Doof Top Albums 2022

Bit of a change in format this year that the eagle eyed may notice - this time my album of the year list shows my top 100 MOST PLAYED albums - their traditional end of year ranking is noted against them, and if I didn't play them enough missing entries in my Top 100 favourites are listed in the frogstomp box, naturally...
140 Watt Sun
Perfect Light

Scrobbles: 210

Stunning album that eventually usurped its predecessor to become my favourite 40 Watt Sun - one of those classics where I can vividly remember specific times I listened to the full album and get transported back. He's really picked up that original style Sun Kil Moon baton and run with it.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 1st

Top 30 song of the year: Reveal
2Destroyer
LABYRINTHITIS

Scrobbles: 199

This being close to the Destroyer 'hot weather' album helped it pick up a lot of plays on my Easter hols - since then I guess this is one of the albums that's actually dropped off the most for me this year though I still think it's very enjoyable and more solid work from Bejar. The man keeps on trucking.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 10th

Top 30 song of the year: Tintoretto, It's for You
3Everything Everything
Raw Data Feel

Scrobbles: 194

The best seven or eight songs on this are really really strong - the most propulsive and catchy stuff the band have penned so far. The rest feels like lesser retreads from what's come before and hold the overall album down, plus I somewhat miss the bile in the vocals and lyrics.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 38th

Top 30 song of the year: Kevin's Car
4Big Thief
Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You

Scrobbles: 187

An instant classic double album in the grand tradition - this found the band exploring near enough every musical avenue you could have predicted (and a few you wouldn't have too). That the quality control remained so high was a little unexpected and if it's not an album you'll listen to front to back every time it really is one of those double albums you can choose to dip in anywhere and you'll be equally impressed give or take.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 3rd

Top 30 song of the year: Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You
5Wilco
Cruel Country

Scrobbles: 185

Double albums have that way of picking up the scrobbles, the ever prolific Wilco keep on trucking, this time in a more standard alt country vein.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 29th
6Nas
King's Disease III

Scrobbles: 182

Middle aged men rejoice - 49 year old Nas has still got it. I don't mean that in a qualified way, I mean he's only gone and released the best hip hop album of the year.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 17th

Top 30 song of the year: Thun
7Alex Cameron
Oxy Music

Scrobbles: 181

No one else liked this, the joke is so officially all over don't you know...but it's a great great album. The dark story of succumbing to a number of addictions (drugs, being painfully online, etc) is hidden behind the humour and the yacht rock/sophisti backing most of the time but it's really well done and quite hard hitting by the end. His best!

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 20th

Top 30 song of the year: Oxy Music
8Michael Head & The Red Elastic Band
Dear Scott

Scrobbles: 167

Grew on me a great deal, warm n’ wise, occasionally droll - maybe the most comforting listen of the year but the quality control setting is locked on 'high'. Any other year recently this would probably have grabbed AOTY, unlucky Michael.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 4th

Top 30 song of the year: Fluke
9Real Lies
Lad Ash

Scrobbles: 167

Improves on their debut in every way, this is how to release a sophomore album - retro '90s influences abound, while The Streets and Disclosure also remain obvious reference points. Less baggy and more rave nostalgia this time.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 12th

Top 30 song of the year: Since I
10Lambchop
The Bible

Scrobbles: 162

Says a lot about the strength of this year that an excellent Lambchop album only rates seventh on my 2022 chart - this sounds like their finale but we'll only know for sure later.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 7th

Top 30 song of the year: His Song is Sung
11Paddy Hanna
Imagine I'm Hoping

Scrobbles: 161

Paddy reconnects with a lot of what made 'Frankly, I Mutate' such a winner - one of the smoothest listens of the year and a repeat plays magnet.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 9th

Top 30 song of the year: Symphony Bacalao
12The Delines
The Sea Drift

Scrobbles: 155

The best Delines album and good to find Vlautin in rich song writing form - Amy Boone's vocals go from strength to strength and near bring a tear to the eye.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 23rd

Top 30 song of the year: Kid Codeine
13Chase and Status
What Came Before

Scrobbles: 147

Somewhere between this being a summertime guilty pleasure and gym mixtape hero this picked up a lot of scrobbles - strangely very listenable.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 100th

