11.23.16 | Dude just remember that if absolutely everything goes to shit there's always rehab, ECT, and other options before the one. |
wristcry
11.23.16 | already been detoxed once. stayed clean for like a week, had a stumble and now i'm back blowing $50/day on a habit that shouldn't be. feel like i can't even hide it from my boss now, so it's only a matter of time until i can't afford it. |

11.23.16 | Twice is next on the list. Hop back on. Rarely does anyone make it on the first try. |

11.23.16 | better off letting them deal with someone that can make a change for the better tbh. |
Cryptkeeper
11.23.16 | Detoxing is like 20% of the effort to stay clean.
I should know, I'm in rehab

11.23.16 | What you doing for exercise / diet / sleep?
Outside of genetics (which is estimated to be about 50% of the depression battle, sad to say for those who have it) these three are the primary components of the equation. |
Cryptkeeper
11.23.16 | Therapy is the answer. Depression and addiction are both symptoms of a bigger problem you need to face. |
GhostOfSarcasticBtrd
11.23.16 | Not entirely true considering the massive role genes play. Sometimes lifestyle factors are all you can do, so why ignore them? |
wristcry
11.23.16 | "What you doing for exercise / diet / sleep?"
run every off day, go to the gym if i can be bothered, train for cricket on the off chance that i get picked to play u/21s for the uni again.
diet's pretty shit, but i get all my fruit/veg. if anything probably a bit low on sugar and a bit high on salt.
sleep is invariably just however long i stay passed out when i finish the bottle. |
wristcry
11.23.16 | "Therapy is the answer."
idk, im on my second round of ssris (first round was ineffective) and going to therapy every fortnight or so (the university psych services are horrendously underfunded), yet here i am. |

11.23.16 | i'm sorry to hear this.
also, 10 through 12 r weighty listening.
u sure know how to pick a soundtrack |
Cryptkeeper
11.23.16 | I've seen people here come for their 4th round of rehab, sometimes it takes longer, maybe the help they provide is bad, maybe you wasn't ready or fully willing to undergo that therapy.
The second, third and fourth time might still be the charm. |
wristcry
11.23.16 | i need money tho. i'm practically broke as it is, and now that i've lost my accommodation scholarship its either save or bust.
will try again, but idek, the opportunity cost is fucking high. |

11.23.16 | Few suggestions, make of them what you will:
1) Get some home equipment so that you can do body-weight exercises directly in your room. Doorway trainers, push up handles, ab carver... something. They are super cheap and the ability to see the physical object from your bed is key. Literally drop out of bed and boom it's there. Use these for reps till failure and I don't care what your mental state is this will improve it. Anytime you start feeling that kinda way just hit 'em again.
2) Take up swimming. Water is immensely helpful for a lot of people in a way that can't be achieved on dry land. There's something about it that distracts from the outside world and your thought processes are narrowed to less destructive things. Consider it, even if you don't know how to swim think about picking it up.
3) Cooking. This serves three functions: First, it's time consuming/distracting. You'll start enjoying meals significantly more and there will be a sense of progression and accomplishment. Second, your nutrition will be more monitored and better; this will inevitably improve mood. Third, it will force you out of the house to get ingredients. Make it a routine.
Again, what you get from these is up to you. |

if you didn't add that... |
GhostOfSarcasticBtrd
11.23.16 | Also, have at least one person close to you to lean on for support or that you can vent to irl. Not the therapist, btw. Someone you can see every single day. |

11.23.16 | @space - that contribution i'm pretty sure was that big list - cos he went to all the trouble to get the art sorted and write the (awesome) descriptions and provide links. essential sach-core u kno? like a guide to the real marginal stuff that doesn't really get repped on here.
i copy-pasted most of it to a word doc but the deletion suuucks |

11.23.16 | might see if i can sort things out with my family, but i can't really guarantee anything on that front, so finding a reliable someone i can ask for help without seeming like a fucking burden will be quite difficult. |

11.23.16 | ya honestly severe depression is mostly genetic. if u are predisposed to low serotonin / norepinephrine, you're kinda screwed, even with a healthy lifestyle, which is why SSRI's have been like easily one of the biggest pharmaceutical breakthroughs in terms of mental health. but that being said, making lifestyle changes (all the stuff ghost said tbh) in tandem with the drugs and therapy is going to give u the best chance at mental recovery / stability. sorry to hear about your scholarship tho my dude. i rly hope u can bounce back from this |
