Neek's 2018 Q2: Films

I know I see too many movies, blame my major and MoviePass.
1Beyonce
B'Day

Blockers - 3.5/5
Another winner in the adult comedy genre, this one isn't as uproariously funny as it is clever and respectful in its approach to the important material. Sure it's hilarious at times, but what really keeps you sticking around is the heart. And boy is there a lot of it.
2Gang of Four
Entertainment!

Isle of Dogs - 3.5/5
For all its useless subplots and characters, and lack of a, well, point, Isle of Dogs succeeds at being fun and stylish entertainment. Just don't think about it too much and you'll be fine.
3Coldplay
A Rush of Blood to the Head

Avengers: Infinity War - 4.5/5
A gargantuan monstrosity of pop culture that succeeds by being just dark and different enough to set itself far from the pack, even if the focus wavers in unfortunate directions and some subplots seem to be unfinished. It's hard to judge this completely without seeing the sequel.
4Bon Jovi
Slippery When Wet

Rampage - 3/5
Despite a frustrating and tonally inept opening sequence, Rampage works way better than it should one it settles into good-hearted and just plain likable smashing entertainment.
5Avenged Sevenfold
The Stage

Deadpool 2 - 4.5/5
While is lacks the inherent shock-value of the original's surprise, it ups the ante in almost every other way, providing a more engaging story, actual heart, stellar visuals, and even more humor.
6Primus
The Desaturating Seven

Solo - 3.5/5
Solo's charm comes as naturally and simply as any Star Wars film should, but that was never where the problem would lie. The problem is, through all of it's slick visuals and fun characters, why is this story being told, and why should we care?
7Royal Blood
How Did We Get So Dark?

Hereditary - 3.5/5
Hereditary is at its best when it examines the horror that everyday life can bring to an average family, which makes it all the more disappointing when it eschews its arresting emotional weight for something weirder but far less engrossing.
8Batushka
Litourgiya

First Reformed - 4.5/5
A harrowing and blistering take on the ties between religion and politics, First Reformed is, above all, a film with balls almost as big as its heart.
9Frank Ocean
Nostalgia, Ultra.

Incredibles 2 - 3.5/5
A messy, over-calculated sequel to a timeless classic of our childhood, Incredibles tries to do so many things that it can't succeed at many. But at its core it's still the fun and exciting family action fest that we all know and love, even when it sadly fails at trying to be more.
10Lady Gaga
Joanne

Ocean's 8 - 3.5/5
Ocean's 8 has more than enough style and excellent writing to keep you from realizing how thin and tension free it all is until long after it's over.
11Ghost (SWE)
Prequelle

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - 3.5/5
Fallen Kingdom eschews the bloated action of its predecessor for increasingly scaled down and visual appealing tension, creating a surprisingly effective late entry in the franchise thanks to the ability to look towards the future rather than simply recreating the past.
12M83
Hurry Up, We're Dreaming

Will You Be My Neighbor - 4.5/5
While not overly bright and cheerful, what makes the film works so well is its strangely sobering look at optimism and what that means for both the world and the man that sought to fix it the best way he knew how.