Top 30 song of the year: Censor
14Bill Callahan
YTI⅃AƎЯ

Scrobbles: 140

I very nearly crowned this album of the year and was also close to placing it ahead of 'Shepherd...'...but in the end it maybe missed that last sprinkle of magic. Still, for now my second favourite Callahan which is not bad going at all, there's not really a weak song here and the middle stretch is insanely good.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 2nd

Top 30 song of the year: Naked Souls
15Ry X
Blood Moon

Scrobbles: 137

King Hipster is the ultimate late night easy listen so it's 'welcome to scrobbleville' - also, actually a very solid album from him this time.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 37th
16Cass McCombs
Heartmind

Scrobbles: 134

One of the most consistent operators in indie folk right now, some of his catchiest songs on this one.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 15th

Top 30 song of the year: Unproud Warrior
17Fontaines D.C.
Skinty Fia

Scrobbles: 134

The band keep on surprising and developing, this time going in a more mature/maybe classic direction - taking pointers from The Cure and other rock stalwarts in order to broaden their palette once again. Atmosphere is king this time, but they still pack in about six real foot tappers to keep those all important energy levels up.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 5th

Top 30 song of the year: Jackie Down the Line
18Kendrick Lamar
Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers

Scrobbles: 124

A lot easier to get into if you don't regard 'Good Kid' and 'To Pimp' as faultless masterpieces and get all het up over Kendrick slipping - patchy at times but as enjoyable as anything else he's released if you relax into it.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 39th
19Alex G
God Save The Animals

Scrobbles: 119

Not quite perfect but it might still be the Alex G I've bonded with the most so far - could be his best? Not sure, it's a close thing.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 19th

Top 30 song of the year: Forgive
20Daniel Avery
Ultra Truth

Scrobbles: 119

A few lesser moments but when this hits it really takes you somewhere....his best!

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 22nd
21Bob Vylan
Bob Vylan Presents The Price Of Life

Scrobbles: 118

Another Doof guilty pleasure?...but wait this actually grew on me a lot to the point it DID make my top 100 for the year. Occasionally ham fisted but it gets by on energy and the aggro.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 70th
22MJ Lenderman
Boat Songs

Scrobbles: 117

Boney backed new music in 2022 - 'Boat Songs' were the GOAT songs if you're into alt country/americana with a strong Molina crush.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 13th

Top 30 song of the year: Tastes Just Like it Costs
23Black Midi
Hellfire

Scrobbles: 116

Wildly ambitious 'Crimson at the carnival' shenanigans - Side A trumps Side B...but if both halves of this had been as strong as the first we'd have had an album of the year contender. As is, it's very good - still room for improvement. Their best so far!

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 14th

Song of the year: Welcome to Hell
24Suede
Autofiction

Scrobbles: 114

Biggest surprise of the year - I (famously?) don't get on too well with '90s edition Suede....but this darker, more punk/post punk/raw n' rawk informed set really hits the spot. Their best!

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 16th

Top 30 song of the year: That Boy on the Stage
25THUMPER (IRE)
D e l u s i o n s o f G r a n d e u r

Scrobbles: 113

Big soft spot for this one, my debut of the year - it'll get roped in as a post-punk album but in reality it's at least equally '90s referencin' alt rock (especially The Wildhearts, maybe Baby Chaos).

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 8th

Top 30 song of the year: 25
26Current Value
Platinum Scatter

Scrobbles: 110

Often when you describe an electronic album as sounding like a 'soundtrack' that can be read as 'it has a consistent atmosphere but ends up a bit unengaging' - not so here, this has a soundtrack feel but maintains this otherworldy vibe and boasts real dynamic range. It keeps you hooked throughout.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 11th
27Tamino
Sahar

Scrobbles: 110

One of my favourite 'new discoveries' of 2022, Tamino's vocals really channel Jeff Buckley but there's more to it all than that - this album employs some well judged restraint and boasts an understated soulful appeal.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 6th

Top 30 song of the year: You Don't Own Me
28Honey Harper
Honey Harper and the Infinite Sky

Scrobbles: 105

He's back and he means business - a few teething issues as, uh, Honey, tries to broaden his song writing range but the whole thing hangs together surprisingly well.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 25th
29Half Man Half Biscuit
The Voltarol Years

Scrobbles: 104

The usual wit on display, usually directed here towards those courting the fickle finger of 'internet fame' - whether you were hanging off the coattails of Covid or you want to be the next LadBaby...well, you're in for a bruising here.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 54th
30Florist
Florist

Scrobbles: 103

Sometimes I don't like a band reverting to a self titled when it's not their debut but here it feels appropriate - this seems like the final blueprint to her style.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 27th
31Megadeth
The Sick, the Dying... and the Dead!

