12.11.21 | I've got 6 in my Top 10, and Bruit not far off it. |
troisdouzemerde
12.11.21 | 47 and 30 are really great and I didn't expect to see them on any lists. |
Atari
12.11.21 | nice list! cool to see 12 and 16 so high. never heard 1 so I'll check it out |
bgillesp
12.11.21 | What kind of music is 1? Its got no genre tags |
robertsona
12.11.21 | really is crazy to see water from your eyes on a sput list lol, though I've iterated that before. good stuff, havent heard much on here but I havent heard much on any 2021 list |
anat
12.11.21 | tough old year for albums but the lesser output was to be expected what with all that's going on
nice to see 57, 61 - 81 i had no clue about so will pop that on the catch up list
and as ever thanks for your support with regards to my own stuff, appreciate its inclusion to begin with but made up with its position |
anat
12.11.21 | @robertsona wait til you see my list ;-) |
DoofDoof
12.11.21 | anat - you did a great job with that album, if you improve as much with the third album the sky is the limit :) |
DoofDoof
12.11.21 | so yeah, a ramble but that was my 2021 |
DoofDoof
12.11.21 | bgillesp - is artrock I guess, with a strong jazz influence to the drumming
thanks for all the replies |
tectactoe
12.11.21 | Nice list - love that 46 and 76 made the cut. Congrats again on becoming a daddy!! |
Trifolium
12.11.21 | Oh nice there are cool ones here Doof! |
DoofDoof
12.11.21 | tect - thanks, 46 did fall a bit down my ranking but for a certain mood it is perfect...actually that is also a good description for the appeal of 76 |
NorthernSkylark
12.11.21 | Sweet list Doof. We have a lot of 2021 albums in common! (as expected) And still there’s a LOT of stuff here that I either need to revisit or maybe check out. I’m pretty burned out after listening to a ton of 2021 stuff rec, but I might give 19 and 88 a chance. |
DoofDoof
12.11.21 | Lark - definitely give 19 a few spins, think I slightly prefer it to their first one.
There's also a Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and Bill Callahan collaboration that's just come out this week but I've only spun it once so far, it could yet make the cut for top 100 so that might be worth trying out too. |
Atari
12.11.21 | oh shit, huge congrats on becoming a father!! definitely changes your life and I can relate to a lot of what you shared |
DoofDoof
12.11.21 | thanks Atari, yeah it feels good to unload some of this stuff here too |
NorthernSkylark
12.11.21 | Damn I didn’t know about that one. I’m on it tomorrow. Thanks. |
DoofDoof
12.11.21 | Ah, reading up about it now and I didn't realise it's all cover versions - still, a lot of it sounded good so no biggie |
BlondeGuardian
12.11.21 | I genuinely enjoyed reading your blog post about becoming a father. |
DoofDoof
12.11.21 | Thanks BG, yeah I didn't want to bore people too much and ramble for ages but honestly I hoped some people would relate or it would make them fear the idea of parenting less maybe, whilst still being honest that it is intense. |
bgillesp
12.11.21 | Jamming 1 now. Is v gud |
Divaman
12.12.21 | Very cool parenting blog, Doof. |

12.12.21 | ‘Late’ fatherhood and an online gambling addiction is the new life begins at 40.
Well done Doof mate, hope you and family are all well.
|
DoofDoof
12.12.21 | Cheers Diva and Zak
As always Zak I’m a living breathing stereotype :D
Family are good, baby will be walking soon, she was the average height for a one year old girl at 9 months so she’s a bit of a mini version of me. Going to be tall…long way to fall. |
DDDeftoneDDD
12.12.21 | Lol awesome you re on to it already mate
I skimmed throught this and can t help but to think I should jam a few before I make mine, like esocthirll or that Simz f.e. but you know, fuck it, year never ends anyway.
I see you dug Pernadas (I m more into his early ones), have you checked badbadnotgood s latest? |
DoofDoof
12.12.21 | Triple D - yeah, the BadBad I liked, that could have made the list I just only listened to it once. The new Pernadas I think is about the same quality as his best early stuff, the instrumental more jazz stuff he put out I rate as a little weaker though. I dig his style though. |
DoofDoof
12.12.21 | Also put up some random likes and dislikes from my year at the bottom of the list now. |
DDDeftoneDDD
12.12.21 | Oh and congrats for the fatherhood! Its awesome man |
Dewinged
12.12.21 | Can say I'm definitely there with you in 80% of your parenthood woes. It's a strangely rewarding day by day routine meets thrill meets stress meets life epiphanies but my girl just started walking around 3 days ago at 1 year 3 months and it almost brought me to tears.
