07.03.24 | Darling Phero, thanks for asking. June was relatively busy, but I only have two things in July.
Today I vacuumed a lot and I don't like that. Esp when it's hot, in the end I was down to only wearing shorts and headphones.
A summer chore I like is doing the dishes using cold water. |

DocSportello
07.03.24 | been watching this show alt for norge, every season finds a new group of emotionally fragile “Norwegian” Americans traveling abroad to compete in hygge survivor for a chance to meet their distant relatives. challenges are usually very chill, memory games, history quizzes, digging for coins in a bucket of mud, oil-pumping relay. but then sometimes there’s just casual violence against animals and always that one american who sings to her chicken in tears or spontaneously declares vegetarianism and is refused the lusekoft the rest receive for eating the lutefisk. Tom Cato shows up to coach these poor souls for a black metal competition. some of the most exhilarating, hilarious television I’ve seen in some time |
Egarran
07.03.24 | I have a religious dislike against reality shows, but yeah that does sound pretty good.

07.04.24 | >didn't know when it was happening etc. Can't say I blame them...
You can say that and you should. |
Demon of the Fall
07.04.24 | I’m guessing you’re not familiar with the state of politics here
also, like I said she’s a professional athlete who has the right to be “distracted” right now (it’s Emma Raducanu btw, thought you’d perhaps know… was just putting in perspective. You’d think the timing might give her a free pass). |
bighubbabuddha
07.04.24 | I think it's important for young sport stars to be politically engaged. Emma has a significant platform and is a role model for lots of tennis players and fans. Her blasé attitude is disappointing, especially as the country is at a crossroads and there are lots of people struggling. |
Demon of the Fall
07.04.24 | Nah, I don’t think it should be expected of her tbh. Fair enough if she wants to, but it really isn’t her responsibility. Of course she could’ve just made shit up, but that’s disingenuous. If anything it’s a proper true reflection of the apathy a lot of young people feel and in her case, it’s understandable. I think people disregard what it takes to be a top sports professional
either way people should take these matters into their own hands / educate their children etc. and not rely on celebrities to be role models. It’s cool if they actively want to, but there certainly shouldn’t be a public outcry if they don’t |
Egarran
07.04.24 | Fair. But I'll still blame them for not inciting revolution. |
bighubbabuddha
07.04.24 | I don't think Emma should be shamed by news outlets, I'm with you there. I don't think she actually has been. However, a great way to solve apathy in politics is by encouraging engagement and education. I wouldn't underestimate the influence these sport stars have. Emma has 3m followers on insta and could have a powerful ripple effect on political awareness. |
Storm In A Teacup
07.04.24 | She also said "at the end of my life at 70 years old" lol |

07.05.24 | I'll be (un)lucky to make it all the way to 70 |

07.05.24 | Emma gets a disproportionate amount of press and is unfortunately part of British media cycle of being built up then torn down. I just skip any articles about her as they always have some weird angle to them |

07.08.24 | fogza tell us about the writing retreat |
fogza
07.08.24 | it was in a place called the wye valley, which is beautiful btw. I was one of only three guys, with about 12 ladies who wore lots of tie dye and /or flowing linen outfits. there was much meditation and sharing of thoughts on pillows in a circle. I've never considered myself attractive but back then I wasn't chubby and old like I am now, and I got some really strong eye contact and some really pointed remarks from some of the ladies which made me slightly uncomfortable lmao |
Egarran
07.08.24 | Pherluv I have two small ponds but they are filled with all kinds of life. Surely you remember my riveting tale of the salamander.
It seems the dragonfly nymphs had been down there for years before coming up for sex.
Speaking of, it seems to be your destiny to travel to Wales and meet Trif. |
Egarran
07.08.24 | fogza you beast! |
Demon of the Fall
07.08.24 | from the relatively little of Wales I have seen, it is usually rather pretty. Enjoy Trif! Phero go to Wales and say hi! Killing two birds with one stone to speak (sniped by the goat)
most of this sounds exactly like I'd expect a writing retreat to be... well maybe except the remarks, lol
|
Trifolium
07.08.24 | Phero and me in Wales. Wouldn't that be something!!! 😍💖💖💖💖💖 I've hear from some family members that Wales is among their most beautiful countries on the globe, so that's promising too.
That writing retreat sounds lovely and also weird foggy. Good description. I'll be sure to avoid the tie-dyed. |

