Albums from Q1 2019 You May Have Missed

Some of my favorites from the first quarter of this year that I haven't seen much buzz around, or that I feel were overlooked. Maybe check them out if they sound like something you'd dig!
1Juan Wauters
La Onda de Juan Pablo

2 ratings, latin indie folk. His first all-Spanish album, this is some really cozy stuff. It just feels good to listen to.
Rec'd Tracks: Guapa, Blues Chilango
2Eerie Wanda
Pet Town

0 ratings, indie folk. Some cutesy, spooky indie folk. She's got a lovely voice, and this thing gives off some mild 50s/60s vibes
Rec'd Tracks: Moon, Pet Town, Sleepy Eyes
3Sir Babygirl
Crush On Me

8 ratings, electropop/synth pop. A really short, very fun dance-y pop album reflecting on the experience of queer second adolescence. Overdramatic at times, but so is teenagerhood.
Rec'd Tracks: Haunted House, Heels
4Cochemea
All My Relations

4 ratings, spiritual jazz. Sounds like a happy rain forest!
5International Teachers of Pop
International Teachers of Pop

1 rating, synthpop. A fun debut from the UK synthpop band. Some 80s vibes, some disco vibes.
Rec'd Tracks: Age of the Train, The Ballad of Remedy Nilsson
6Helado Negro
This Is How You Smile

15 ratings, indietronica. Some lush, dual-lingual (english and spanish!) synth folk.
Rec'd Tracks: Please Won't Please, Pais Nublado, Sabana de Luz
7Nuvolascura
Nuvolascura

17 ratings, screamo. Fantastic debut from the screamo band. One of the best I've heard in the genre for a while!
Rec'd: Just check out the whole thing it's only like 20 minutes

Pretty Buff

23 ratings, power pop. The hardcore band go full power pop. KingOzma's review does a great job of summing up what I love about this album. It's some of the most fun I've had listening to music all year!
Rec'd Tracks: Big Ass Love, On My Way, Band My Drum
9Matmos
Plastic Anniversary

31 ratings, glitch. Weird dance music made entirely using plastic instruments, or samples of plastic objects. Worth checking out for the novelty of the concept alone, but it's a damn good album in its own right.
Rec'd Tracks: Plastic Anniversary, Collapse of the Fourth Kingdom
10Billy Woods, Kenny Segal
Hiding Places

19 ratings, abstract hip hop. Honestly, this is barely a rap album. Billy Woods is basically doing a spoken-word performance that happens to be over Kenny Segal's atmospheric beats (you may recognize the name - he produced much of milo's So the Flies Don't Come). Lyrically, it's a bleak, affecting reflection on how society leaves the lower economic classes behind. One of my favorites of the year so far.
Rec'd Tracks: Bigfakelaugh, Speak Gently, A Day In A Week In A Year
11Quelle Chris
Guns

22 ratings, jazz rap/abstract hip hop. The title is on the nose: this is an album about guns, gun control, and how the deadly weapons anyone can own in America affect daily life. The production is a bit of a head-scratcher, considering how low in the mix the vocals are sometimes, but a worthwhile listen regardless. Also touches on racism, xenophobia, and the sociopolitical consequences of patriotism.
Rec'd Tracks: It's the Law, Box of Wheaties, Wyrm

Friends

1 rating, math rock. The second EP from one of the most promising new math rock duos. Fresh off the heels of last year's debut, this is sort of more of the same, but when the same is this good who am I to complain? 5 cuts of instrumental, tapping-heavy, fun math rock!
Rec'd Tracks: Tangerine, Hammerhead Shark