As always, great selection doofus, hope all is well. |
DoofDoof
12.12.21 | Dewi I didn’t even realise you were a dad now, very late congrats on that - some stuff brings you to tears, some creases you up unlike anything, can be so funny |
DDDeftoneDDD
12.12.21 | Dudes. Mine is 2 and half and it only got better and tougher. So fun since she started walk and talk lol. I m just enjoying the fullest cause I know someday it will stop being this fun. |
Sunnyvale
12.12.21 | Nice list Doof! Plenty of overlap, as might be expected. Personal notes were also interesting to read, congrats on fatherhood! |
zakalwe
12.12.21 | Album of the year is the sniffers for me.
I really enjoyed Dune as well, loved it. |
JohnnyoftheWell
12.12.21 | did not anticipate you enjoying the wheel of time tv show |
rabidfish
12.12.21 | babies are fun to observe, but i still find it scary to become a parent. how the f am i supposed to mold this goblin into a decent, smart human being that doesn't hurt other people for fun and doesn't get scammed into NFTs. |
DoofDoof
12.12.21 | Cheers Sunnyvale, what were your favourites from this list? |
DoofDoof
12.12.21 | Triple D - I was unaware you’re a dad too, yeah my mum was saying best part is aged 2-3, just miniature little people at that point
Johnny - obviously haven’t finished it yet, and it’s very derivative of LOTR/GoT/etc - but it just hits the spot right now
Zak - I 100% anticipated you sticking to Amyl as your top album of 2021, it’s right up there for me too, be interesting if they can top it with the next one :/
Wasn’t sure you’d embrace the Dune adaptation, definitely of the five films I’ve watched in the cinema this year it was by far my favourite |
Sunnyvale
12.12.21 | 5 and 11 will certainly make my top 10, with 16, 21, and 26 not far behind. In general, I've heard close to half the albums on here and like pretty much every one of them, even if not all will make my list. |
JohnnyoftheWell
12.12.21 | would disagree that it's derivative of GoT tbh and not just bc the source material is older; think the way violence, gender and sexual politics are handled is radically different and mostly more refined, if less titillating. LOTR politics are ofc plentiful. shaky start, but the characters and world building are mostly there by now - excited to see how they round off the season |
GhandhiLion
12.12.21 | "South Park’s PC Baby episodes" |
parksungjoon
12.12.21 | >think the way violence, gender and sexual politics are handled is radically different and mostly more refined
wheel of time ? |
DDDeftoneDDD
12.12.21 | @rabbid I did practically nothing and she s smart af allready lol dad at 36 and I felt a little late, imo the sooner the better, after, lets say, 27.
Agreed so far doof. I don t think I will have the patience for teens agr tho lol |
DDDeftoneDDD
12.12.21 | If I dig Leon III, will I enjoy 5? |
Gyromania
12.12.21 | I just discovered glow on recently and it's been very quickly rising in the ranks of my best of 2021. I need to hear some of these before I make my year end list. Especially Gas, can't believe I haven't listened to that yet
I too enjoyed South Korean Netflix shows and I'm very much liking the wheel of time show atm. It lacks the big budget of a show like GoT, but it's noticeably much better than the witcher. |
rabidfish
12.12.21 | My monkey brain tells me that i can't be a father if I can't kill people with my bear hands, i gotta hit the gym back again, fr |
DoofDoof
12.12.21 | DDD - 5 is very different to Leon III, it’s more traditional alt country/folk, still worth checking I’d say
Gyro - agreed The Witcher had some of the cheapest looking production going, it needed a lot of work I thought, maybe season 2 will fix that |
DoofDoof
12.12.21 | Ghandi - I’m really surprised anyone tried to ‘cancel’ South Park and you just knew their response would be swift and devastating
Also props to them for calling out the China blind spot right now - even if their jokes about China aren’t actually all that funny in and of themselves
Generally most of the new episodes are poor, but the pandemic special had its moments |
GhandhiLion
12.12.21 | Who tried to cancel south park? South park politics are cringe af but I doubt they've done anything to warrant a cancelation attempt recently. |
zakalwe
12.12.21 | David John Morris? Monastic Love Songs??
Sexual Healing as sung by Mother Wendy Beckett. |
DoofDoof
12.12.21 | Mr Lover lover they call me Mr Monastic mmmm mmmm
Solo album by the Red River Dialect frontman after spending a year effectively living as a monk, it rips |
DoofDoof
12.12.21 | Ghandi - yes, I preferred the less ‘current affairs’ focused South Park, I hadn’t watched it in years |
zakalwe
12.12.21 | Ha. Would you believe it, it’s lovely.
Nice bit of Sunday listening. |
theBoneyKing
12.12.21 | Great list as always Doof! Maybe a bit less overlap than usual for us though?
