Neek's 1st Listen: Typhoon's "Offerings"

Been a while since I done this, might be doing this for my album review radio show I've been doing lately...

Wake:
Alright that’s pretty moody I’ll admit, really digging this atmospheric into. Okay this might be a little early to say, but I don’t think I’ve really heard anything like this before. It’s got a thick atmosphere and seems somewhat based in folk music. Don’t hate me, but the vibe kinda reminds me of Science Fiction in terms of the hazy but pronounced production. I know nothing about this band aside from the genre tags, but I think I really like this. OH FUCK that was nice, idek what those are, are those strings? The backing guitar is mixing perfectly with it though. Oh and those vocals in the background are so damn nice. Are those horns?? Jesus fuck, I think we have a winner here guys.

Rorschach:
Alright let’s see if we can keep this quality going guys, looks like we have another promising song coming up. Absolutely loving that guitar riff. It’s like these guys can create an atmosphere out of thing air. Electronic influence too now? What is this Bon Iver? Regardless, I love how unsettling that refrain is, and the voices in the background are eerie too. Fuckkkkk those strings too. Do these songs ever keep still? I feel like everything is constantly changing right when I get used to it, which is exactly what I like in music, actually. Kompys was right, this is totally up my alley. How have I never heard of these guys before? It’s like every genre and style I dig fused into one cohesive mish-mash of sound. I can’t get enough of this, thank god I’m only two songs in.

Empiricist:
Oh we got a long one here, let’s do this. I see we’re a fan of these edgy intros are we, Typhoon? Give it to me. Alright, pretty purposeful sounding riff coming in. Not as blown away by this song as much as the others yet, but I’m assuming it’s more of a slow-burn so I’ll give it some time. The guitar sound on this album is so interesting, it’s creating a different vibe every second. These strings are so nice. Is that foreign-language refrain they keep saying from The Dark Knight Rises or some shit? It was in the first song too. I love how mellow everything’s just got. I’m sure t’ll probably explode or something soon, but I love how gentle it is right now. Man I’m only halfway through and loving this so much. It’s not as immediate as the last two but it’s more cohesive and involving. Jesus this music is just all over the place, but it’s so so nice. I can’t wait to come back to this later and dig into the lyrics, I’m sure they’re great too. Is that a guitar screeching again

(cont'd)
Is that a guitar screeching against the strings? I love how alien it sounds. Ugh these vocals hurt my soul right now. This is just so beautiful. When will I run into a song I’m not in love with already?

Algernon:
Alright, some stripped back guitar stuff now. Are these guys considered folk or rock? Right now they’re just kinda doing both, again similar to how Science Fiction sounded to me, except a bit more musically diverse and not quite as emotional. Again not so blown away by this, but it’s really nice sounding and relaxing. I love how the piano meshes and contrasts with the guitar.

Usual:
Wasted no time getting into the lyrics this time, huh? Another very acoustic driven track this time, but something seems to be a little more sinister this time around. Oooooooh they really like their strings and horns don’t they? The instrumental thing sounds a lot like something Coldplay would do on AROBTTH or something, which everyone should know is definitely not a problem for me. Again, not blown off my feet by this one but it sounds so good and it’s everything I like in mellower music so I can’t complain. And there’s the crash in! Very percussive and propulsive, but not necessarily “loud” per say. Again a bit Coldplay sounding, but in a good way and a bit more aggressive on the guitar for sure. Man this is just insane. Wtf is going on?? Sounds like a Mexican birthday party rn. I wonder what themes they were going for with this release, it seems very expansive and far-reaching culturally and musically. More crowd sounds, this

…fades right into the next one I guess. This one’s opening isn’t really standing out as much as the first few for me so far, but I’m sure something will happen down the line that’ll make it stand on its own. For right now it’s pleasant and calming, which is definitely something I could use right now. Something about this song is just making me more emotional than the previous ones, fuck me. I’m loving these little lo-fi segments. Oooooooh this rising tide of music is so nice, I wonder where it’s going. Climax, or dissipates?

