12.08.15 My Top 10 Songs According to Itunes

My Top 10 Songs According to Itunes

According to itunes, these are my top 10 songs judged by the amount of listens each have with only one song per band included. Although some of these I would consider to be among my all time favourites, since I usually listen to full albums, most songs should have a fairly consistent play count with the rest. These songs were either very clearly the best songs on the album, are biased because they are near the start, or just somehow made it to the top through some kind of black magic.
1The Flaming Lips
The Soft Bulletin

Race for the Prize: One of my favourite openers to an album, this song kicks off with the symphonic pitch shifted synth, backed by the raw and untamed drums (unlike the shitty polished remix version) with the lush atmosphere that is felt on the rest of the album. Some great lyrics about scientists saving the world at the cost of their lives too.
2Arctic Monkeys
Whatever People Say I Am, That's What...

A Certain Romance: clearly the arctic monkeys best song (although I think Humbug is their best album as a whole). The jangley guitars make for a really pretty song with some interesting lyrics from Alex that both critique and humanize the UK's Chav culture.
3Gorillaz
Demon Days

Feel Good Inc.: I remember when this song first came out, I was in a phase where I believed all music made after the 70s was bad, and that all rap was crap. I really wanted to hate this song, but I couldn't because it's just that great. Really cool music video too. The best song on the album though is Every Planet We Reach is Dead.
4Love
Forever Changes

Alone Again Or: Another great start to an album, although I am surprised this is so high as usually I would listen through is entire album if I started it. This song has some of my favourite accoustic guitar playing, and the latin vibe is really cool.
5Elliott Smith
Either/Or

Ballad of Big Nothing: A prime example of why Elliott Smith is one of the best pop song writers this side of The Beatles. This song is perfectly composed following this trajectory that climaxes in his declaration that everything is a "Big Nothing." Probably my favourite song on this list so far.
6Joni Mitchell
Blue

All I want: Another example of some of my favourite acoustic guitar playing in a song. The harsh rhythmic strumming of Joni is contrasted by James Taylor's soft finger style chording. And as always, Joni's voice is amazing.
7Curtis Mayfield
Super Fly

Pusherman: Funk does not get better than this. Probably the grooviest song that also makes me sad. Curtis' falsetto in the chorus always gives me chills.
8Radiohead
OK Computer

Paranoid Android: Finally we reach a song that would probably make my actual top 10 song list. It's amazing how a single song can contain my two favourite guitar solos, but such is the genius of Jonny Greenwood.
9Television
Marquee Moon

Marquee Moon: Speaking of favourite guitar solos, here is a close contender. The interplay between Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine takes this punk prog masterpiece to a different level. Some how they managed to create post-punk just as punk was actually taking off.
10MGMT
Congratulations

Siberian Breaks: One of the most magical sounding songs from a criminally underrated album. Its a shame many people only know MGMT for their singles (the brilliant Kids and Electric Feel, and the not so great Time to Pretend). This song, clocking in at over 12 minutes plays out in a strange linear structure with song fragments disappearing as fast as they show up. Yet this, and the fact that nearly every one of these song fragments are some of the best music MGMT has produced, are what make the song so enduring.