Neat you’re enjoying Wheel of Time. I’m a longtime fan of the books so cool that non-readers are liking it. :D |
DDDeftoneDDD
12.12.21 | Perhaps I check that one.
Wtf bois, I really dug Witcher, I actually played witcher3 along with the series and it was particularly rewarding. Although I don t feel the series with low production, I def see they could ve invested more on monsters etc...which is the story basis |
DoofDoof
12.12.21 | Boney - I don’t know, there’s still quite a lot of overlap, I thought you’d approve of 16 ranking in the top 20? I guess there wasn’t really a big indie rock release like Arcade Fire or The National this year though
How old are the books? My buddy who recommended the show said they’re held up quite seriously in fantasy genre circles but I presumed they were still quite recent |
theBoneyKing
12.12.21 | Yeah you’re right about the overlap I guess there just isn’t a big consensus pick for this year like you say. War on Drugs is kind of it I guess but even then I didn’t fall for that as much as I wanted to. Was 3 a late find for you? I remember seeing it here a bit earlier in the year but don’t know much about it.
The books were released from 1990-2013 (so actually predate GoT - though the show is certainly responding to/influenced by GoT in some ways; ironically the GoT books were themselves more a response to the era that WoT was kind of the end of). I got on them a couple years before the last one came out and they were pretty formative for me as they were the first “adult” fantasy books I read outside of LOTR. It’s kind of a controversial series, it’s a big investment and there’s kind of a wide range of quality across the books. Those who love it really love it and those who hate it really hate it. |
DoofDoof
12.12.21 | 3 was a very late find but maybe my favourite post rock album of the last 5+ years - usually the genre bores me a bit have to admit
This album has something though |
DoofDoof
12.12.21 | I haven’t really connected on a massively deep level with Wheel of Time yet and I might not rate the last few eps but so far I’m enjoying. I’ll look up the controversy surrounding it all and read the reviews of the series once it’s done - I’m guessing Den of Geek is covering it? |
theBoneyKing
12.12.21 | Interesting re: 3. Can’t say I have a huge appetite for post-rock these days either but I may give it a spin before EOY.
Makes sense you haven’t connected with WoT too much yet. The biggest draw of the books I’d say is the depth of the worldbuilding and so far the show hasn’t dug into that too much yet (which makes sense as the books take more time to develop that aspect as well). |
Demon of the Fall
12.13.21 | Tropical Fudge is my #1 (out of the pathetically small no. of releases I've gotten around to checking).
Nice varied list as per usual Doofy.
Good to hear about the family and the fact you managed to overcome the gambling thing... seems way too easy to get sucked into that shit nowadays. So accessible/readily available 24/7. |
DoofDoof
12.13.21 | Thanks Demon, the TFS was a little overlooked by people I think.
Yeah, as everyone here knows I’m very obsessive/compulsive with this hobby and it’s the same with others so not a good match with online gambling. Watching the Paul Merson documentary about online sports betting sites that came out about a month after I’d stopped was interesting, a real expose on how it all works. I was never in big trouble with it but I was just pleased I was no longer giving any money to that industry. |
fogza
12.13.21 | WoT is more straight fantasy than GoT, i read a few books and then gave up. The series is ok so far but the Witcher is far better. |
DoofDoof
12.13.21 | I dunno, The Witcher felt like a bit of a missed opportunity and the Ciri plot/scenes were sometimes a bit uneventful.
Plus as mentioned above...not enough monster action.
On the plus side, the actress who played Yennefer really nailed that role, definite soft spot there |
fogza
12.14.21 | Had a listen to your #1 and it is excellent |
Veldin
12.14.21 | Doof, a brand you can trust. Excellent list. Lots of similar albums compared to my upcoming top 100. Cheers! |
DoofDoof
12.14.21 | fogza - glad you liked it, just felt despite all the variety in styles it was the most consistent album this year.
Veldin - thanks, will look out for your list |
Veldin
12.15.21 | So glad I check your #1. Absolutely loving it. Scratches that neverending Bad Seeds itch |
DoofDoof
12.15.21 | Nice, I don’t think I’ve ever picked an album of the year before that:
1. So few people have listened to yet
2. They actually like a lot when they do try it |
Demon of the Fall
12.15.21 | guessing Turnstile is essential then? I've been slacking |
DoofDoof
12.15.21 | Can’t imagine 2021 without that album Demon |
Nrap
12.18.21 | the reliable list. diggin the felice bros and arab strap. turnstile is much fun |
SitarHero
12.18.21 | I could have sworn you already had a couple of dooflets, but congratulations on fatherhood and glad it's agreeing with ya. |
DoofDoof
12.21.21 | Thanks Nrap for the stamp of approval :)
Appreciated SitarH |