Scrobbles: 102

A middle ranking Megadeth album still gets a few airings in the Doof household - not a lot to split this one from 'Dystopia'...this is maybe more consistent, less highs?

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: didn't qualify
32Shearwater
The Great Awakening

Scrobbles: 98

In a less overall incredible year for releases this might have got even more praise and attention from me but it got a little lost in the shuffle of 2022 - there's a strong case this ranks in their top 3 releases and is a welcome return to something close to the 'Rook'/'Golden Archipelago' style.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 24th
33Machine Head
Of Kingdom and Crown

Scrobbles: 97

In the battle of the old time'r metal releases of 2022 I'd place this a little aheads of the Megadeth - might even make a top 5 Machine Head albums when it catches me right.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: didn't qualify
34The Smile
A Light For Attracting Attention

Scrobbles: 93

How to release something worthy yet at the same time ever so slightly disappointing: a case study.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 35th
35Kurt Vile
Watch My Moves

Scrobbles: 90

It's split opinion but I for one am happy that Kurt's mixed up the formula here...and man, he's never sounded quite THIS baked before.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 42nd

Top 30 song of the year: Mount Airy Hill
36Damien Jurado
Reggae Film Star

Scrobbles: 84

One of those song writing dudes you feel has given up in terms of making any sort of major statement or having a huge impact on any sort of sizeable audience...but also this is decent if a little slight. If you've liked his stuff before this is worthwhile.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 52nd
37Quadeca
I Didn't Mean to Haunt You

Scrobbles: 84

Like a more emo version of last year's Lil Ugly Mane maybe? This grows on you, he shows glimpses of a Sufjan level ear for vocal melodies and the production is enveloping in its watery gloom.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 32nd
38Weyes Blood
And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow

Scrobbles: 83

She's still landed on a verrrr pretty somewhat trad sound...it's a little less memorable than the previous album.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 63rd
39The Unthanks
Sorrows Away

Scrobbles: 82

Strong return with the usual trad folk vocals - but a more fleshed out backing than what we've come to expect. Until the invention of a time machine this album will do the job to taking us back to a more simple recent past for now. 'The Sandgate Dangling Song' is especially bleak and affecting, check it if nothing else.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 21st

Top 30 song of the year: The Sandgate Dangling Song
40Friendship
Love the Stranger

Scrobbles: 79

Another alt country rec from Boney and a band to keep an eye on - they can record a better album than their first two.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 89th
41The Afghan Whigs
How Do You Burn?

Scrobbles: 79

Maybe their best release since they made their comeback.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 67th
42Leftfield
This Is What We Do

Scrobbles: 79

Some snoozy moments to navigate on this late career return and I do wonder if to combat this they should've made room for more vocal contributions here, considering that 'Rapture 16' (featuring Earl 16) and particularly 'Full Way Round' with Fontaine D.C's Grian Chatten are obvious highlights. Still, there's a lot more good than bad here so great.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 97th

Top 30 song of the year: Full Way Round
43Jamie T
The Theory of Whatever

Scrobbles: 78

Along with the Josh Rouse from this year I guess this is the album that people would say 'why?' - why spend so long with an album that's patently such a middle hitter? Well, you just have those artists you have that loyalty to and you always enjoy hearing from...even if they never really amaze you.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: didn't qualify
44Smidley
Here Comes The Devil

Scrobbles: 78

Never been a huge fan of Foxing but this eccentric indie pop/rock definitely has something going on - and 'In Poor Taste' is one of the catchiest tracks of 2022 in any genre.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 61st

Top 30 song of the year: In Poor Taste
45Brian Eno
Foreverandevernomore

Scrobbles: 77

Brian's apocalypse is a slow and sad one with a distinct lack of Hollywood pyrotechnics.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 31st
46Walt Disco
Unlearning

Scrobbles: 77

Still not sure what I am supposed to have unlearned from listening to this, after many many listens I'm still parked on the fence. They are surely channeling prime Bowie and, uh, Klaus Nomi? The most flamboyant debut album since the Wild Beasts one back in 2008 - though this one doesn't feel as successful an opening gambit. Hey, I'm still talking about this album in December so job done maybe :/