07.08.24 | AP Literature test reuslts came back. Not exactly a thriller of an outcome but I got 2 4/5 scores, which accounts for half the 4/5 scores this year (no 5/5s) in my school as a whole. I tested 32 students and got 2 4s and the rest of the school tested 106 students and got 2 4s, so I guess I did okay. Individual students had gotten 4s on previous rounds of AP Lit testing at my school but never two...
15 1s (which was also part of the outcome) pisses me off though. Standard-issue for this school but what the fuck, at least get a 2 |

I teach English to the entire senior class of 75 students and Film to 15 additional students every day.
I brought up scores across three (November 2023, March 2024, June 2024) network-generated Benchmark assessments, including multiple choice (an increase of 8.8% Nov-March and 6.8% March-Jun), free response (20.8%, 7.2%), and pass rate (21.4%, 21.1%) between 42 English IV students.
As a first-year AP English Literature teacher, I prepared a classroom of 32 students to analyze poetry and prose at a high level and to become deeply conversant with the multiple-choice and free-response sections of the AP test, resulting in the highest-ever pass rate (percentage of scores of 3/5 or higher) and highest number of scores 4/5 or above in the history of the AP Literature course at [school].
I also serve as an advisor to 20 senior-year students.

07.09.24 | Hello! No that thread is high literature filled with layers of meaning.
Trif I finished The Howling Miller! Thanks for that. It's a good tale of how all humans are mad, but some kinds are considered the normal kind. Like being a soldier or a banker. Better not imitate animals too intensely though.

of course, it depends how strong you make it, because contrary to semi-popular belief, adding extra milk to 'weaken' doesn't magically lessen your intake, lol... yes surprisingly some people do think that (just makes it taste less bitter. i.e. crappier) |
budgie

budgie
07.22.24 | ouuu ive never had to interface with ounces like that
but i know 500 mL = beer and 750 mL = wine and i can use that visualization so powerfully like a superman |
robertsona
07.22.24 | I think the alcohol world trends your direction: wine bottles are certainly always 750ml, not 25.whatever ounces. And yet beer is always ounces in the US. a pint is 16 ounces |
budgie
07.22.24 | ok yeah it gets a bit shifty with the beer, in france a demi (half) is 250, short for demi pint, a full pint is 500 ml, handily, the anglo countries pussyfoot around round numbers so a pint, or pound of water, or 16 ounces, is like 470 mL |

Egarran

Egarran
07.23.24 | Sorry for much text but this fascinating tale is related to measuring units and I know budgie will approve:
"The US standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That's an exceedingly odd number. Why was that gauge used?
Well, because that's the way they built them in England, and English engineers designed the first US railroads. Why did the English build them like that?
Because the first rail lines were built by the same people who built the wagon tramways, and that's the gauge they used. So, why did 'they' use that gauge then?
Because the people who built the tramways used the same jigs and tools that they had used for building wagons, which used that same wheel spacing. Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing?
Well, if they tried to use any other spacing, the wagon wheels would break more often on some of the old, long distance roads in England. You see, that's the spacing of the wheel ruts. So who built those old rutted roads?
Imperial Rome built the first long distance roads in Europe (including England) for their legions. Those roads have been used ever since. And what about the ruts in the roads?
Roman war chariots formed the initial ruts, which everyone else had to match or run the risk of destroying their wagon wheels. Since the chariots were made for Imperial Rome, they were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing. Therefore, the United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches is derived from the original specifications for an Imperial Roman war chariot. Bureaucracies live forever.
So the next time you are handed a specification/procedure/process and wonder 'What horse's ass came up with this?', you may be exactly right. Imperial Roman army chariots were made just wide enough to accommodate the rear ends of two war horses. (Two horses' asses.)
|
Egarran
07.23.24 | Now, the twist to the story:
When you see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, there are two big booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank. These are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made by Thiokol at their factory in Utah. The engineers who designed the SRBs would have preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped by train from the factory to the launch site. The railroad line from the factory happens to run through a tunnel in the mountains, and the SRBs had to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad track, as you now know, is about as wide as two horses' behinds.
So, a major Space Shuttle design feature, of what is arguably the world's most advanced transportation system, was determined over two thousand years ago by the width of a horse's ass. And you thought being a horse's ass wasn't important? Ancient horse's asses control almost everything." |
budgie
07.23.24 | that is very cool! the only point of confusion i have is, i was under the impression the romans didn't use war chariots, which were majorly out of fashion during the periods of republican expansion |
budgie
07.23.24 | (also that long distance roads existed centuries before IMPERIAL rome but that's a small error huh) |
budgie
07.23.24 | (also the length of wheel separation was almost certainly not standardized to accommodate horse butts which dont walk between the wheels but to bear a certain load before failure) |

