Top 5 Pink Floyd Songs

Just my personal opinion, leave your list in comments if you have one. Self-explanatory. *CORRECTION For number 3, Barrett was not involved with Ummagumma. However, my opinion contrasting the two songs as eerie remains the same
6Pink Floyd
Pigs (Three Different Ones)

Honorable Mention
Roger Waters singles out the three different pigs who control society.
5Wish You Were Here

David Gilmour and Roger Waters collaborated for this classic. It's said to be about Waters' feeling of alienation from other people, but in my opinion it addresses the absence of Syd Barrett directly. When asked what it was like for him to play guitar in an interview with The Rolling Stone, he said "It's always been too slow for me. Playing. The pace of things. I'm a fast sprinter. The trouble was, after playing in the group for a few months, I couldn't reach that point." And a verse from the song goes,
"Did you exchange,
a walk on part in the war,
For a lead role.
in a cage?"
Syd had abandoned playing in the group. Whether it was for his own personal need or selfishness (he had always been an introvert) I think Wish You Were Here describes that feeling perfectly.
4Comfortably Numb

The literal meaning of this song interprets Waters, or 'Pink' in this case being ill before an event. He is possibly in a drug-induced state or a "bad trip." He is then injected with something to get him going through the show.
"Okay,
Just a little pin-prick"
However, I find another meaning to the lyrics and music. This song is from "The Wall," Pink Floyds last studio album with Gilmour, Waters, Mason, and Wright. At that point in the band's life (which will be alive forever,) I think the band collaborated to create the feeling that the music they had loved to create has made them numb to other aspects of their lives. In the chorus, Gilmour sings,
"There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying"
I interpreted that into my own perspective, the listener speaking to the band. Try the same, and maybe you'll see where I'm coming from.
3Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Pts. 1-5

Another track on the album, Wish You Were Here, that is generally written about Syd Barrett. I think it's interesting that even after departing the band Barrett remained an inspiration for them. In my opinion, this song is unique because it pays tribute, but also shows a little sadness and resentment towards Barrett (in the music and how it sounds, not found in the lyrics.) This song exhibits all of the member's talents. The introduction gives it a truly psychedelic feel. It feels like something Barrett would have composed. Not that they sound the same, but Careful With That Axe Eugene is an example of Barrett's work that provides the same eerie feeling I get while listening. Then 3:53.. so badass. Actually the entire song is badass. Barrett was "exposed in the light" like in the third verse waters sings.
2Money

One of two songs on my Top 5 from Dark Side of The Moon, Money peaked at 13 on the charts(US) in 1973. The song was first recorded in Waters' makeshift recording studio in his garden shed. The song is one facet of the diamond that is the albums versatility. It has a unique time signature which is incredibly hard to adjust to as a musician (which is 7/4-4/4 for all the musicians out there). My dad plays the saxophone and told me this. The saxophone in this song is just as prominent as the Gilmour's solo. I love the punk feel to this song. Bringing up Gilmour's solo, whenever I listen to it I feel like I'm inclined to move to the sound of it. Also, the meaning behind the lyrics is incredible. Even though the song itself is nearly 45 years old, it still describes our society's materialistic needs. It's message is, 'As long as I get what I want and deserve, I am fine.'
1Time

Time is my number one song by Pink Floyd. That means to me, it is the most iconic and meaningful. Time to me has no underlying meaning beneath the lyrics of the song. It is so straightforward in it's meaning, and I think that's the best way to convey it's message. We are told that time passes by and you often realize when it's too late.
"The idea in Time is a similar exhortation to Breathe. To be here now, this is it. Make the most of it."
-Roger Waters
"Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way"
If you put yourself in that position then you realize that you can relate. Or at least I could. He mentions the dullness of time, how we spend time wasting time.
