innovation/originality (the year of release matters);
self-containedness: if the music doesn't have any value without an outside explanation from the artist, then usually it simply doesn't have any value if you ask me;
classiness: cheesy/banal motifs are unwelcome unless there's a clear meaning to them;
honesty: of course most of the time it's impossible to say whether music is sincere but if it clearly is/isn't then it gains/loses in my eyes.
What I don't care for:
melodies;
players' technical skills, how hard it is to play the songs etc.;
most of the time, lyrics - although that depends.
Also I'm mainly interested in the so-called "rock music" (recently trying to get into jazz as well), but feel free to recommend me anything interesting. |
