| Mushroomhead vs. Slipknot - Part 2 (2006 to 2022)
Two masked bands. Two storied 25+ year discographies. A fan-fueled feud. Not exactly pushing the same sound; but enough similar to warrant comparison. Here comes part 2 of the discography comparison. | | 1 |  | Mushroomhead
Savior Sorrow
Savior Sorrow (2006) vs. All Hope is Gone (2008). Personally, I am one that really appreciates AHIG – it has landmark Slipknot tracks like Psychosocial, Snuff, and Dead Memories. With that said, it is also a bit of a lopsided album, which is front-loaded for the first half and the second half showing a bit of a slowdown. In the second half - do love Snuff though – especially the recent version covered by Soen. Conversely, Savior Sorrow is MRH putting it in a new gear – losing Jmann’s crushing vocals, but pulling in Waylon Reavis who contributes both strong cleans and harsh vocals. Also, this is a big change from XIII, and I personally prefer forward progression in albums. This is a tight one - but I will give this to MRH for breaking out of their mold. | | 2 |  | Mushroomhead
Beautiful Stories For Ugly Children
Beautiful Stories for Ugly Children (2010) vs. .5: The Gray Chapter (2014). Sad days for Slipknot – losses of both Paul Gray and Joey Jordison. I recognize that this is not Slipknot at its best – as most are aware – but there are some killer tracks here (The Devin In I, Custer). BSfUC is also considered to be a low point for MRH...but I do not fully agree. Though not as good, BSfUC Seemed to be a natural progression from Savior Sorrow – and I appreciated the progression. Also, the interplay of Jeffrey Hatrix and Waylon Reavis really shine on this album. I will give this one to MRH for continuing to push their envelope. | | 3 |  | Slipknot
We Are Not Your Kind
The Righteous & The Butterfly (2014) vs. We Are Not Your Kind (2019). What can I say about WANYK that others have not. It is a return to greatness for Slipknot, although I wished they had found some way to mix the superb track “All Out Life” into the album. TR&TB also sees MRH bringing Jmann back into the mix, and keeping the 2-pronged vocal attack used in Savior Sorrow and BSfUC. Unfortunately, Waylon Reavis gets truly lost in the mix in this album. This is a good album, but a return to form (2003 XIII form to be specific) does not a landmark album make. Slipknot takes this one. | | 4 |  | Mushroomhead
A Wonderful Life
A Wonderful Life (2020) vs. The End, So Far (2022). Similar to AHIG, I really, really dig The End, So Far – it provides a great mix of bangers, as only Slipknot can do, and more experimental metal tracks. Also love the bookend tracks to enter in and release from this album. That said, I also really appreciate the huge experiments that MRH make on A Wonderful Life – with the slower, more atmospheric tracks and improved multi-vocalist attack. Jmann continues to bring his deep growl and rapped vocals to the mix, and the new vocalist, Mr. Raukhorst, contributes some great cleans. The real game changer and stand out on A Wonderful Life is Ms. Jackie (Jackie LaPonza of the bands Jackie and Unsaid Fate) – both vocally and stylistically in the videos. She could dominate the whole album, but was wisely held to 5 select tracks – as the old-school MRH fans may cry foul. As much as I love The End, So Far – and I do – I have to give this to MRH for another progressive step away from their mold. | |

01.17.23 | From Part 1 - Slipknot came in strong at 5-2. The latter half of their discography sees Slipknot fall to 1-3, with MRH taking the lead due to greater experimentation or progression during this time period. Parts 1 and 2 combined; Slipknot barely eeks out a win at 6-5 - owing most to their stellar early output. Don't count MRH out though - I'm a big fan of the continued changes made on Savior Sorrow, BSfUC, and A Wonderful Life. Exciting to see where both bands go in future years. | chemicalmarriage

01.18.23 | Love some Slipknot - and can see where some would find Jeffrey Nothing’s vocal style grating. But Really digging the FNM vibes in A Wonderful Life. Jeffrey Nothing is not on this album. |
