Morty's 2023 fav listens

(not things that came out this year, just stuff i heard and really really liked)
1The Field
From Here We Go Sublime

Sublime indeed, this genre has got to be my new obsession because it is so chill and lush and rewarding xxx
2Cop Shoot Cop
Consumer Revolt

this goes clang wank wooop shooooowip SKRONK and thats what makes it great
3Cherubs
Short of Popular

i like making up my own lyrics to Orange Julius

i love how incredibly loud and blown out this sounds at time, indecipherably big and fuzzed up
4Prefab Sprout
Protest Songs

'A Life of Surprises' is up there in terms of pure beautiful bops
5Don Caballero
What Burns Never Returns

Math Rock that is intricate and fun and quiet and strange, sometimes hits the same vibes as that Cop Shoot Cop record because it makes silly sounds sound big and intense
6Shudder To Think
Pony Express Record

This is in the running as my favourite album discovered this year. The vocal theatrics really make it POP and its got some killer choruses. Good mix of alt rock, post-punk and post-hardcore tropes.

But where it really excels is in its quiet spindly moments (stark and spooky)
7Girls Against Boys
Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby

I like how they go 'uh huh' and 'oh yeah' and 'baby!' like the most hard rockin leather jacket sunglass daddies that ever existed
8Jan Jelinek
Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records

This like 6 is one of my favs discovered this year and is in the running for being bumped up to a 5 one day.

the way it crackles and pops like a vinyl record juxtaposes with the stereotypically 'clean' sound of ambient techno/micro house and makes it feel so much more alive.l
9The Future Sound of London
Lifeforms
10Henryk Gorecki
Symphony No. 3, Op. 36
11Chat Pile
God's Country
12Sade
Love Deluxe
13The Blue Nile
Hats
14Machine Girl
Neon White OST 1 - The Wicked Heart
15Steely Dan
Aja

Peg is one of the greatest songs of all time
16Mark Hollis
Mark Hollis
17Kate Bush
Hounds of Love

you Never UNDERSTOOD MEEEEEEEEE

(you never really tried)
18Aimee Mann
I'm With Stupid

this is a very funny album with some fantastic lyrics. this is a very uplifting album with some fantastic lyrics. this is a very coffee shop album with some fantastic lyrics. this is a figuring things out in your twenties but doing better album with some fantastic lyrics.
19Ween
Quebec

chocolate town maybe one of my favourite songs of all time
20Christoph De Babalon
If You're Into It, I'm Out Of It

album art goes hard as does the music first track is like 14 mins of dark ambience and then the rest of the album is a breakbeat dream
21Thinking Fellers Union Local 282
Bob Dinners and Larry Noodles Present...

This cream will make you sing!
This powder's gonna fill you full of living
This car will fill your heart with joy and laughter
This shampoo's gonna make you feel like screaming

Take it from me
I'll give you what you need to be strong
I'll satisfy your body and your heart and make it easy to live
I'll make you belong

This beer will make you live
This soap is gonna sparkle up your marriage
This soda pop will fill your mind with comical quips
This burger's gonna make you fill your panties!

Give it to me
I do it all, I do it all for you
I'll dazzle all your friends when you take me for a walk
Then I'll eat you out of house and home and shit on everything you own
22Chavez
Gone Glimmering

gone glimmering, brb
23Jawbox
Jawbox

uhhhhh post-hardcore in this vein can be very boring if it strays too close to its roots but i like this. its incredibly catchy, fun and sardonic and hits those bittersweet moments that 'For your own special sweetheart' excelled at
24The Life and Times
Suburban Hymns

Shiner vocalist (good). Autumn post-rock atmo vibes (good). Melancholy (good)
25Chamber (USA)
A Love to Kill For

hmm I dont enjoy much modern metalcore but this sorta scatterbrained thwumping riff skronk digi-clusterfuck is up my street. band is still a few steps away from true core greatness however.
26Kowloon Walled City
Container Ships

This is a very tense record that is quite masterfully paced, a slow burning sludge skronker that has some real grit and crunch. The bass work is phenomenal and if i can put on my metal reviewing hat its a bone crushing earth shattering ripper that riffs ahrd m/////////
27Secret Guest
Traumprinz B2B DJ Metatron Live at Planet Uterus

dunno what to say about this other than i could fall asleep to it and that wouldnt be bad

(johnny knows)
