hal1ax
12.29.17 | 4 and 5 are some of my favs, nice.
did u ever play jet force gemini? was rly good |
SteakByrnes
12.29.17 | I only came here to make sure Chrono Trigger was #1 and FF6 was #2
I see you're a man of culture as well |
cold
12.29.17 | @hal1ax I actually never got the opportunity to play that. It wasn't as easy to obtain a game when I was a kid, mostly having to wait over a month to save my allowance in order to buy a new game. Then maybe the store didn't have it (most likely). RIP Kaybee Toys, Electronics Boutique and Funcoland
@steakbyrnes well, ya came to the right place and ya goddamn right I'm cultured when it comes to old-school RPG's. I'd say my list is relatively spot on. Regardless, CHRONO TRIGGER WILL ALWAYS BE NUMBER ONE. |
zakalwe
12.29.17 | Zelda is 1.
Try saying anything different back in the day or 25yrs later and you’re a bellend. |
Spacesh1p
12.29.17 | Jet Force Gemini ruled, totally forgot about that game. |
hal1ax
12.29.17 | ya man. was one of my favs |
DinosaurJones
12.29.17 | 4 is so amazing. I like the Paper Mario games (though I've only played the original and TTYD), but at the time SMRPG was so unique... and it still is, really. |
DungeonBoy
12.29.17 | Chrono Trigger is the best RPG ever made
If we extended this list to SNES (Super Famicom) games outside of NA releases:
- Terranigma
- Seiken Densetsu 3
- Tales of Phantasia
..would all be in my top 10 |
zakalwe
12.29.17 | Tales of Phantasia rings a bell |
cold
12.29.17 | "Zelda is 1.
Try saying anything different back in the day or 25yrs later and you’re a bellend."
Nah dawg, Chrono Trigger will always beat Zelda. Hell, Final Fantasy will always beat Zelda. BUT, like I said, personal favs. |
cold
12.29.17 | @dungeonboy, I really wish I had the opportunity to play more Famicom games when I was kid, but they were very few and far between : ( |
Zig
12.29.17 | Chrono Trigger is #1, for sure.
Btw, after seeing this list, I don't understand why Sega's Phantasy Star 4 is claimed to be one the best RPGs of 16-bit generation. |
DungeonBoy
12.29.17 | "Btw, after seeing this list, I don't understand why Sega's Phantasy Star 4 is claimed to be one the best RPGs of 16-bit generation."
My best guess is it's because it's the only real RPG Sega kids had, and since we all had that loser friend with a Genesis it's the only one they had access to |
cold
12.29.17 | @ziguvan while it's not one of the best RPG's, I still really enjoyed Phantasy Star 4 and what it had to offer (being it was a Sega title). I liked 2 and 3 also, but I have a lot of fond memories of the fourth installment. Mainly, I believe it was the first RPG to give me a sense of sadness. You know, when one of the main characters, Alys, FUCKING DIES. |
cold
12.29.17 | "My best guess is it's because it's the only real RPG Sega kids had, and since we all had that loser friend with a Genesis it's the only one they had access to"
I had both, hahaha, got my Genesis in Xmas of 92' and got my SNES the following Christmas. But yo, Shining Force and it's sequel were the RPG gems of the Sega Genesis. And don't even get me started on the underappreciated RPG's and other games that came out on Sega Saturn (dare I speak it's name, hahaha) |
Kalopsia
12.29.17 | i played through Super Mario RPG so many times as a kid, might be some rose-tinted glasses but it would maybe fall somewhere in my top 10 games of all time. |
cold
12.29.17 | @kalopsia yooooo, the hype is real, no rose-colored glasses on your face. I replayed this a year or two ago, and it still holds the same fun value that it did when I first played it. It really is a fantastic RPG and holds up to the test of time. |
Kalopsia
12.29.17 | hah probably true.
i got a hold of the SNES Classic a few months back but haven't had a chance to play much on it yet. I'm totally pumped to revisit Mario RPG again |
Deathconscious
12.29.17 | Super Mario World was the first game i ever owned. |
Deathconscious
12.29.17 | @kalopsia download a Mario RPG rom and get the patch that makes it harder, it makes the game much more enjoyable. The original version is way too easy. |
cold
12.29.17 | @adolfchrist I actually had no idea about the emulator patch, thanks man. Now I'm gonna have to replay it.
