10.09.23 | Haven't yet seen Beau Is Afraid but my favourite is Hereditary by a fairly small fraction. |
Vercetti
10.09.23 | I really don't get the popularity of Hereditary.
Beau is Afraid is currently my favorite. |
MeatSalad
10.09.23 | Midsommar and Hereditary feel interchangeable. Beau is Afraid was an absolute clusterfuck of a movie but I enjoyed the absurdity and the very OTT depiction of anxiety |
Gameofmetal
10.09.23 | Hereditary I guess but pretty close, haven't seen Beau yet. Robert Eggers solos tho |
Wildcardbitchesss
10.09.23 | Hereditary by far. Midsommar is good. Beau is Afraid has a lot to love, but I already felt like Aster started to crawl up his own ass with Midsommar, with Beau is Afraid he made it all the way inside and built a home for himself |
neekafat
10.09.23 | to show my biases:
midsommar>beau>>hereditary(but i haven't seen it since release, they're all good to great) |
MoM
10.09.23 | Midsommar (though it’s still a 3.2) > Hereditary (2.1) > Beau (hated. It’s got a couple neat things, but it’s tied with Joker for my least favorite Joaquin performance and everything else was just a series of chin-in-hand waiting for something to be good besides the scene transitions. Not even DXM saved that crap). |
Wildcardbitchesss
10.09.23 | and if we were allowed to rank Johnson’s I’d put it in between Midsommar and Beau. So impressive that it’s essentially a student film, ridiculously well made. |
MoM
10.09.23 | After Midsommar, I’ve felt that Aster works best with short moments and that short films would be his best work and Johnsons added to that. |
Shemson
10.09.23 | I’m really excited to watch Beau Is Afraid and gutted I missed it at the cinema because I managed to catch both Hereditary and Midsommar at the cinema just off the strength of trailers and both absolutely blew me away.
I make them both 10/10 tbh |
Trebor.
10.09.23 | The other two are a huge step down from Hereditary. Dude is not close to the same level as like Robert Eggers |
Wildcardbitchesss
10.09.23 | I haven’t seen the Northman but I think Hereditary is better than both The Witch and The Lighthouse, even if I think those two films are better than Midsommar and Beau is Afraid. So Ari > for me.
Like, I have no problem with calling Hereditary the best horror film of the 21st century. |
Ryus
10.09.23 | if we're comparing then yea its not close, the lighthouse is terrific |

porcupinetheater
10.09.23 | Midsommar
Hereditary is way better for most of the movie but the ending fucking ruins it
VVitch is better than either, although The Northman is worse than anything Aster (or almost anyone else) has ever done |

10.09.23 | what about the lighthouse tho |

10.10.23 | midsommar |

10.10.23 | The Lighthouse kicks ass. I love both The Witch and The Lighthouse, it’s just that I think Hereditary is pretty much perfect. I love every second of that movie. |

10.10.23 | The first 20 mins or so of Beau Is Afraid > Midsommar > Hereditary >>>>>>>>> The rest of Beau Is Afraid >>>>>>>>>> that godawful short film with the father-son thing |

Hereditary
The lighthouse
The witch
In that order if combining
I kinda enjoyed the northman but yeah agreed,
Only Heriditary would make a top 3 of both tho |

10.10.23 | ok ok chill eggers will be next
they're not even that similar, eggers is a much stronger filmmaker |

10.10.23 | “Hereditary is ok but the ending is so stupid”
I can get with this. I think Hereditary is like an 8.5-9/10 but it’d be 10/10 if it weren’t another demon possession story. I was expecting more of a general ghost story, I guess.
Hereditary is peak Aster though, doubtlessly.

10.10.23 | Hereditary by a million miles. midsommar is terrible and beau was bad, i'm afraid. |

10.10.23 | the strange thing about the johnsons is also a wild ride. |

10.10.23 | Kk neeka, I understand. Midsommar (director's cut) |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.10.23 | Hereditary is by far my favorite and it's not even close.
Midsommar had fantastic visuals, but I was SO hyped for that movie and tbh it didn't come together as a whole for me at all.
Beau had some interesting parts and some nonesense. |
Wildcardbitchesss
10.10.23 | I do need to give that directors cut a shot I guess.
But I will say that my first thoughts after watching Midsommar weren’t “wow, I wish it was 20 minutes longer!” so I think mileage will vary. |
MiloRuggles
10.10.23 | The stuff that was cut is story critical at points, makes the ending far more effective. Won't change fundamental gripes obviously but it's a vast improvement methinks |

10.10.23 | Beau easily. The movie feels like a panic attack fucked a nightmare and caught it all on camera |
artiswar
10.10.23 | Midsommar is honestly pretty stupid but Florence Peugh's performance is insane. Hereditary is great. Still need to watch Beau. I don't have a favorite but he's a great art-house film-maker and I'm glad he exists |

