10.16.23 | ex machina just over 2
Men sucked |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.16.23 | I've been avoiding Men since everyone tells me how much of a waste of time it is, but I do fucking love Garland
Honestly Ex Machina and Annihilation are close for me. Never got why Annihilation didn't get super high praise, I remember walking out of that theater being very very satisfied |
budgie
10.16.23 | do jeremy saulnier next |
SomeCallMeTim
10.16.23 | Ex machina easily |
PitchforkArms
10.16.23 | Ugh I thought Annihilation was rubbish. Ex Machina rules tho!
|
ramon.
10.16.23 | ex machina > men > annihilation
thought annihilation was a pretty heavy exposition slog, and i felt a little underwhelmed with the way the movie explored the shimmer. got a thorough setup but felt tertiary to other themes and plot lines in the end. think it has the least memorable performances of the three for me as well. visual treat in parts though. |
Sharenge
10.16.23 | are the books worth checking if you didn't care much for the film? |
hesperus
10.16.23 | i could maybe understand a couple of those points, but how the hell is Gina Rodriguez's performance not burned into your skull |
hesperus
10.16.23 | and yes, the books are quite different and definitely worth checking |
Slex
10.16.23 | Ex Machina is so so fucking good but I'm going Annihilation |
PotsyTater
10.16.23 | Uh he didn’t direct dredd so not counting that and devs was shit so
1. Annihilation
2. Men
3. Ex Machina |
PotsyTater
10.16.23 | “ are the books worth checking if you didn't care much for the film?”
Yes. At least the first one. Only read part of the second before losing it.
But the book and the movie are extremely different. All my favourite things from the book don’t happen in the movie and vice versa. Very independent yet complimentary works imo. If you like the ~concept~ of the movie you may like the book. Also it’s not called the fucking shimmer in the book because that’s stupid. |
porcupinetheater
10.16.23 | Annihilation I guess doesn’t suck as hard as the other two, but Alex Garland is not good |
CamiloG
10.16.23 | Ex Machina, brilliant movie, iconic dance scene… |
Jots
10.16.23 | imo ex machina and annihilation are pretty close but both have different issues. idk. will go with ex machina |
Trebor.
10.16.23 | Annihilation by a lot |
PotsyTater
10.16.23 | “ Ex Machina, brilliant movie, iconic dance scene…”

10.16.23 | Fuck it imma say Men, I loved that awful thing very much. |
neekafat
10.16.23 | budgie i think you're overestimating the number of people who know who that is lol |
ramon.
10.16.23 | @hesperus might be just me but she almost didn't feel like she existed in the same movie as the rest of the cast haha, kinda got the idea the movie was going for a really dour tone in terms of performances then you've got gina doing gina stuff anytime she's on screen
dynamic performance sure, just didn't feel like she fit in that much so her performance felt like it drew a lot of attention to herself in a way that detracted from the film for me. feel like her character's personality and story more generally could have been depicted a fair bit more subtly while still driving home requisite emotional resonance, and i think that kinda approach woulda been a cool thing to have gina pull off; she's 100% got the talent for it |
YakNips
10.16.23 | ex machina |
Havey
10.16.23 | i have zero interest in seeing any of these movies

10.16.23 | Only seen Annihilation from him and I hated it, although this was a while ago so my opinions would probably be different now. That bear scene though was awesome. |
Mort.
10.16.23 | Men
(also alex garland is friends with kazuo ishiguro and thats very cool imo) |
Trifolium
10.16.23 | I have only seen Ex Machina. Does that automatically make that my all-Alex Garland? (As in: fave, worst, sexiest, most boring, funniest, scariest, etc.) |
IsisScript80
10.16.23 | I haven't seen 'Annihilation', so I can't comment on that. It'd have to go some to top 'Ex Machina' which I regard as one of the two greatest sci-fi films of the last couple of dacades that I've seen (along with 'Arrival').
'Dredd' was very good for what it was (Edit: as Pots said, didn't direct... write and produced. Forgot that). 'Sunshine' I've seen once and whilst atmospheric, didn't do much for me for reasons I can't remember. 'Devs' (not a film, obvs), flirted with being great, but didn't fully land, IMO... still really dug it. And 'Men' was something like a 6.5/10.
So, barring me finding 'Annihilation' conpletely jaw-droppingly astonishing when I finally watch it, I'd definitely have to go with 'Ex Machina' at this juncture.
(BTW: Where's Hawks in this? He can legit come here and shout "MEN" from the rooftops). |
CugnoBrasso
10.16.23 | Men |
FurtherDown
10.16.23 | Sunshine. My favorite movie of all time (not the best, but I just love that thing so much.)
Well, I know it doesn't count, then I'll go for Men. Despite some shortcomings it clicked with me the most. Yeah and everybody is overreacting to it. |
CugnoBrasso
10.16.23 | Not really, I was just menposting. Ex Machina, but Annihilation is also cool. |
Egarran
10.16.23 | Ex Machina.
Definitely read Annihilation. The title will even make sense. (But as pots said, ignore the sequels.) |
denboy
10.16.23 | I don't think Garland is a good director, I love his ideas and hate his execution
I did really enjoy the dancing scene in Annihilation though, I thought it was a stunning way of depicting what interacting with an actual alien intelligence would be like, so i'll throw my vote in for that one |
denboy
10.16.23 | ex machina is a bad movie, the acting and writing (dialogue) is trash tier |

I need to stick my head in a fridge for a few minutes in order to escape the hotness of your take.
"Annihilation is one of my favorite movies so everyone voting that hasn’t seen that hmmmmmmm"
I'm perfectly fine if you don't want to count mine as valid for that very reason. I thought I'd just give my response to everything but. |

10.20.23 | I love Alex Garland, Annihilation is his best for me and basically a perfect film. But Ex Machina is a close second. Really curious what his upcoming Civil War will be like. Sunshine is amazing and underrated too, and 28 Days Later is my favorite zombie movie. Would love another Dredd, Karl Urban said he'd be game for it. |
zaruyache
10.20.23 | Maybe Annihilation over Machina by a nose. |