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: didn't qualify

Top 30 song of the year: Be An Actor
47Black Country, New Road
Ants From Up There

Scrobbles: 74

Uh oh, the biggie, the daddy, the 'critical consensus best album of 2022'...{gulp}...yeah, I didn't like it so much. Instrumentals still too musty and dry too often and the vocals/lyrics ---while improved on since the debut--- are still a slight negative rather than a force for positive for me. Sometimes too twee, others too bloodless (you want blood you head for the Black Midi I guess), there IS an indie appeal here at times and certainly I like maybe four of the songs a decent amount...but overall a bit of a slog.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: didn't qualify
48Tommy McLain
I Ran Down Every Dream

Scrobbles: 74

This rec from anat proved to be one of the growers of the year, this Santa Clause lookin' old timer brought the vibes.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 66th
49Danger Mouse and Black Thought
Cheat Codes

Scrobbles: 71

Quality pairing here, Black Thought rolls back the years and this ends up 2nd only to the Nas album for hip hop in 2022.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 34th
50Arcade Fire
WE

Scrobbles: 70

Their best album in a minute...that's not saying much. They do break through the cringe ceiling (basement?) quite a lot and there's just a feeling this is missing a lot of the compositional and emotional complexity of yore. A bit...by the numbers?

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: didn't qualify
51Bonny Light Horseman
Rolling Golden Holy

Scrobbles: 70

Sort of MOR indie folk from a 'supergroup' that really stretches that definition - this is the sort of fluff I have a weakness for, so it gets a lot of listens and a qualifying spot. Predictable.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 92nd
52The Order Of The 12
Lore of the Land

Scrobbles: 70

Light touch psychedelic folk album with subtly unique female vocals - just one of those albums you reach for more than you'd first expect.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 56th
53Willi Carlisle
Peculiar, Missouri

Scrobbles: 70

Feels authentic but also finds space to have some Bright Eyes type alt country/folk touches too - and as is essential with high quality country music....great singing great lyrics!

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 28th

Top 30 song of the year: Tulsa's Last Magician
54Perfume Genius
Ugly Season

Scrobbles: 69

Actually one of the biggest changes in direction releases of the year - this more experimental approach could have fallen flat...but quite the opposite. His best!

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 18th
55Gold Panda
The Work

Scrobbles: 68

Goes into new age chillout territory on occasion but to no detriment, this is the relaxing background electronic album of the year.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 57th
56The Orielles
Tableau

Scrobbles: 68

What top 100 albums of the year list is complete without an obscure SandwichBubble rec? Threatens to evaporate at times but overall I'm going with: a blissful listen.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 76th
57Warhaus
Ha Ha Heartbreak

Scrobbles: 67

Most years there's usually a user here or on another site who tends to massively influence what I listen to that year - this year it's Lucman. We branched off from listening to a lot of The Church at the same sort of time to then recommending a lot to each other - this solo outing from the lead singer of Balthazar hit the mark, it's some slinky/smooth chamber pop with soul tones.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 58th
58Craig Finn
A Legacy Of Rentals

Scrobbles: 66

You got the feeling Finn was up against a legacy of better previous solo albums but this was still decent - no song inside my top 30 sort of tells the story too.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 45th
59David John Morris
Wyld Love Songs

Scrobbles: 66

The definition of non essential but I find his quasi spiritual ramblings soothing.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 64th
60Josh Rouse
Going Places

Scrobbles: 65

It's a Josh Rouse album in 2022 - despite that fact, I still listened to it a lot. Then I kept trying real hard to remember any of it in between listens.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: didn't qualify
61The Garden
Horseshit On Route 66

Scrobbles: 65

One of those bands that are just likeable and you don't need to take what they're doing too seriously - this more punk sounding/haunted house themed album, uh, worked for me. Short n' sweet.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 65th
62Will Sheff
Nothing Special

Scrobbles: 65

Just an enjoyable easy listen from the Okkervil River frontman - it might not be that special but it would still probably rank as a top four Okkervil River release for me.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 74th
63Skullcrusher
Quiet the Room

Scrobbles: 64

Nice rambling lo-fi indie set with female vox, didn't impress me quite as much as the Florist album.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 55th
64Animal Collective
Time Skiffs