And Super Mario World will always fucking own |
Sinternet
12.29.17 | 6 is 1 |
cold
12.29.17 | EarthBound is fantastic, I just didn't replay it as much as the others. Might need to do that soon... |
DungeonBoy
12.29.17 | Earthbound is one of those games that I didn't really play until later in life so I didn't have any nostalgia googles, rose-tinted/colored spectacles, memory monocles while playing it, and I found the humor and gameplay to be very satisfying in my early 20's which I was surprised about. Chrono Trigger still leaves an impact as an adult, however I found Mario RPG (a game I once adored) to be too simple and underwhelming later in life. |
cold
12.29.17 | Chrono Trigger is one of the first games I played to have multiple endings and New Game+, so it never stopped being entertaining and fun. I still play it at least once a year or every two years. |
Deathconscious
12.29.17 | Anybody play Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga? Criminally overlooked RPG. |
cold
12.29.17 | I wishhhhh, I was stuck with a Game Boy Color during the Advance and Advance SP days : ( |
Deathconscious
12.29.17 | Download a gameboy advance emulator. |
cold
12.29.17 | I think I'll do just that, last time I downloaded an emulator was yearssssss ago. What's the best GBA emulator in your opinion? |
Deathconscious
12.29.17 | the Visualboy Advance works great, very simple to use. you can also run regular GBA/GBA Color games on it. |
Atari
12.29.17 | 5 is the most nostalgic game of all time |
cold
12.29.17 | Thanks @adolf, I'll definitely check that out. Your initial comment has we wanting to play some SMW though, like you it was the first SNES game I ever played...from a hospital bed...in a half body cast, hahaha |
SteakByrnes
12.29.17 | Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga is such a fantastic game, an incredibly underrated game for sure
Chrono Trigger is the best game ever made to me |
cold
12.29.17 | I really enjoy all the love Chrono Trigger is getting. Did you guys also play Chrono Cross? |
SteakByrnes
12.29.17 | Chrono Cross is not nearly as good, it's very decent imo |
cold
12.29.17 | Yeah, it's nowhere near as good, I think it would've been a whole lot better if it was a standalone title and not a Chrono title. Cross didn't even come close to living up to the hype and expectations that Trigger had. |
DungeonBoy
12.29.17 | Chrono Cross is a fantastic game. Chrono Cross is a terrible sequel. |
Keyblade
12.29.17 | Chrono Trigger is 1 ofc. top 5 games of all time right there
gonna add 7-10 to my SNES classic |
tellah
12.29.17 | FFIV tho >:(
edit: it's in honourable mentions but still |
DungeonBoy
12.29.17 | you spoony bard |
tellah
12.29.17 | casting meteor on this thread smh |
zakalwe
12.29.17 | Anyone remember Xenon? Fucking unbelievable soundtrack and them big turbine engine cannon things on your ship.
Amiga >
|
MO
12.29.17 | chrono, ff2 and ff3 are mine |
zakalwe
12.29.17 | It was actually Xenon 2 to be more specific. |
DungeonBoy
12.29.17 | @zakalwe, never played it man but it looks fun. I'm a big fan of old school shoot 'em ups.
@MO, last time I referred to FFIV and FFVI as FF2 and FF3 some peeps on this site completely lost it |
MO
12.29.17 | ha let them squirm |
WatchItExplode
12.29.17 | Illusion of Gaia was so bomb. FF VI will always be FF III to me...and my favorite. |
Kalopsia
12.29.17 | grats on the feature |
cold
12.29.17 | @tellah I highly considered putting IV on the list, it’s still an amazing installment of the Final Fantasy series.
And thanks guys, it’s always nice to discuss those old RPG’s : ) |
Source
12.30.17 | The cover of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest always reminded me of the lion king whenever I saw it at the video store as a kid. |
cold
12.30.17 | And that game typically gets a lot of shit, but it got the North America market much more accepting towards the Japanese style JRPG. I still kinda like it lol |
Allergist
12.30.17 | Chrono Trigger was my life growing up... |
CaimanJesus
12.30.17 | 10s a great album |
SteakByrnes
12.30.17 | I know it's not a SNES game, but FF Tactics tho |
hogan900
12.30.17 | Terranigma man, other than that this is a good list even if I think the secret of mana blows cock |
foxblood
12.30.17 | earthbound and trigger are the best. chrono cross is my favorite game. snes has some great rpgs but little else, genesis is superior as a console in every way besides it's rpg selection. alien soldier, lightening force, contra hard corps is better than anything on snes. |
Asdfp277
12.30.17 | earthbound is best |
Minushuman24
12.30.17 | I've only played 6,5, and 1
I need to get on these |
cold
12.30.17 | “I know it's not a SNES game, but FF Tactics tho”
DUDE YES!
And at some point I’ll definitely pay tribute to the Genesis and it’s many classics ; ) |
cheapcrayon
12.31.17 | A Link to the Past is probably the best game ever. |
SteakByrnes
12.31.17 | It's not even the best Zelda game |
cheapcrayon
12.31.17 | Yeah you’re right Ocarina of Time is the best game ever. A Link to the Past is also the best game ever though |
SteakByrnes
12.31.17 | Still wrong |
tcat84
12.31.17 | Tried playing Secret of Mana with a friend. Found it quite frustrating, but fun for the most part.
