10.23.22 | Oh yeah it's a blast doing these, so I might add descriptions for why they're my picks. I was torn between picking The Fragile and Clarity for 1999 because both rank in my top 10, but after a long time of thinking over each album the latter eventually clicked with me more. And also because I already picked TDS for 1994 so another NIN record seemed unnecessary | combustion07
10.23.22 | Loving the cover for 7. Definitely gotta jam it | JKing92
10.23.22 | I almost picked The Fragile for 1999 as well, but I went with The Slim Shady LP because I find it to be a more consistent album overall (and my second favorite Eminem album, behind The Marshall Mathers LP, which was third place for 2000 for me -- Deftones' White Pony was runner-up to Stankonia). It also didn't quite make it because I don't quite rank it as high as other NIN albums (Pretty Hate Machine, Downward Spiral of course, Year Zero, even With Teeth, Broken too, if we count that).
I've never been afraid of having picks repeat themselves, personally. If anything, I think, even with the risk of redundancy and repetition that it poses, it proves just how much certain artists mean to me and gives away certain biases (though I understand that many try to avoid this in favor of providing more variety to their lists, something that I do try on occasion). There are instances of artists repeating where I could pretty easily swap in something else (for example, I could have relegated the Beatles to 1969 with Abbey Road -- my favorite album of theirs -- and made my 1967 pick The Velvet Underground & Nico, while 1968 could have been Pink Floyd's A Saucerful of Secrets, which is actually my favorite '60s Floyd album, etc), but I made the choice not to so I could emphasize how much certain artists and albums mean to me.
I think I just try to be as upfront with my tastes as possible, so that I can just be honest with myself and any potential readers about my tastes. | ChrimzonCanine
10.24.22 | Nothing wrong with picking the classics and a few popular records. Hell, I have more respect for those who aren’t afraid to admit they’re into those instead of just picking random obscure grindcore/indie crap and saying it’s peak musicianship because it’s the norm on this site. A little 70’s prog and 80’s hard rock is good every now and then |