Remember:
Goes into the next one again haha, this one was a bit less effective than the last transition. How far along am I in this album now? Seven songs, jesus that was fast. This one traded the acoustic for a bit heavier earlier on this time, I was about to say this doesn’t have as much of a unique quality to it as much as the other ones but those strings came pouring in. I wish I had the words to describe the sound of this or how it affects me, but I don’t. OH that’s funky, wasn’t expecting that riff to come from this track, that was almost QotSA-esque. I’m just naming my favorite bands at this point lol, this has pieces of all of them in a way that’s engaging rather than uninspired. This might be my least favorite so far, but it’s still really cool and it’s definitely more unique than I thought going into it. Ahhhh, not sure if I’m convinced by those female vocals, they don’t really seem to fit the music too well there. Eh, either way it makes the song more distinctive.

Some acoustic picking and mellow vocals, definitely stream-of-conciosuness stuff going. Oh and it’s over.

Coverings:
Oh female vocals, okay. Is there a woman in this band? Be cool if she got a lead vocal opportunity, she sounds better on here than on the other one for sure. The spacey acoustic background helps with the airy qualities, almost like she’s taking us on a flight through the clouds. This is really really cool sounding. It’s so damn pretty, but there’s still a palpable tension lingering under the surface. And I’m really liking the vocals too, it makes the song stand out better from the pack than if it were the guy, and I think we voice just fits this material better. Ugh that comedown was so nice. Fuck it.

Chiaroscuro:
I swear this was the name of a song in something else I just listened to. Oh right, there’s a dude singer his voice kinda startled me lol. So are we content with simpler acoustic stuff now? That’s cool, I’m alright with that. I’m beginning to think nothing will top the first three songs, but any album is lucky to have three songs as good as that so. The lyrics are a bit easier to listen to this time since the vocals are a bit more clear compared to the music. Am I the only one getting a Coldplay vibe from this? Am I crazy? This is really nice though.

Darker:
Oh that was it? This has definitely got some interesting instrumental stuff going on here, but I’m worried that the songs are gonna start becoming a bit too samey for my tastes. Regardless, this sound is great. The acoustic-led but still electric-based sound allows for some great sonic adventurousness and the guitar work is so detailed it lends a huge expressiveness to the music. I’m digging the differences between the choruses and verses here a lot, the switches between the two constantly feel surprising but strangely right. Yeah, okay I really like this one it’s settled.

Loved that lead in to this song. Aw yeah, give me something you depressing guitar. Gimme da feels. No vocals, give me something different, I’ve already heard this I feel like. Wooooooo that western-sounding thing is awesome I’ll give it that, I just want the vocals to differentiate this song from the others a bit. I really like his voice but compared to the rest of the soundscape on this album it’s a little samey. Oh and the girl again! Let’s do something cool, yeah. Oh that was it.

Ariadne:
Did you just hear what I said about your vocals dude? I mean, I guess you didn’t, but seriously switch it up a bit. Okay, yeah those guitars are great I’ll give you that, but stop distracting me from the matters at hand man. There’s so much going on in this album I feel like I’ve never be able to really take it all in. Where the hell did these guys come from, have they always been around? This album is ridiculously good. Alright we’re doing some interesting guitar stuff. Everything seems to be building somewhere, let’s take it there guys let’s do this. Oh and it cut out. Idk if that was cool or disappointing. This song is really good regardless. Oh and there’s that Dark Knight thing again. Now THOSE vocals sound unique, just do more of that. And some spoken word poetry aight.

Sleep:
Alright home stretch here we go. Some uniquely slight sounding acoustic guitars, not much reverb or massive production going on yet. Hopefully this is one of those slowburn huge things but really any cool way to close thing album out will be nice. Even the vocals here sound pretty unique, and those strings mmmmmmmm I can’t get enough strings in about anything though so I’m a little biased. Oooooh some twinkly guitar shit, I like it. Let’s do this yeah. Loving this track so far. Okay we’re taking a break now. Some very quiet vocals are going on. Guitar’s coming back up gently, man this is moody as shit. Something vaguely country-esque going on with that guitar there. Yes bring that static up boyyyyyy.

(cont'd)But seriously where are we going with this, is that it? Are we doing the 5 minutes of silence and ambience to round out the album thing? There’s something happening, are those footsteps? Woah okay, that was pretty cool. What is this reminding me of? Idk, I give up but that interlude was nice, though I’m glad we’re out of it. Digging that guitar/piano sound. The vocals sound pretty folky here even though none of the rest of the song does. Some weird female backing vocals, they seem to just be jamming with noises at this point, though it does serves as a nicely upbeat finish to the album. As closers go, this is a damn great one.
