My Top 10 Dir En Grey Tracks
I tried to limit this to one track per album. Which was quite hard, but the songs on this list are a great introduction to the band if you’re unfamiliar. |
1 | | Dir En Grey Uroboros (Remastered & Expanded)
Vinushka.
This is an extremely varied and lengthy song which perfectly encapsulates the band’s spirit and different styles into one progressive masterpiece. |
2 | | Dir En Grey The Insulated World
Ranunculus.
While i believe The Insulated World is the band’s weakest effort, and in a lot of ways i personally don’t even really like the album... Ranunculus is pretty much tied with Vinushka for me. Stylistically it’s a softer track, but the emotional delivery of the vocals and the piano driven instrumental makes this one of the band’s most impressive pieces. It never fails to be moving. |
3 | | Dir En Grey MACABRE
MACABRE.
One of the band’s longest tracks, breaking the 10 minute mark. MACABRE is a dark and detailed track with some of the most unsettling and beautiful lyrics Kyo has ever sang. This thing is so expressive and visual with its perfectly placed ambient sections and storytelling. |
4 | | Dir En Grey Vulgar
OBSCURE.
This is a classic track from VULGAR. There’s not much to say about other than it being absolutely infectious and a great headbanger. This is some of the best alternative metal ever recorded. |
5 | | Dir En Grey Arche
RINKAKU.
This song perfectly summarizes Arche. It’s beautiful and monolithic in its scope. |
6 | | Dir En Grey Kisou
Bottom Of The Death Valley.
A fan favorite from Kisou, sporting some alt-rock clean guitars and a fantastic, memorable hook. |
7 | | Dir En Grey Dum Spiro Spero
Ruten No Tou.
Probably the best cut off of DSS. Kyo goes all in on his clean vocals here and it’s damn impressive. |
8 | | Dir En Grey Withering to Death
THE FINAL.
Another fan favorite. Not particularly experimental, but a mastery of the alt-metal genre that clearly influenced it. |
9 | | Dir En Grey GAUZE
Cage.
I feel kind of bad putting this so low on the list because their older material deserves a bit more love in my opinion. It’s often overlooked by the wild genre-bending of later releases, but songs like Cage capture that same creative spirit and energy. The songwriting here is perfect and so much fun to listen to. |
10 | | Dir En Grey The Marrow of a Bone
THE PLEDGE.
I was absolutely obsessed with this song for a bit. Very reminiscent of something TOOL would do, only with a bit more charm and character. This song is great. |