07.23.24 | Oh! That'sa wonderful story Eggy. I like it more than the book I'm currently reading (Three Summers, Liberaki). |

07.23.24 | wrong? me?
the via appia was completed nearly 3 centuries before the imperial period and being 550km probably satisfies "long distance road" !@ |

I guess horse asses weren't quite as impactful in this case.
Oh bad books are bad Trif. I am reading Remote Control by Nnedi Okorafor and it starts pretty cool with this little African girl finding an alien artifact and turning into a glowing harbinger of death, but then she finds religion ARGH and all my allergies flared up. |
Trifolium
07.24.24 | Oh no. That sucks 😒
I hope mine picks up again, and it might just do that, so I'm continuing wth good hope. |

Going to North Wales today. Mountains! |
Egarran
07.24.24 | Happy trails, look out for dragons. And good luck with the book - I finished mine and immediately went to goodreads to read other people's disappointment with it. Very comforting.
Haven't read a really good one since Alamut. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, I used to depend on library serendipity but it has failed me lately. |

07.24.24 | Seeing other people voice your ideas on Goodreads is very satisfying indeed.
I spoke with some dragons today. They're all lovely here. Also the mountains are so pretty here in Eryri oh my!

I had minor surgery today, got two birthmarks removed. So I'm drinking beer to forget the pain. |

07.26.24 | Ha, thankfully not.
My body is a playground for scalpels. I also had my larynx* cut off some years ago. And also stuff happened *down there*.

Haha, thanks for always being there to correct me. Apparently it's called the uvula (drøbel). Removing the larynx seems somewhat more dramatic. |

07.27.24 | Coffined thoughts around me, in mummycases, embalmed in spice of words. Thoth, god of libraries, a birdgod, moonycrowned. And I heard the voice of that Egyptian highpriest. In painted chambers loaded with tilebooks. They are still. Once quick in the brains of men. Still: but an itch of death is in them, to tell me in my ear a maudlin tale, urge me to wreak their will. |

07.27.24 | "Would we even have girlfriends if they had social skills?"
too true
I have a very hard time imagining my gf being single for any amount of time if it wasn't for her severe deficit in the social skills department |

Pangea
07.28.24 | But my weekend is otherwise good. Yesterday had a barbeque party with my colleagues and friday i did the prerelease event of Bloomburrow. Lost all games, but had a lot of fun and made a pretty cool golgari squirrel/food deck |
Pangea
07.28.24 | How is your weekends caco friends? |
Egarran
07.28.24 | Sounds sweet, except the part about city life without headphones. My bluetooth connection has started stuttering and I'm not sure why but it's highly annoying. I should get a cable.
Bloomburrow seems tailor-made for you.
Now I am off to mother to get drunk. |
Pangea
07.28.24 | Yeah bloomburrow is so cute! Love the set and the art is so good as w3ll
Good news, my last 10% of headphone battery has survived a long time. It's not going to work for the last bit, but i should survive that

07.29.24 | It was indeed Trif. I imagine you have a body like that.
They often had a shot of a swimmer taking off his t-shirt while an official in the background was doing their best to look neutral. But we all knew what dirty thoughts they were having. |

Trundle
07.30.24 | I always really enjoy watching volleyball in the Olympics, beach or otherwise, men's and women's, I don't understand why it's not more popular because it can get super intense during a long rally.
Meanwhile American football rakes in close to 13 billion annually, even though there's only on average 13 minutes of game action per game, and the players get like a 3 minute break after about 15 seconds of effort. |
Pangea
07.30.24 | Agreed Trundle, but i also play volleybal so not so unbiased. It's my favourite sport to watch regardless, there's always action
I made a decklist of my prerelease deck for my fellow magic nerds: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/5zICx7bmCECnId582f8TtA

07.30.24 | I didnt't have many options unfortunately budgie. It was a sealed format, so my fate was tied to the booster packs i got. I did have a green fight spell, which i maybe should have included. I also regret not putting the green mana dork creature in i got, which would have made my mana base a bit more consistent |

07.31.24 | That's true Cugno, but the other things they'd say... Oh my!!! 'Hiya Trif, I fuck tomato paste!', 'Hi sweet Triffy, I really like to put my thing in exhaust pipes!', 'Hi cutie petootie, I love to stick socks up there!'. It is a relentless stream of interesting fetishes.
Pan I hope that day comes soon it is very very sweet and lovely, that idea. |