Scrobbles: 63

Probably a case of a band making an acceptable comeback album JUST when the well of goodwill has run completely dry. This is alright but no one has any time for it - I had SOME time for it.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 71st
65John Moreland
Birds In The Ceiling

Scrobbles: 63

Slight departure here, he's added a Justin Vernon influence into this mellow/electro-kissed set and it really fits that husky voice. Noice.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 69th
66Beth Orton
Weather Alive

Scrobbles: 62

Has to be one of the biggest surprises of the year because before listening to this album I had Beth pegged as a pretty dull singer from back in the '90s - but this collection really has atmosphere and spirit. Haunting at times.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 40th
67Daniel Spaleniak
Tape V

Scrobbles: 62

A few Anat recs in my top 100, this moody and sometimes gothic country/folk rock certainly was well within my wheelhouse.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 88th
68Esoctrilihum
Consecration of the Spiritus Flesh

Scrobbles: 61

Boring, Esoctrilihum get my metal album of the year vote yet again, this is his harshest album yet - check the drums. His best? Maybe.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 26th
69Korn
Requiem

Scrobbles: 61

Not awful, still too reliant on boring choruses, average really...but I tried to get into it.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: didn't qualify
70Rachika Nayar
Heaven Come Crashing

Scrobbles: 61

Distinct lack of ‘post-rock’ elsewhere in this list but this cinematic opus from Rachika Nayar goes some way to address that, even if it could be argued this is equally as much an ‘electronic album’ at heart. In places this calls to mind the bright guitar explorations of The Durutti Column (which was a surprise), at others there’s a Sigur Ros ‘( )’ feel perhaps, and at its most electronic focused I’m reminded of the expansive emotional drive of BT’s essential ‘This Binary Universe’.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 30th
71Duke Garwood
Rogues Gospel

Scrobbles: 60

Experimental blues isn't a genre I've delved into too much but this album worked it's magic over time - the song dedicated to the late Mark Lanegan that closes this set is a nice touch too.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 62nd
72Fear Factory
Recoded

Scrobbles: 59

Of all the dubious gym soundtrack guilty pleasures this is certainly one if not the king in 2022 - I maintain there are four entertaining remixes here, the rest is for the bin. Still, I'd probably have rated a four song EP of the best here higher then the parent album so there's that.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: didn't qualify
73Show Me The Body
Trouble The Water

Scrobbles: 58

Pleasantly ferocious.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 68th
74Andrew Wasylyk
Hearing the Water Before Seeing the Falls

Scrobbles: 57

Just an evocative n' reflective album of 'chamber jazz' with some melancholic 'lockdown' undertones.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 33rd
75Shannen Moser
The Sun Still Seems to Move

Scrobbles: 57

A minor improvement from last time and a really enjoyable, uh, 'sweet' listen - not a lot more to say.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 60th
76Ethel Cain
Preacher's Daughter

Scrobbles: 55

Again, because of the buzz I persevered with this one and sure, it has some moments that connect - overall just too much on here that gives me next to nothing. I don't think the emotion translates for me and I think it's one you need that maybe.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: didn't qualify
77King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard
Omnium Gatherum

Scrobbles: 55

Was this a particularly annoying year from KG&tLW or was it my imagination they released another five or six albums? Well, this is the one I did listen to a bit - hate to say it was pretty excellent, esp the opener.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 51st

Top 30 song of the year: The Dripping Tap
78Gilla Band
Most Normal

Scrobbles: 54

The name change hasn't held them back, they're still peddling an addictive brand of noise rock that's also quite accessible. Sometimes.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 47th
79Spencer Krug
Twenty Twenty Twenty Twenty One

Scrobbles: 54

I wouldn't go as far as to label myself a Krug fanboy and he definitely has dropped stuff that tests my patience to the limit but I have a bit of loyalty there - good news is I liked this solo one a fair amount. Weird stuff from someone who must be a genuine eccentric - no one else could keep releasing this type of material year on year.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 59th
80Viagra Boys
Cave World

Scrobbles: 54

Overall this is just about their best album but still it isn't quite as consistent as you want it to be. Still branding them the spiritual successors to The Stranglers, which I like.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 46th

Top 30 song of the year: Baby Criminal
81Andrew Bird
Inside Problems

Scrobbles: 53

Quietly impressive work from a singer songwriter who seems to be no one's all time favourite - but he's respected by most all the same. A middle-hitter in his discog too....so we're looking at a middle-hitter from a middle-hitter? The album's better than that makes it sound, truly.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 75th
82Courting
Guitar Music

Scrobbles: 53

One of the catchiest albums of the year and certainly one of the best debut albums of the year (the one thing you can hit 2022 with is it was light on truly amazing debut albums).

