Favorite Violin Concertos

some of my favorites
1Johannes Brahms
Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77

arguably the best violin concerto ever made - emotional but sophisticated
2Ludwig van Beethoven
Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61

he's good at pretty much everything violin concertos too
3Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35

if you like theatrical and dramatic this is for you it is truly glorious - not subtle at all or particularly nuanced but it is heart-felt and sometimes that's the best way to be
4Jean Sibelius
Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47

repeat listens are needed to truly appreciate this concerto especially the second movement which is super refined and elegant - the most important qualities in slow movements imo
5Bela Bartok
Violin Concerto Nos. 1 and 2

the second concerto is one of the greatest things and distances itself from nineteenth century concertos
6Max Bruch
Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op. 26

very solid but not quite as dynamic or charming as some of the others on this list
7Felix Mendelssohn
Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64

engaging throughout
8Dmitri Shostakovich
Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor

improves with repeated listens
9Niccolo Paganini
Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Major, Op. 9

good but no. 2 is the best of his and extremely underappreciated
10Johann Sebastian Bach
Concerto for 2 Violins in D minor, BWV 1043

just great all-around. the first movement is really lively contrasting nicely with the sublime second movement
