one of the best this time, though perfectly fine.

8Radiohead
Hail to the Thief

They only deliver a half excellent album, the rest really feels like filler. ‘Sail to the Moon’ is the ‘retread’y but excellent’ song on this one and makes the cut.

WINNERS: 7 out of 14

9Radiohead
Amnesiac

Again only half an excellent album and this time the remainder is even more like filler. A problem Radiohead had is the devotion of fans and the amount of B-Sides means you had a good idea what is 'B-Side level' for the band and I will never not think a few of these songs are that level, as well as personally loathing the last song here (a lot of people's favourite which goes a long way to explain my differing rating). ‘Knives Out’ is the ‘retread’y but excellent’ song this time and certainly makes the cut as it remains one of the best here.

10Radiohead
The King of Limbs

Barely a half album's worth of stuff that doesn't sound like B-Sides here - and even a song like 'Give Up the Ghost' sounds like a very 'minor' pleasure on such a short release. This time 'Codex' is the 'retread'y but excellent' song and makes the cut.

11Radiohead
Pablo Honey

I revisited this last year, played it through six times in the space of a week, it isn't so bad but also beyond about four songs nothing too special either.
