Oh Sees Binge Ranking
Thought I relied too much on sput ratings to screen what I listen to. Thought it would be interesting to binge and rank an entire artist's discography and hopefully inspire someone to check out some underrated albums. Think I'm gonna do Cocteau Twins next. |
| 1 | | Thee Oh Sees Floating Coffin
My first Oh Sees album and the only one I own on vinyl. A perfect alignment of their garage rock, psychedelic and pop influences. Potentially biased. 4.5/5 |
| 2 | | Thee Oh Sees Orc
Their best late-career album so far. More ambitious use of synthesizers and varied song structures. Vocals have tons of personality. Really like the unique production on this one as well. 4/5 |
| 3 | | Thee Oh Sees Putrifiers II
Extremely underrated within their discography. Surprises with some of the most mature songwriting we’ve seen yet. An amalgamation of every sound they’ve experimented with thus far. 4/5 |
| 4 | | Thee Oh Sees Help
A more refined “Master’s Bedroom” and the Oh Sees album with the most pop appeal. The best iteration of their psychedelic phase. 4/5 |
| 5 | | Thee Oh Sees Mutilator Defeated At Last
Really where to go if you’re craving more stuff like Floating Coffin. Not an outlier in their discography by any means, but thoroughly enjoyable. 3.5/5 |
| 6 | | Thee Oh Sees Smote Reverser
Logical progression from Orc, but slightly more bloated and inconsistent. 3.5/5 |
| 7 | | Thee Oh Sees The Master's Bedroom is Worth Spending a Night In
Their first great album and where the band started to carve out a lasting identity. Probably their psychedelic peak. 3.5/5 |
| 8 | | Thee Oh Sees Castlemania
Some batshit wild songwriting ideas here. Kind of their “Wowee Zowee” in a way. One of their most challenging albums disguised as a pop record. Gains additional favor for deviating from the formula. 3.5/5 |
| 9 | | Thee Oh Sees A Weird Exits
Beginning of the “two drummers” phase. Not likely to floor anyone familiar with the band’s sound. 3.5/5 |
| 10 | | Thee Oh Sees Carrion Crawler/The Dream
Really expected to love this one as the fan favorite. One of their most energetic and confident albums but seriously lacks diversity or dynamics. Just sort of comes and goes. 3/5 |
| 11 | | Thee Oh Sees Drop
Sandwiched between Floating Coffin and Mutilator, does not deviate from the formula in any interesting way. 3/5 |
| 12 | | Thee Oh Sees Warm Slime
Also fails to make an impression. The first instance of that “Carrion Crawler” sound. No real standouts. 2.5/5 |
| 13 | | Thee Oh Sees Face Stabber
16 minutes into Henchlock and I finally start to regret doing this. Does not do anything to stand out among recent output. Mostly tuneless jamming probably better suited for a live setting. Does not have the advantage of brevity. 2/5 |
| 14 | | Thee Oh Sees Sucks Blood
Psych-folk roots - first two albums are interchangeable in quality. Some interesting ideas here and the only time you’ll hear a theremin on an Oh Sees album. Otherwise unremarkable. 2/5 |
| 15 | | Thee Oh Sees The Cool Death of Island Raiders
^ |
| 16 | | Thee Oh Sees Dog Poison
Has little context among their other albums. At least it’s short. 1.5/5 |
| 17 | | Thee Oh Sees The 12" Synth
Not for me. The beginning of a new career phase? Who knows. 1.5/5 |
