| Shirts and Skins
Scars from my childhood - recollections on PE class in the 1990's. | 1 | | dividedividedivide Denominator
First, my PE teacher would separate the boys from the girls, and the boys would go to a separate field to play sports. We would typically go out to the baseball or soccer field, and play kickball, soccer, and other such field-orientated games. Can't recall what and where the girls played... | 2 | | Silversun Pickups Let It Decay
Second, our PE teacher would then pick two jocks (dicks), usually from the same pool of dicks over and over again, to pick teams. Of course, they would pick their buddies first. So if you weren't in with or friends with these dicks, you would be relegated to the bottom of the pick list. What a shit popularity contest this was. Would have been so much easier to number people out (i.e., "1,2,1,2... or A,B,A,B...), or just say - you half go over there and this half over here. | 3 | | Hoobastank They Sure Don't Make Basketball Shorts Like They Used To
...this happened to me once playing basketball at a school outing - where I had just schooled these kids playing street ball. And then, once the team leaders got selected to pick, picks were made based on friends and popularity, and I was one of the last ones picked. Once again, I had just destroyed these fucks - what a sham. | 4 | | Rammstein Herzeleid
Third, instead of having jersees (as they do consistently in school nowadays), one team/approximately half of the boys in the PE class would have to take their shirts off. Good ole "Shirts and Skins". Now I wasn't a stud, but I wasn't hugely overweight either - just an average dude. But there were severely overweight boys in my PE class that had to be subjected to this weight shaming day in and day out. Just awful, and unbelievable and inexcusable now. | 5 | | Manowar The Triumph of Steel
Fourth, given the toxic masculinity of PE class (with just boys), a fight would break out about every damn day. These kids didn't get punished, suspended, or kicked out; TBH, it was repeat offenders most of the time. Our lame-ass PE teacher seemed to thrive on this shit and let it happen. | 6 | | Bully Feels Like
Fifth, PE class was a breeding ground for bullies. And the PE teacher turned a blind eye; gave no fucks. There was this one bully, we'll call him Matt Moron, who would bully me day in and out in PE class. Finally, one day, I had had it - and I chased this Moron down, jumped on his back, and drove him into the fucking ground. Needless to say, Moron didn't pick on me anymore...but unfortunately, likely placed his focus on someone else. | 7 | | Hatebreed Hatebreed
...did I mention that I hated my grade school! Not naming any names, but it was a private school in NW Georgia, USA. Mostly just a bunch of privileged, status-hungry tools... | |

03.08.24 | The PE teachers at my school fucked their female students or groomed them till they became legal and then fucked em. One had a year's long affair with another teacher, and when his daughter, who was going through chemo at the time found out, showed up at the school and publicly shamed him in front of everyone, which was super hilarious cause at that point he had somehow become principal lol. | JDubb
03.08.24 | @Trundle, that is classic! Similarly, our school had a football coach (will call him Mr. Blakher), who lived in the dorms - and groomed and fucked a blonde-haired dorm student. When found out, she got kicked out of school, and he lost his job/apartment and got put on a bus straight out of town. | Trundle
03.08.24 | One of the teachers I described started fucking a girl when she was at least 17 after teaching her since she was 15, when I started 8th grade at the school, just one year after the girl graduated, within the first two weeks we all heard the story, everyone in the school knew, and that definitely includes the teachers, but they covered it up for a staggering 17 years. And the only repercussions he has had since is a lifetime teaching ban(only in the province). His victim has filed a civil suit, and baffingly the guy still has gainful employment as the manager of a gym at a big hotel.
An insane amount of willful ignorance from the entire teaching staff, cause in my mind they totally aided him in getting away with it.
