Round 6: Sharkattacks Continental Rec Tournament

For the the final round we stop by my hometown of North America. I’ve had a fun journey exploring all these different sounds and cultures but now I want to immerse myself into something more familiar.
1The Stooges
The Stooges

Could’ve picked a million things for this rounds hint but I don’t know. I don’t want to confuse you. Go with your gut that’s what I did.

.1 HANDICAP USED

The definition of a grower. I was feeling pretty meh the first 2-3 listens. Over time though I have grown quite fond of this here record. It is melodic one second and noisy the next. The song structures are also very wild and unpredictable but flow is still undeniable. Each song ebbs right into another flawlessly. The variation is also insane. Some parts are brittle and beautiful while others are harsh and cacophonous. Stylistically it isn’t really my thing hence the lukewarm first impression. It gets better with each listen and makes me not only want to check out other albums from this project, but electronic music in general. I haven’t heard an electronic (I think that’s what this is?) album this good and with this much personality before. After listening to this album about 15 times or so it has rose the ranks pretty quickly. It definitely has carved out a spot into my regular listening.

.1 HANDICAP USED

This is much closer to the hint. The sound is much more art-punk or something. Actually the sound is hard to define. It is aggressive and abrasive but there is a lots of sax and xylophones. Instead of making this sound like a disjointed mess it adds lots of character to this record. There is a certain aura of intellectualism around this album but it doesn’t come off as pretentious or too much. It’s smart artsy people making jazz-punk... his could I not love this?! The lyrics are amazing and catchy. Most of the choruses have a super sticky sing along part. The album dips it’s toes in rockabilly, goth, punk, jazz, and pop. It all sounds pretty great together. The production is a little bit or miss but it isn’t too glossy or anything. The musianship doesn’t exactly show off but the songs are superbly written. I love the snotty and sassy vocals.

4.4 +.1=4.5