Are any of the others 2 player? |
botb
12.31.17 | 1 is 1 and 2 is 2, well done |
cheapcrayon
12.31.17 | Would like to hear what the best Zelda game is then. I’ve played and beaten all of them. anything besides ocarina of time, a link to the past, breath of the wild, wind waker, or twilight princess being the best would certainly be an unusual answer. Majoras mask maybe. |
SteakByrnes
12.31.17 | Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are the best |
cheapcrayon
12.31.17 | Good picks. Both are in my top 5. Twilight Princess doesn’t get enough love |
SteakByrnes
12.31.17 | Yea they mirrored the entire game because most people are right-handed while Link swings a sword with his left |
Astral Abortis
01.01.18 | Breath of the Wild is the best Zelda. Twilight/Ocarina/Majora close behind. The rest range from pretty good to pretty bad. Very uneven series, but let's hope BotW is just the beginning of a promising new future for the series. If they had a Majora-style asset-reuse sequel to BotW that fixes all the game's flaws, that would be a best game of all times contender. |
cheapcrayon
01.01.18 | damn I was like 18 playing Twilight Princess. I played the original on NES when I was a kid, mostly A Link to the Past though. I’m old |
SteakByrnes
01.01.18 | I was 11 when Twilight Princess came out |
Astral Abortis
01.01.18 | I was around 13 or 14 when it came out and played it through. I mainly loved it because it was so much like Ocarina of Time, which I played a lot when I was a wee lad. |
cold
01.02.18 | "I was 11 when Twilight Princess came out"
Damn, I was 21, hahaha
I do feel like making a Zelda list at some point wouldn't hurt ; ) |
Astral Abortis
01.02.18 | Hahaha you’re old |
cold
01.02.18 | "Hahaha you’re old"
Why do you think I made an SNES list, hahaha |
Astral Abortis
01.02.18 | Idk I played SNES a lot when I was a child, didn't think of it as an old man console |
Astral Abortis
01.02.18 | The again it was my grandma's SNES...
Maybe...it IS an old person gaming machine |
cold
01.02.18 | Oh I think it is, but what would that make the NES? |
Astral Abortis
01.02.18 | The ... parents gaming console? |
cold
01.02.18 | Grandpas??? I dunno. Think of all these old games remind me how a lot of those NES/SNES/Genesis soundtracks still stand the test of time |
SteakByrnes
04.17.18 | Just here to remind everybody that 1 is 1 yes < 3 |
Casavir
04.17.18 | 1 is indeed 1. |
GmemberKills
04.17.18 | man i need to get into more snes jrpgs
chrono trigger & FF4 are the only ones i've completed |
SteakByrnes
04.17.18 | snes jrpgs are fucking stellar, get on them |
Casavir
04.17.18 | Play Secret of Mana next. |
SteakByrnes
04.17.18 | Secret of Mana just got a remaster as well |
GmemberKills
04.17.18 | the two I completed are classic, i just really need to really dive in on FF6 and Earthbound. Only played both briefly.
ps1 era is all where my nostalgic heart lies. FF7,8, & 9, Parasite Eve, Legend of Dragoon, Suikoden.
|
SteakByrnes
04.17.18 | Chrono Trigger, FF7, and FF6 are all my top three |
GmemberKills
04.17.18 | VIII is my favorite, even though VII & IX are objectivity probably better.
I just love the aesthetic in VIII, and it has some of my favorite music tracks period. Triple Triad is like the best mini-game ever too |
Keyblade
04.17.18 | s/o to the snes classic, i can play all these bitches
chrono trigger forever the goat |
Deathconscious
04.17.18 | Front Mission deserves a mention. |
cold
04.17.18 | I honestly never got the opportunity to play Front Mission, but now you've got me interested in tracking down a file for my emulator. |
Deathconscious
04.17.18 | Did you end up jamming- i mean uhh, playing Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga? |
cold
04.17.18 | I did not, I got a SNES Classic and was sucked back into the world of Final Fantasy III and Secret Of Mana, haha. |
Deathconscious
04.17.18 | Ahh, yes. 3 is one of the best. |
cold
04.17.18 | Of course, man. And I'm so glad the SNES Classic has Super Punch Out, I can spend hours and hours having a blast playing that. |
SteakByrnes
04.17.18 | Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga is my favorite GBA game, one of my favorites in general |
bloc
04.17.18 | Yeah that Mario and Luigi RPG series is freakin godly. |
