This record puts a large emphasis on mood and atmosphere. There aren’t many if any curveballs thrown on this record. It’s full of reverb-soaked music and vocals that create beautiful soundscapes for pretty female vocals to harmonize over. The keyboard player adds a lot of subtle but effective little sounds and embellishments to further move the music. Little sustained piano touches or a synthesized string line help this band achieve their goal of making a sort of homogeneous sound. The simple song structures, while a little unadventurous keep the theme for this record on point. It’s good for what it is, a soothing relaxing little French record with nice innocuous music. Not really my thing but I think they did a good job realizing what they wanted to achieve.

I’ll be honest... I don’t really understand this band. To me me they either sound like a pop band trying to go “weird” or an experimental band looking to go commercial. I’m not sure if they really succeed one way or another. I do really love all the different instrumentation on this like the strings, woodblock, etc. These unpredictable sounds help this record become better than it actually is. The band is mostly a tight outfit and the drummer usually plays upbeat. They still don’t do more than mid-tempo pop rock though. What brings this record down the most for me is the bad vocals and weak songwriting here. Besides the opener nothing really stands out on this. Although the bands performance saves a lot of this record, they can’t save it from elimination.

This is how I like my post-punk: spidery guitars, throbbing bass, danceable drums, and detached vocals. This has all of that and then some. The ominous intro sets the mood quite well but this record is mostly a barnburner. At times they sound ferocious on this thing. Not a single bad track can be found here.

I was on tour awhile ago driving through some desert land in California. Someone in the band put on a record by a band a band called Kleenex. Coming out the soon-to-be-broken-down vans shitty speakers was some great music. Fractured songs, post-punk style, and a very welcome fun-loving attitude. Unsurprisingly Kleenex got sued and had to change their name. Apparently they changed it to Liliput! No wonder these songs sounded so familiar! Anyways what you get is a ametourish lady’s playing minimalistic music. The childish unprofessional type shit here is actually more charismatic than detrimental. Sometimes they dio their toes in funk or dub or other weird music but it always sounds like this band. Great record. Although I probably technically already heard this I couldn’t remember how any of the songs went or anything and I didn’t realize til like halfway through my first listen.

This took a few listens. This band sounds very sophisticated and serious but which a slight sense of paranoia or nervousness attached to it. Almost sounds like a latter day Bad Seeds album if the Bad Seeds stayed good. The singer proves you don’t need to make words rhyme if they are good enough. Sounds like poetry, both lyrically and musically. The bass and drums take on a jazzy style for a large portion of this record while the guitar adds subtle nuances and minimal atmospheric playing. This band can get heavy when they want to they would just rather wear you down with audible seriousness. Production is amazing and perfect for this record. I’m into it but it seems like something I would only listen to when in this specific mood. Still I can’t deny the power that this has.

Didn’t like this at first. Thought it was a little too Joy Division-y for me. The singer doesn’t help that sentiment as he sounds like a slightly grittier Ian Curtis. The band saves it though as they plunder through huge songs that are as shifty as they are deadly serious. It’s goth/post-punk like most of this round but it takes a more jammy take on it at times. The songs are very long but can take to all sorts of different places before it’s over. It’s always drenched in darkness though. These guys don’t sound very happy but at least they got a decent record out of it. Really heavy record and a bit better than Joy Division in my opinion.

The Fall, The little bit I’ve heard have always been around a 3.5 for me. Lots of great stuff but nothing really hit me too hard. This one is different though. The singers ramblings are more vicious and frothy this time. The bass and drums are straight killing it. The guitar is always playing some off-kilter snarky/snakey riff. All of this sounds like greatness to me. The rhythm section is my favorite thing here as the pound and pummel those ear drums into insanity. This thing is dense as fuck. I’ve been listening to this one the most because how much there is to unpack here.

A little too fancy. A little too cocktail party for me. It sounds like a liberal arts professors favorite album. I dig a lot of the instruments and the various sounds. The singers voice sounds really cool too. But I don’t like the songs themselves. It’s too high-brow for me or something sorry. I’m not cultured enough to really dig this. It has some cool moments though.
