05.18.26 | Big Trouble in Little China is overrated af and im tired of pretending it isnt |
BAT
05.18.26 | I'm surprised btilc is beloved as it is critically cause it's one of those movies my family kept in our rotation as like a guilty pleasure, it's not bad but I'm admittedly more of a horror guy and generally like carpenter at his most simplistic....the thing being the exception that's probably my defacto favorite carpenter. Prince of darkness I'd put up a few notches, it's uneven and weird but in a good way. The fog I actually think is the most over hyped buuut, it's still like a Halloween season comfort movie. Village of the damned I haven't seen since I was like 10 I remember it being okay but just don't hear about it much.
Escape from LA feels like a practical joke on the audience, it's like one of those 2000s meta parody remakes a la starskey&hutch buuuuuut: it's just not very funny lol. That's probably my least favorite. His anthology stuff is fun but kinda hit/miss, think it was body bags with the gas station attendant...the mark hamill transplant parts waaaay better than carpenters. His masters of horror episodes are also interesting, cigarette burns in particular is pretty brutal/dark for carpenter buuut it's got some shoddy editing and normon reedus trying to sound American just makes it a little silly. Haven't seen the pro-life one since it first aired and I thought it was way too over the top/poorly written, with modern political hindsight it may've aged well but I remember it being straight up ridiculous. Haven't seen the ward just didn't hear much about it, JCs a top 3 director for me tho |
CaliggyJack
05.18.26 | Ward is pretty good, a bit flawed tho |
RVAHC13
05.18.26 | 13 is 1 |
Sevengill
05.18.26 | 3 & 4 win for me. Halloween never grabbed me as much as it probably should've. Christine was a childhood fave but I haven't felt compelled to watch it in decades. Vampires was lame, ya. |
Larkinhill
05.18.26 | Prince of Darkness higher, In the Mouth of Madness and Vampires both slightly higher, Village of the damned much lower.
Top 3 are definitely Halloween, The Thing and The Fog, in that order. Also don’t forget Escape from LA which, while cheesy and with horribly outdated effects, is still a fun ride. |
Insurrection
05.18.26 | the thing > halloween > everything else |
CaliggyJack
05.19.26 | Yall are absolutely sleeping on Assault on Precinct 13. That movie slaps |
BAT
05.19.26 | oh it's in my top 5, there's some repeat shots i'd take out during the defense scenes but aside from that it's a banger. contender for best siege movie of all time next to night of the living dead |
Hyperion1001
05.19.26 | the thing is kind of the inarguable #1. its basically a perfect film.
i would rank the rest wildly different too. carpenter is my favorite director of all time tho. |
Deathrot
05.19.26 | Alien 1979> the thing |
Hyperion1001
05.19.26 | not even remotely close. |
combustion07
05.19.26 | The Thing, Assault, In the Mouth, Halloween, Big Trouble, They Live, Escape, Prince, The Fog, Christine, Vampires, Village, The Ward, Ghosts
Honestly Prince of Darkness should be hire for me but idk putting it there |
Deathrot
05.19.26 | Not even remotely close to a decent take agreed lol. |
Sevengill
05.19.26 | Deathrot with that 1982 movie critic energy |
Insurrection
05.19.26 | the thing and alien are prob my 2 favorite horror movies but the thing is tops. just flawless from beginning to end |
Sevengill
05.19.26 | outside of The Thing -- Jaws and Terminator are my classic faves, The Descent and Cabin the Woods are my newer faves, Fright Night and Zombi 2 (Fulci) are my oddball faves. |
BAT
05.19.26 | The things a top 3 all time personal favorite, I also love alien tho. Saw both when I was like 5 and they fucked me up for life lol, I give the thing an edge just because of how bonkers it gets. Both are like perfect movies to me tho wouldn't change a thing |
combustion07
05.19.26 | The Descent is a good pick. That one held up so good just watched it again a few months back |
budgie
05.19.26 | is vampires really that low i remember loving it but its been a long time |
budgie
05.19.26 | "Alien 1979> the thing
definitely, easily
the thing is so overrated |
budgie
05.19.26 | @seven fright night isnt an oddpick pick its a fuckin classic !!!!! |
Hyperion1001
05.19.26 | stfu budgie |
CaliggyJack
05.19.26 | I wasnt a fan of Vampires personally |
Sevengill
05.19.26 | THANK U BUDG it's definitely got the best looking vampires, non-Ashley Greene category |
smaugman
05.19.26 | The thing is not overrated, it’s such a great movie. No scene is redundant, it always keeps you on edge |
Aerisavion
05.19.26 | The Thing is probably my favourite horror movie ever, I love Big Trouble Little China
& Halloween / Escape From New York are classics.
Ghosts of Mars, though. That really was a movie. |
LouBreed
05.19.26 | Manwhile, there's new music incoming from John
"Sacred Bones Records just announced Cathedral by John Carpenter" |
Zac124
05.19.26 | Big Trouble In Little China at 13 is mad.
Wished I like Dark Star more though. It reminds me a lot of Red Dwarf (I mean the inspiration is blatant), but just lacked anything that interesting. Ending was pretty decent though. |
Hyperion1001
05.19.26 | my ranking would be
1. The thing
2. Halloween
3. They Live
4. In the Mouth of Madness
5. Prince of Darkness
6. Big Trouble in Little China
7. Escape from New York
8. Christine
9. The Fog
10. Assault on Precinct 13
11. Starman
12. Dark Star
13. Village of the Damned
14. Vampires
15. The Ward
16. Memoirs of an Invisible Man
17. Ghosts of Mars
I considers everything 1-10 to be legitimate classics with only the bottom 3 being genuinely bad films. |
Zac124
05.19.26 | Here's my ranking even though I've seen 8
1. The Thing
2. Big Trouble In Little China
3. Prince of Darkness
4. Halloween
5. They Live
6. The Fog
7. Dark Star
8. Assault on Precinct 13 |
CaliggyJack
05.19.26 | You both have Assault on Precinct 13 WAY too low. |
Larkinhill
05.20.26 | Alien 1979> the thing (2)
Without a doubt.
Also, it’s been so long since I watched but I remember just thinking Assault was “pretty good”. Prob been 25 years since I watched it tho so I don’t remember a damn thing about it! Time for a rewatch.
Remember that pointless remake with Ethan Hawke and Laurence Fishburne? lol. I had forgotten it existed too. |
combustion07
05.20.26 | I love Assault I can understand why people have it low though tbh. I just love movies with trapped in a certain location vibe (Alien, Day of the Dead, The Thing, etc..) Even though I have Prince low it’s probably the one I go back to most. Love the vibe of it and those weird dream sequences are so damn ominous |
CaliggyJack
05.20.26 | The remake def is not as good as the OG, but I didn't hate it. |
Shogun
05.21.26 | The Thing is number 1. That film is perfect |