10.10.23 | team midsommar |
porcupinetheater
10.10.23 | Tbh didn't love what the Midsommar director's cut added
Bits at the beginning where Christian's covering for wanting to break up by inviting Dani on the trip are a great add, but that really long scene with the play and then the argument just feel like such an unnecessary spelling out of shit that's already pretty clear in the theatrical cut |
artiswar
10.10.23 | was I the only one just cringing out of my seat when the camera just pans across those pictures that basically explain the period blood ritual? Like wow, how did that make the cut. |
TheSonomaDude
10.10.23 | Beau Is Afraid is still my top pick for 2023
Midsommar was the 5th best film of 2019, and the 2nd best horror film of that decade.
Hereditary was mid. All style, no substance. Beautifully shot with great individual moments but the story was not well thought out.
So Beau for me. |

10.11.23 | Haha no prob neek. We must overcome our non-existent tiff and celebrate, for our tastes in film have had one of their relatively uncommon collisions. Huzzah for Idyllic Psychedelic Horror! |

DavidYowi
10.11.23 | Love all three of his movies, they feel at war between wanting to have a strong emotional core and wanting to fuck with audiences, which I fuck with. I often go between Hereditary and Midsommar as my fav, but I’ll give the point to Midsommar for the imagery. It’s odd, most people seem to prefer Hereditary, Midsommar seems to have a more lasting impact visually.

gryndstone
10.11.23 | Hereditary all the way.
Midsommar was a little too oddly paced for me personally, but it's still good. Beau is Afraid is a conflicted giant sprawling mess that I want to rewatch again, but is still probably no more than a 3/5 |
fogza
10.11.23 | i've only seen beau but it was good |
Wildcardbitchesss
10.11.23 | Midsommar is hands down one of the most visually stunning movies I’ve ever seen. I’m really glad I decided to see it in theaters.

midsommar, even if it's an unfair playing field |

10.13.23 | ya I still say to this day that Midsommar is the most accurate portrayal I’ve seen of psychedelics in film. Home girl was tripping balls.
Idk if I’d take shrooms and watch it tho lol, the movie is beautiful but any death scenes would immediately ruin it for me. I can’t imagine watching the beginning while tripping |
PotsyTater
10.13.23 | 1. Beau
2. Midsommar
3. Hereditary |
PotsyTater
10.13.23 | If I were to combine the two directors for whatever lol reason it would be
1. VVitch
2. Beau
3. Midsommar
4. Lighthouse
5. Hereditary
6. Northman
Lighthouse I think is a lot better than Midsommar on an artistic level but also it was boring as shit so I had to take that into consideration |
Mort.

i did a big dose of shrooms a few months ago and it was so intense and emotional i never wanted to take them again
and all i did was listen to chocolate town by ween over and over again |
Wildcardbitchesss
10.14.23 | lol yep sounds about right. first time I did acid I thought it wasnt working so we took another tab. I ended up thinking I was in danger til I realized I was tripping and calmed tf down. Still that was an intense night
try em again but start smaller. it’s the same rule as edibles, you can always eat more, can’t eat less. A small dose is alot more pleasant for me too tbh, my mind is way too erratic for a ton at once |
MoM
10.14.23 | “ i did a big dose of shrooms a few months ago and it was so intense and emotional i never wanted to take them again”
This was my first few times. Kept taking full eighths at once and that was wayyy too much for where i wanted to be and with my specific body. |
MeatSalad
10.14.23 | 100% agreed about midsommar and mushrooms. I had never tried shrooms when I first saw the movie, thinking "damn this is a pretty tame tripping scene" but then on a rewatch after trying shrooms a few times I was kinda blown away by that first mushroom sequence
Also same here mort, I was completely overwhelmed the last couple times I took them. It was still a positive experience in the long run though, helped me connect with some shit I didn't realize I needed to connect to which is what I hoped to gain from shrooms in the first place. Probably only gonna do smaller doses in the future if I try them again |
Mort.
10.14.23 | yeah my first time i did a smallish dose and it was great fun except for 5 minuted where i got really in my own head
did the same dose a few more times and thought it was great.
then did a double dose and oooh boy
(nobody ever tells you how much you fucking sweat either jesus christ)
but yeah i enjoyed it even tho it was intense and emotional
would like to do it more in the future but the guy i gets them off sells them in these cacao bars and honestly i fucking hate eating loads of cacao in one go its so fatty and disgusting |
ramon.
10.15.23 | midsommar's visuals from pretty much start to finish were such a ride on acid. the opening mural alone was pretty insane to experience, let alone the brightness and stillness of a solid chunk of the cinematography, paired with the prevalence of nature and mythological/religious symbolism (not even to mention the general visual fuckery present in a few scenes). the cliff sequence was absurdly intense on this rewatch. may be an ill-advised viewing without a trip sitter but we really enjoyed the experience, intense as it was |
CamiloG
10.15.23 | They are all excellent for different reasons. A very incredible director. But I think my vote is for Hereditary. |