Oh, and the asshole literally drop kicked a soccer ball into my face from like 10 feet away when I was in 8th grade for no reason, probably should have said something, but I had a hard time believing telling the principal would accomplish anything. | JDubb
03.08.24 | @Trundle, that last note about a soccer ball in the face - that is the type of bullshit that some schools (like mine) would turn a blind eye to. The PE teacher/coach essentially has to do something egregious to be held accountable. I feel your rage at that... | Trundle
03.08.24 | Yeah, but now we're sput studs and the best they ever got was being a PE teacher.
The tables, they turned! | Butkuiss
03.09.24 | I don’t know you that well JDubb, but if you are still hung up on PE class from thirty years ago, may I gently suggest therapy? | JDubb
03.09.24 | @Butkuiss, noted. But unsure therapy can fix the events that form and harden us… Also, prob wouldn’t be a metal head, listening to Paradise Lost on gloomy days, wearing black, and putting together these lists on Sputnik if my formative years were all rosy. | chemicalmarriage
03.09.24 | In my pe class my gym teacher would strip us bare ass and make us play dodgeball. Winners had to play twister. Losers had to do bearcrawls. I cry every day | Beardog
03.09.24 | well, I'm glad I didn't have to sit through all this terrible shit. What a mess that school was (probably still is) from what I'm reading lol | JDubb
03.09.24 | @chemicalmarriage, LOL! That is classic... | JKing92
03.09.24 | This was quite a read. I had my own struggles as a closeted queer kid in gym class, but it was not... this. I'm sorry you head to deal with all of this. 😞 | JDubb
03.09.24 | @JKing92, thank you! As with many childhood experiences, didn’t really realize that these PE practices were improper conduct, shaming, and bullying until I got older. And from hearing others tell me they’re more proper PE practices. Just thought it was the way it was. | JDubb
03.09.24 | Interesting thread on this. “Uncomfortable” sums up being on the “skins” team as a young kid pretty well.https://prosportpsychsym.wordpress.com/2012/01/16/is-shirts-and-skins-outdated/ | artificialbox
03.09.24 | Holy shit, I used to love dividedividedivide so much. I had one of their t shirts and still have one of the band members added on facebook from way back in the day. he does illustration for adult swim now I think. | JDubb
03.10.24 | Next topic: communal showers in HS and my freshman college dorm; we had no dividers. Now that shit was real fun… | unclereich
03.11.24 | if we are sharing crazy high school stories I have some: | unclereich
03.21.24 | sorry jdubb forgot to add to this(these all have accompanying news articles if you are interested):
I went to an all boys catholic school that had an all girls school essentially on the same property. well one of the coaches (during my junior year) for the girl's jv basketball team was caught having a relationship with one of the girls on the team. I want to say the creep was 30 years old and had a family. Unfortunately, I cant recall what kind of trouble the guy got in, nor can I find the news article about it rn.
that same girls school was closed down my junior year and my all boys school became coed that same year, taking in the now school-less girls. this was a very well to do school mind you and a catholic school doesn't just randomly shut down. well I guess there was a sudden lack of funding and the guy who ran the financial side of the girls school killed himself a short while after the announcement of the school permanently shutting down.
one of the girls who went to that school died a few years ago in a plane crash. she was a grade below me and a really loverly person. it was very sad but very avoidable. here's the video about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKfM4PKPmvw
I was at a party the year after I graduated and one of my classmates unexpectedly showed up. he was a troubled and angry person and, try as he may, couldn't quite get his temper under control. though, in a party setting, he was usually fun to be around. on this night however, he was sitting quietly in the corner saying very little and looking aloof. I sat next to him and tried to spark a conversation but didn't really get anywhere. I looked down and noticed his fists were cut and bruised as though he had been in a fight with a wild animal. everyone asked why his hands looked that way but he never answered us. shortly thereafter we found out he beat a man to death only two nights prior. after servicing a year in prison and some probation, he got into a high speed chase and nearly hit a police office during the pursuit. after another slap on the wrist he stole a car earlier this year thus violating his parole. I don't think he's getting out for a while.
finally, this very high school burned down in 2017 during the tubbs fire which, at the time, was one of the most destructive fires in u.s. history.