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 72nd
83Daniel Rossen
You Belong There

Scrobbles: 52

Very solid solo release from the Grizzly Bear member...it sounds almost exactly like one half of GB though. Not a bad thing mind.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 36th
84Noisia
Closer

Scrobbles: 52

Decent farewell release from Noisia that worked ok as gym soundtrack material.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: didn't qualify
85alt-J
The Dream

Scrobbles: 51

My favourite alt-J album because I really didn't get much from them before - about half of this I really like...the other half not so much, but this definitely commanded a fair few listens.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: didn't qualify
86Coldworld
Isolation

Scrobbles: 51

The weather outside is frightful, but this post-rock /atmospheric black metal is so delightful.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 99th
87Melt Yourself Down
Pray for Me I Don't Fit In

Scrobbles: 51

Yet another Anat rec, jazzy and afrobeat influences in a post-punk sort of setting. Should have revisited this second half of the year!

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 90th
88Simone Felice
All The Bright Coins

Scrobbles: 51

Woah, how do fellow boomer! Unmistakably cringe in places but I can't help but like it anyway, his uh, 'beat poetry' seems like it comes from a cool enough place - not enough to break into my top 100 of the year though. Also, whenever I start getting misty eyed in some pro '90s diatribe here please feel free to imagine my voice as that of Felice's 'just one ham short of Shatner' quasi profound patter.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: didn't qualify
89Placebo
Never Let Me Go

Scrobbles: 49

I guess a moderate return to form but this didn't blow me away despite returning to it a fair few times.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: didn't qualify
90The Lounge Society
Tired of Liberty

Scrobbles: 48

Another post-punk band showing some promise on their debut.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 73rd
91Drive-By Truckers
Welcome 2 Club XIII

Scrobbles: 46

Maybe suffering from releasing so much material over such a short space of time, I could have given this more attention, but it's definitely one of their better recent offerings.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 53rd
92Witch Fever
Congregation

Scrobbles: 45

Really noisy gurl rock/metal - not totally sure there's a huge lot going on behind the noise beyond this album boasting three or so absolute thumpers of songs. Promising debut all the same, sometimes the right noise is enough.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 79th
93Denzel Curry
Melt My Eyez See Your Future

Scrobbles: 44

As with most Denzel material I get left sitting on the fence with it - half the time I feel it's 4 worthy...others 3. One thing is certain.....I listen to a lot of Denzel Curry trying to make up my mind.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: didn't qualify
94Joe Rainey
Niineta

Scrobbles: 44

If you're looking for something totally different then Rainey's industrial tinged native American powwow music could be just that. Possibly.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 44th
95Nathan Salsburg
Landwerk No. 3

Scrobbles: 44

I really respect the approach here - turntable samples employed in a 'The Caretaker' fashion, then coupled with Salsburg’s own guitar playing. He calls it 'collaborating with ghosts' and that's pretty much how it comes across, background music with a difference.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 43rd
96Ian Noe
River Fools and Mountain Saints

Scrobbles: 43

As usual with Noe we have some solid Dylan indebted folk/country - if that sounds like your thing you won't go too wrong with this.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 48th
97Melody's Echo Chamber
Emotional Eternal

Scrobbles: 43

A more airy and accessible effort that ok I maybe rate a bit below the previous one.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 93rd
98Tyler Childers
Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven?

Scrobbles: 43

Not sure anyone needed three different recordings of the same songs applying different styles...but the songs themselves are very good so no sweat.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 77th

Top 30 song of the year: Heart You Been Tendin'
99Breathless
See Those Colours Fly

Scrobbles: 42

No one is going to make a case for this being their finest hour but as low key and understated comebacks albums go it's well worth heading to for fans.

Actual Position in my 2022 Top 100: 78th
100Benjamin Clementine
And I Have Been

Scrobbles: 42

A step away from what I most liked about his work on the previous album and a return to more the precocious stage school luvvie style of the debut - a disappointment but no disaster.
